Miss Syaharna Mr. S. Sairin

Mrs. C.P. Woodcroft-Lee, B.A. Hons (A.S.) (A.N.U.), M.A. (A.N.U.)

The Department maintained its principal concerns in teaching and research, while continuing to experiment with various options and emphases in the organisation and content of its teaching programs.

In accord with the recommendations of the Faculty review, the department is reconsidering the rationale behind the structuring of its courses, and is looking for ways of developing particular areas of ability among its members in collaboration with other departments and faculties.

e 3. COURSES OFFERED

The courses offered are Bahasa Indonesia & Malay (I - IV Honours), Literary Javanese (A & B), Arabic (I - III), Thai (I - III) and Religious Studies (A & B). Separate reports are submitted in respect of Arabic, Thai and Religious Studies.

4. NEW DEVELOPMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEPARTMENT

The major in Arabic and the sub-major in Religious Studies maintained themselves well; the Arabic major in particular having an important influence on the topics chosen for honours sub-theses, for masters qualifying dissertations, and for higher degree theses. It has justified itself by giving a distinctive character to the work of the department.

5. ENROLMENTS

Details of enrolments and examination results are tabulated at the end of this report.

Apart from minor fluctuations, the department is maintaining itself well. It is disappointing that this year there is only one student qualified to enter B.I.M.IV. This, however, is more than compensated by the increase in number of graduate students. It is to be hoped that the stability in undergraduate enrolments, and a development of its post-graduate work that has characterised the past two years is a trend that will continue.

6. RESEARCH IN THE DEPARTMENT

Research in the department falls into three main areas: the literature and culture of the Muslim period - mostly focussed on Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula and Java; the literature and culture of the pre-Islamic period - mostly focussed on Java and Bali; and the preparation of teaching materials. Thus the publications of Professor Johns to modern and traditional Malay literature with special reference to the Islamic component; those of Dr. Soebardi to the Islamisation of Java; those of Dr. Soewito Santoso and Dr. Supomo are devoted principally to Balinese and Old Javanese and those of Mrs. Johns to the field of language pedagogy and the preparation of teaching materials.

The present research projects of staff members in more detail are as fa 11 ows:

Professor Johns continued his research on Qur'anic exegesis in the Malay world and the study of Arabic sources relevant to ~he Islamization of the region.

Dr. Soebardi worked on the Islamic education system in West Java, and collected material for research on Islam during the Japanese occupation and the Darul Islam revolt.

Mrs. Johns brought close to completion the second volume of her book Bahasa Indonesia Langkah Baru: A New Approach, designed for second year students. This has been accepted by the ANU Press. She is currently revising the first volume (Book I) . which is due to go into a fourth edition in 1980.

Mrs. J. Lingard commenced work on a translation project on Modern Indonesian Literature.
