NEW SKATEPARK FOR EXETER A new skatepark opens in Exeter this month, a replacement for the old Flowerpot Skatepark, that The Boarding House built in 2003. The old park had served it's time well, turning out some amazing locals who've gone on to do really well, the most well known perhaps being Barney Page, who basically grew up at Flowepot and now skates for Enjoi, Etnies, RVCA and splits his time between L.A. and Exeter, in between touring other countries for his sponsors. The design for the new park was worked on by a core group of Exeter local BMXers and skaters, along with Matt at Wheelscape – everyone is stoked with it. The post with the final design on The Boarding House’s Facebook page has had 17,000 hits so far, so there’s a lot of interest in this park! There’s an opening Jam being held on Sunday September 29, which should be a great day! Tim Ruck, of The Boarding House said: “Many thanks to Exeter City Council, who since the late 90's have invested in facilities for the town - we have 3 other skatelite parks/ramps in the town - and have worked so hard with the user group to ensure the new park is a good 'un. Find the new park at Flowerpot Playing Fields, Exeter, EX4 1DH.

“My mum used to play me trippy psychedelia when I was in her womb.”

The Ramona FlowersThe Ramona Flowers wowed audiences on the recent Bastille tour, Hot Chip and Ladytron have remixed them and NME describe the band’s textural sound as “a wholly different beast. With fantastic reviews splashed on the pages of some of the UK’s most eminent music mags and the likes of Clash billing the band’s new Ep as “a confident, bewitching document.” They start their tour this month to thunderous applause.

But even good reviews can spark debate as Guardian journalist Paul Lester last month showed writing on the band’s latest accolade – The Guardian Band of the Day, “The singer has the impassioned, declamatory tone of, well, someone pretentiously rhetorical and bombastic"

To which Drummer Ed showed the band’s ability to take the rough with the smooth, “Any music can be conceived to be pretentious surely? You’re putting yourself out there, something you have to do with any work of art which has to involve ego but that’s not a bad thing. At the end of the day, we like what we do and we don’t worry too much if people don’t always connect with it.”

Their popularity however, is undeniable with over 70,000 hits to some of their videos on YouTube and fresh from playing the main stage at Wilderness Festival, Ed said modestly: “We played early but had a great response from the audience.”

It’s clear from Ed’s excited tone that the collaboration with Andy Barlow of Manchester electronica duo Lamb is going well and taking the band’s sound to new levels. “Steve didn’t tend to experiment too much with the higher end of his vocal range but Andy’s really exploring what happens when we push Steve outside of his comfort zone.”

“We can’t really deny our Bristol roots too - except Steve who’s a Londoner - you can hear it through the electro but that’s one of the reasons working with Andy Barlow appealed to us.”

The Ramona Flowers appear to sit within an emerging genre of artists including bands like Sigur Ros and Daughter who all experiment with an ethereal sound – an emphasis on vocal range being key. In terms of influence, Ed humbly says, “We’ve all tended to listen to very similar bands like the Yeah

Bristol based The Ramona Flowers’ Ed Gallimore talks to 247’s Nicola Carley about pushing boundaries, hitting the big time and their upcoming headline tour

magazine | 11 www.247magazine.co.uk

Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix and we love London Grammar who were awesome live so to be compared to people like Sigur Ros really is amazing.” So the secret to their success? “We’ve worked really hard. It might sound clichéd but it really is a surprise that our music has gone down so well considering that we’re just dong what we love though there has been an element of, right place right time.”

It’s something they’ve been doing their whole lives or, in Ed’s case, before he even made an appearance in the world. “Mum used to play me trippy music when I was in the womb – psychedelia and all sorts.” Asked if psychedelically coloured when he emerged he said, “Well it could explain some of our album covers!”

When it comes to the creative process, Ed summed it up as being, “Eclectic. We all write together. One of us will usually have an idea... a melody, lyric or a bass line. We quality test it amongst the rest of us at which point we either ditch it or work with it which can take anywhere between two days and two months.”

They’ve been working together for three and a bit years and it can be tough at times with Steve complaining about all the travelling between Bristol and London, resisting the rest of the band’s urges for him to move down to the South West. On their musical heritage, Ed said that his mum was a classical singer and his dad a guitar player. “We all [the band] grew up around music.”

For the future, Ed’s dreams are fairly modest; “We hope the album goes down well and we get a chance to write another one. And Glastonbury. I really wanna play Glastonbury. It’s just down the road from my home town after all!”

