Drawing on the classic valve amp designs of the past, Hayden adds just the features a modern guitarist needs like valveswitching, pick-up matching and the greater reliability that comes through refined circuit design, and leaves out thesuperfluous gimmicks that often stand in the way of great tone. And through the careful combination of custom-woundtransformers, defence-standard components and elegant signal topology, Hayden delivers a performance experience inwhich the player feels unusually ‘connected’ to the sound, and the volume control on the guitar is all that’s needed tomove from clean through to crunch and overdriven sounds.

Hayden amps are hand-wired in England by specialists with years ofexperience in defence-standard work. Uncompromising specificationsinclude non-ferrous stainless steel chassis construction, hand-machinedgold turret tags, ceramic valve bases, engraved front panels andmarine quality birch ply cabinets. Yet despite a decidedly boutiqueapproach, Hayden amps are priced within range of the workingguitarist.

So the question isn’t do you need a Hayden amp, it’s which Haydenamp do you need?

PETITE 2As simple as a guitar amp can get. On the tour bus or in thehotel room, plug into the Petite 2 and you’re hard-wired to thevintage guitar sound that lit the fuse of rock & roll.

The Petite 2 does it like it was in the pioneering days of amplifier design– no circuit board, not even turret tags, just the finest components, handwired, point-to-point. A single ECC83 valve in the preamp stage and a6V6 in the output stage serve up the sound of the era when the blueswent electric, moving out of the cotton fields and into the juke joints.Driven hard and wound up all the way, the Petite 2 punches well aboveits weight, rewarding the guitarist with a harmonically rich and full-bodied performance.

The Petite 2 takes a similarly uncomplicated approach to controls withjust volume and tone knobs mounted on its rear facing panel, along with athree-position gain switch – standard, crunch and overdrive. The Petite 2delivers its 2-Watt output via a Celestion G10 Greenback 10" speaker.

PETITE 5The Petite 5 is a 5-Watt single channel valve combo thatsounds glorious with both single coil and humbucker-equipped guitars. The low power output delivers the richsound of a cranked vintage amp at sensible volume levels,making the Petite 5 perfect for studio recording.

Inspired by the designs of the ’60s, the Petite 5 effortlessly pumps outthe classic rock guitar sounds heard on so many memorable recordsfrom that decade. A dual switchable power stage invites the guitarist tochoose between an EL84 valve for a gritty, British flavour or a 6V6 for aglassier, more direct, American tone, while the footswitchable boostintroduces an extra valve gain stage, pushing the sound further into araunchy, ’70s overdrive.

The Petite 5’s beauty is more than skin deep. Components are mountedon gold turret tags which are hand-wired to create a pure and elegantcircuit layout. The full character of the amplifier is realised by a 10"Celestion G10 Greenback – a speaker renowned for its weighty low end,creamy mid-range and top-end clarity.

COTTON CLUB7/15 & 15/30Drawing inspiration from the groundbreaking British guitarmusic of the ’60s, the Cotton Club 7/15 and 15/30 combosbuild on the available amp technology of the day to maketheir signature sounds more accessible in a variety ofrecording and live situations. Both amplifiers have the facilityto switch between Single-Ended, and Push-Pull modes,empowering their EL84-driven output stages to make a fullcontribution to the sound and response of the amplifier atmanageable volume levels.

Using a footswitch, players are able to switch between a cleanchannel with simple treble, bass and volume controls, and a highergain channel with presence, treble and bass controls, plus a gaincontrol ranging from light to medium crunch. The addition of a booston channel 2 moves the sound into a more modern era but, overall,the gain structures of both combos are kept purposely low, enablingthe guitarist to add pedals for a saturated lead tone withoutcompromising the dynamic response of the output stage. Channel 2also features a master volume control for balancing the levels of leadand rhythm settings.

The voice control is provided to match the pickups to the amplifier andhas the effect of ‘thickening’ a single coil pickup which is too thin, or‘thinning’ a humbucker which is too thick.

Plug in, start playing and the strong core tone of the 7/15 and 15/30combos immediately makes its presence felt. Clean sounds exhibit a rich,woody chime while channel 2 pushes into a smooth and dynamicallyresponsive overdrive, yielding a satisfying crunch.

Whether to choose a Cotton Club 7/15 or a 15/30 combo dependsentirely on the size of venue you’re playing. The 7/15 kicks out amaximum of 15-Watts via its single 12" Celestion G12M Greenbackspeaker and can be cranked up full in the studio when switched into 7-Watt mode. Meanwhile the 15/30 combines a maximum 30-Watt outputwith a 2 x 12" Celestion G12M Greenback speaker configuration toachieve the sound pressure levels necessary to compete with a drummerin a club gig.

