TRANSCRIPT
Go for a bike ride, run or hike on Michigan's multi-use trails, stretching more than 2,100 miles across the state. This directory features trails over 3.5 miles, though there are many more across the state with less mileage. Trails in the Lower Peninsula are mostly surfaced in asphalt, or crushed stone (granite/limestone). Trails in the Upper Peninsula include some unimproved rail-trails (dirt/grass/gravel/ballast) as well as linear mountain bike trails (dirt) through forests and parks. State parks are included as additional places to bike and hike, and many offer camping accommodations. This map may be downloaded from www.michigantrails.org/trails.
ICONS KEY Paved Trail Crushed Stone Unimproved Road Portions Boardwalk Horses Snowmobiles ORV* Indicates companion notes regarding the trail, which may be found here: http://bit.ly/traildirectorynotes.
About The multi-use trails indicated on this map are accessible for walking, running and bicycling at a minimum. Unimproved trails are often rough and unsupported in remote areas. Check provided website links and inquire locally for additional information before heading out on the trails. Trail icons indicate the type of trail; paved, crushed stone, unimproved, road sections, boardwalks. In addition, icons for horses, snowmobiles and/or ORVs indicate they are permitted on the trail and you may encounter any or all while using the trail.
The Michigan Multi-Use Trail Directory & Map is produced by Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance biennially with support from Michigan Department of Transportation and advertisers. Send updates to: Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance, PO Box 27187, Lansing MI 48909 or email: [email protected].

The hiking route incorporates a large portion of the existing North Country National Scenic Trail. It traverses the west side of the Lower Peninsula and borders Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula.
The bicycle route utilizes existing multi-use trails and follows US-2, a designated national bicycling route in the Upper Peninsula.
Two routes, one great trail.

Jump on the longest designated state trail in the nation as you hike or bike your way between Belle Isle Park in Detroit and Ironwood in the Upper Peninsula. Explore pristine forests, pass cool rivers and visit charming towns, and find out why Michigan is known as “The Trails State.”
JOIN THE TRAILS MOVEMENTMission: Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance (MTGA), an affiliate of Michigan Fitness Foundation, is the statewide voice for nonmotorized trail users, helping people build, connect and promote trails for a healthier and more prosperous Michigan.
What We Do: When communities consider whether or not to acquire and develop a trail, many questions and concerns arise, such as how to get started on a trail project, what will be entailed in trail operations and maintenance, and how much will it cost. MTGA is the go to organization to answer these questions and troubleshoot issues as they arise.
Why We Need You: We are here to ensure Michigan remains the #1 Trail State in the nation. Visit our website, www.michigantrails.org to learn about the work we do, how we can assist your community and how you can help ensure the future of Michigan’s trails by becoming a member, making a donation or joining us in one of our many fundraising trail events throughout the year.
Our Events: The Michigander Bicycle Tour is our signature event and is endorsed by the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness. This 2, 6 or 8-Day classic bicycle vacation showcases the magnificent trails every July. In the fall, we host the Trail Towns Tour for a day of riding interconnected trail networks in select regions around the state.
Join Us: To ensure trails are available across the state for current and future generations, join us. As a member, you will receive our quarterly newsletter and exciting updates on trail initiatives and openings.