Ed’s advice to fledgling musicians out there, “Have fun. Above all, have fun. If you’re having fun, you’ll be more creative. And keep your chin up. Whatever you do, don’t take criticism personally.”

Beyond the Clones247’s Emma Henderson interviews South Devon’s electric dance producer Tris Mee, known as Beyond the Clones about his new collaboration and single

Check out Beyond The Clones at www.reverbnation.com/beyondtheclones and on Facebook.

How would you describe your music sound? It’s a cross between house hip-hop and vibrant dance music with a little IDM (intelligent dance music) thrown in for good measure. But I do produce other genres too.

How was your experience at Mada Vale Studios with 1Xtra and how has it inspired you? I learned a lot from it, how the industry works better, meeting Wretch 32, MistaJam etc. and industry leaders who gave me great tips and advice on different aspects of my work. I took that away and now I'm doing the finish touches to my new EP.

How did you get into producing and how did you make the move from producing in your bedroom to 1Xtra? Gradually! I started first as a DJ and built up my own gear from there to make the DJing more fun really. I sat back one day and thought okay, I’ll give it a go and I haven’t stopped since. When I produced ‘Glass Town’ and had some other tunes in the pipeline I knew I found a direction that felt different but exciting, so it started off being aired on BBC introducing Devon and kind of went from there really. Next minute I was invited to go to Maida Vale studios for the master class session with 1xtra, and so it begins.

Going back - when did you first discover you could produce music? I started about six or seven years ago and have been on and off producing ever since. I think producing is something you don’t realise you can actually do, you kind of drift into producing as there is a lot to take in and you’re always learning.

What advice would you give to any aspiring producers? Don't hold yourself back, have a fun with it and absorb the feedback you receive.

What’s been the highlight of your career so far? Being part of BBC Introducing Masterclass sessions on BBC Radio 1xtra and generally working with local artists like Little Noosh.

What are Little Noosh like to work with and how did that collaboration come about? Little Noosh has a good way of bringing the music together through her lyrics, my style usually would be quite dark and aggressive but with her melancholies lyrics and amazing voice I had to calm it down which was refreshing. It came about though just through her performing at the Plymouth Unsigned competition a while ago and we just hooked up through music contacts and websites. We’ve just released our single ‘Night Whisper’ and are still working on the EP together.

What do you think of the Devonshire music scene and how do you find being a producer in South Devon? The scene is very alternative and great diversity of genres that people are experimenting with.So far South Devon has been accommodating as far as promotion and gigs are concerned. Also there are some brilliant artists around here, who I want to try and work with in the future.

Where’s your favourite place to see live music in Devon? It used to be Dance Academy in Plymouth but most memories are in the Plymouth Pavilion. But for small key gigs it would have to be the Jolly Farmer.

Where would be your dream gig venue? Hard question, probably somewhere with an amazing back drop scenery.

What are your favourite artists at the moment? The 2 Bears and Atoms For Peace; two complete dance opposites but just as good to listen to too.

Lastly, tell us what the first CD you bought was?MC Hammer, and you can guess which one!

You're playing this month for Liquid Pulse at Plymouth’s Voodoo Lounge - How do you approach your sets?Set approach varies depending on where the event is, set length and whether it's a club or Festival. I go through promos religiously every week for my Intercity radio show, so come the weekend I dip into the fresh picks and add to my 'core set'. I rarely plan whole sets; part of the fun of Djing is making a set flow off the cuff and it's essential to adjust where you go based on crowd feedback. Festival sets tend to be more pre-thought out, but that's largely because they're often only an hour long and you want to pump it up with your biggest material for the bigger crowds. What's your earliest musical memory, when did you realise it was what you wanted to do? I didn't really start making music until my late teens. I remember deciding I'd try and become a Sound Engineer and after my A levels I went to Manchester to do one of the first 'Sound Engineering' courses. By the time I'd finished uni I had started building a very basic bedroom studio set up. I remember reading about you years ago in Future Music magazine, in fact you were in there twice! Was this what started your career? Future Music magazine was instrumental in me getting my first break in a roundabout way!  A demo lead onto an A&R guy getting in touch – nothing came of it initially but a few demos later and I got my chance. That demo was the music for Sureal - 'You Take My Breath Away'.  In the meantime I signed to Additive Records for my more underground trance stuff and it all kicked off from there. What made you decide to set up Lange recordings? I wanted control of what I was doing. To be able to release what I wanted to, when I wanted to. It's never been my intention not to release on other labels, I do occasionally do projects elsewhere, but it's good to have a home, particularly for my own artist albums where I want full control on all