SPEAKEASYLike every Hayden, the Speakeasy puts tone first. Howeverthis exquisite 50-Watt valve amp also delivers a degree ofversatility that equips it well for the modern stage or studio.

The Speakeasy is configured in the classic British style – two channelswith two separate signal paths ahead of a shared tone shaping stageproviding control over presence, bass, middle and treble. Channel 1features a valve driven spring reverb and a gain range that movesseamlessly from clean into a light crunch. Considerably more gain isavailable from channel 2 which ranges from medium crunch to fulloverdrive, stopping short of full saturation.

Footswitching between the channels also switches between two mastervolume controls, allowing guitarists to balance the volume levels of cleanand overdriven sounds. Footswitch control is also provided for the reverband an external effects loop which is bypassed entirely when switchedout for maximum signal integrity.

The Speakeasy’s output stage combines over-specified, custom woundtransformers with pairs of both EL34 and 6L6 valves. A switch on thefront panel is used to select the EL34’s for the warm, fat, crunchysounds typical of British valve amps, or the 6L6s for a more transatlantictone, while a second switch can be used to select all four valvessimultaneously for maximum power and headroom.

Like other Hayden amps, the Speakeasy provides guitarists with thefacility to pre-filter the input stage to match the guitar. Vintage single-coils can be ‘beefed up’ or over-aggressive humbuckers tamed asnecessary.

The Speakeasy is available as both a1 x 12" combo and a head, with arange of 2 x 12" and 4 x 12" (see nextpage) cabinets available. After carefulanalysis of all the available speakers,both the combo and cabinets areloaded with Eminence Governor RedCoat drivers, and all cabinets can beswitched for 4 Ohms or 16 Ohmsimpedance in mono, or 2 x 8 Ohmsin stereo.

On stage or in the studio, the Speakeasy rewards the experiencedguitarist by responding readily to every subtle nuance of the performance.

CLASSIC LEAD 80The Classic Lead 80 is Hayden’s hard rock amp. Free ofsuperfluous gimmicks, it gets you straight to the sound with aperformance reminiscent of ’70s British rock moving on tomore aggressive, modern tones.

Rated at 80-Watts, the Classic Lead strikes the perfect balance betweenthe characteristics of a 100-Watt design – particularly the low frequencyresponse – and the advantages of a 50-Watt amp, most notably theability to drive it harder at gigging volume levels.

Channels 1 and 2 vary only in their gain structures, 1 being medium tohigh gain covering subtle warmth to a huger, 3D crunch, and 2 takingthings further into full, saturated, sustain without a hint of fizz. Presence,bass, middle and treble controls are provided for tone shaping but theClassic Lead won’t make you work hard to get a great sound. It’s allthere, straight out the box. Presence isn’t something you need to dialin on the Classic Lead 80 – it’s already going to be right up there inyour face.

The Classic Lead 80 isn’t just about tone. It’s also about response. Unlikeother valve amp designs, the Classic Lead 80 doesn’t rely on negativefeedback in the circuit design to deliver a ‘pleasing’ sound at theexpense of dynamic response. Using custom-wound output transformers,the Classic Lead plays with you rather than against you, tracking yourplaying extremely quickly and making you feel connected to the sound.

The Classic Lead 80 is available as a2 x 12" combo or a head, with flat andangled 4 x 12" cabinets available – allloaded with Eminence Governor RedCoat speakers. Cabinets are switchablefor 4 Ohms or 16 Ohms impedance inmono, or 2 x 8 Ohms in stereo.

Unlike most Class A amps, the Peacemakers have 2 channels – one forthe vintage, boutique amp sound, and a second that takes the classicClass A tone and turns it into a modern, high gain and very usable guitarsound with plenty of dynamics. Although vintage in character, all theHayden Peacemakers feature built-in reverb and digital chorus, a channel2 Boost facility, an effects loop and switchable dual master volumes tocreate amplifiers of outstanding versatility. A 4-way footswitch is includedas standard.

The Hayden Peacemaker range includes a 40-Watt 1 x 12" combo, a60-Watt 2 x 12" combo, and a 60-Watt head which can be used inconjunction with any Hayden cabinets (see previous pages). The 40-Wattpower section uses the much-loved Push-Pull configuration of 4 EL84valves while the 60-Watt unit uses a pair of EL34s. Both combos and thehead use 4 x 12AX7 valves in the preamp.