aspects of the project. The labels grown a lot since it's inception in 2004 and of course is now a fully fledged label releasing all number of artists on a weekly basis. We hear you have an album forthcoming, what else do you have planned? It's my third and I've decided to approach it a little differently. I'm releasing club mixes as I make them and then I'm making the final album from the music made this year but giving each track a twist, and making the album something that flows from start to finish. I'm aiming for a more ethereal, home listening album at the end. It's called 'We Are Lucky People' and will be released towards the end of the Year. I have recently mixed the Trance Nation compilation for Ministry of Sound as well. You have travelled extensively this year, what does a typical day off hold in the Lange household?Days off are rare. My wife and I both work seven days a week most weeks, but try and make up for it by totally escaping for a week a few times a year. We usually end up hiding away in the Lake District, Iceland or the Maldives; phones off! When I do grab a day off, it's a night in front of the TV or out for dinner with friends.  Finally, what is your 'never fails' classic in your record box? At the moment it's my remake of the classic 'Hold That Sucker Down' by OT Quartet! I’ve been playing it in most sets since last October and it hasn't failed me yet. See you soon!

BRISTOLChill out With the river Avon running through the heart of the city, water is going to place a big part of your time in Bristol. The Harbourside is perfect for a stroll, with plenty of restaurants and bars at the waters edge to satisfy your thirst – you can even take a boat trip if you fancy it. For grand views, head up to the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Observatory area and for the best view overlooking the bridge whilst sipping a pint, head to the Avon Gorge Hotel. For green space in the centre, Braddon Hill is close to UBU campus, The Downs at the top of Whiteladies Road is also very popular if you’re living in the UBU Stoke Bishop halls. For something bigger, Ashton Court is the place to go, home to a huge stately mansion, the infamous Bristol Balloon Fiesta and Brisfest – the cities annual community driven music festival. There’s a golf course, all weather off road cycle track and plenty of space for chilling. It doubles up well as a ski slope and sledging area when it snows too.

Party on You won’t be short of places to go! The White Bear is a good start your nights out and has some cutting edge underground nights too. The Hill in Cotham is popular, as are the many places on Whiteladies Rd, the Triangle and Park Street. MBargo, Browns, Elbow Rooms and The Woods are our favourites in this area. Club wise, for student focused nights, the popular mid week indie night, propaganda has moved to the Fleece, Killa Disco packs in over 2,000 students every Weds at Synidcate, Oceana on the Harbourside and The Bunker on the Triangle has numerous weekly nights and are also popular. Next door to Bunker, Lizard Lounge is busy too and on Friday nights, Ramshackle at O2 Academy is the place to go. If you like your night life to involve more than cheap drinks and getting smashed, then you must check out the In:Motion series of events at Motion – a huge warehouse near the train station. Nights such as UKF and Shit the Bed (STB) attract the biggest names in the scene. Other venues worth your attention are Lakota in Stokes Croft or Timbuk 2 and The Big Chill Bar, both on Small Street. For live music, the big bands usually play at the O2 Academy on Frogmore St, smaller emerging bands usually The Thekla on East Grove Rd, The Louisiana or the Fleece.

Eat outIf value for money is on your mind, then you can’t beat the ZaZa Bazaar on the Harbourside, buffet style with everything you can think of and change from £10! Burger lovers are in for a treat,

aside from the usual chains, try Guerilla Burger on Baldwin St, The Burger Joint on Whiteladies Rd or Atomic Burger on Gloucester Rd for the real deal. Prego, just off the Downs, is a must for pizza fiends – tucked out of the way but does the best pizza in town. If your not fussy, then Domino’s will sort you out all term with their killer deals! After hours takeouts are all about Magic Roll on the Triangle (alongside a host of others like YoYo Burger and Grillstock). For easy dining, Pieminster is a must on Stokes Croft or in St Nicks Market, wholesome, tasty and good value for money. For something different, try the Olive Shed next to the M-Shed, Mediterranean food next to the water – lush! If you’re feeling flush and out to impress (or you need to keep your folks sweet), you can’t beat Raymond Blanc in Cabot Circus, or try Jamie’s Italian on Park Street.

Max out If you like to shop, you’ll love Bristol! Cabot Circus shopping centre is the cities newest shopping destination with over 100 high street shops including Apple, American Apparael, H&M, Hollister and TopShop. There is a special Student Lock-in on 14 Oct where most shops give big discounts to students for one night only from 6pm-9pm with added entertainment and give-aways. If you favour independent stores over the chains head to Park Street where you’ll find some real gems including Cooshti, Fifty Fifty and BS8. Other shopping areas include Park Row, home to Donuts clothing store, Christmas Steps and the alternative Stokes Croft area with indies galore – our best picks include Dutty and RePsycho - a mecca for retro and vintage clothes.

Get out You won’t get bored living in Bristol – there’s always lots going on. Aside from the cultural and night life, why not set sail on the Matthew – a replica of the English ship that discovered America in 1497 for a whole new way of seeing Bristol and the surrounding area? You can also go rowing in the Harbour if that takes your fancy. Like rock climbing? If so, you’re spoilt here, the challenging gorge on the Portway is a hive of activity every weekend. There’s loads of cultural stuff going on too – centred on the Arnoldfini and The Watershed. The nearby North Coast of Devon or south coast of Wales has some good surfing – head to Croyde, Woolacombe, Port Tablot or the Gower in Pembrokeshire. The whole city is very cycling focused and the best (and cheapest) way of getting around, for more of a thrill, Ashton Court is a great place to ride your bike on the trails and jumps, or just to chill in the sun.

EXETERChill out The quayside is a lovely place to relax – on a hot day you’ll feel like you’re abroad. Sit on the waters edge, grab a drink from one of the bars, or feed the ducks. For £6 you can take a 45 minute round trip with Exeter Cruisers and even stop off at the pub and catch a later boat back…. Another great public space is the Cathedral Green – perfect for eating your lunch or sunbathing – always busy but never too crowded, it has a lovely cosmopolitan atmosphere and is beautiful. Luckily, Exeter is dotted with Valley Parks, there for all to enjoy, right around the city, so you’ll never be too far from some open green space.

Party on Many a good night out has started on Gandy Street – the cool cocktail bar with vaulted ceilings downstairs at Cooling is a good spot, as is the relaxed John Gandy’s. There’s a nice atmosphere at the quayside pubs and bars at night too, we like On the Waterfront, especially when it’s warm enough to sit outside. For live music, the Cavern is an institution – it’s a brilliant underground venue with live bands every night and attracts some big names. Mamma Stones (Archers Street) is another great live music venue well worth checking out for Pop, rock, folk and acoustic music. They do awesome Mexican food, too. The Exeter Phoenix has live bands and even festivals, again attracting some great acts, as well as exhibitions, film etc. In the mood for clubbing? Head to Timepiece (Little Castle Street) – they’ve student nights throughout the week and different music in each room. Late night BBQ at the club too – convenient!

Eat out From takeaways to pub grub, café culture and fine dining you’ll be spoilt for choice in Exeter – it’s a foodie haven. If cake is on your mind head to Ferns (Guildhall Shopping Centre) – better than granny makes it. Pizza lovers should forget about the big chains and head to Old Firehouse (New North Road) – a 19th century listed building which is one of the cities busiest pubs which also boasts a great menu. The gigantic rustic pizzas are legendary. The Prospect Inn pub on the Quay also has a great menu and atmosphere. For a delicious and healthy lunch (yep, both) we love The Plant, on Catherdral Yard, it a veggie joint but meat-eaters won’t be disappointed. There are a multitude of great restaurants nestled around the cathedral, all boasting

a great view and with outside seating. Check out Al Farid Moroccan Restaurant and The Thai Orchid and for a meal to impress a Freshers’ crush head to upmarket Bistro, Cote.

Max out Exeter is a great shopping destination, with something for everyone. The new Princesshay shopping centre has 70 high street shops including Apple, All Saints, Four Seasons, Hollister and TopShop. If you like your shopping trips to be slightly less homogenized, head to Fore Street where you’ll find great independent stores including The Boarding House for extreme sports gear, vintage shops Relevant, Hangar, Reloved, as well as funky new clothes from Off The Hook Clothing and Blue Bananna. Also on Fore Street is McCoys Arcade, which is a real gem and home to some great independent stores including The Real McCoy – a mecca for retro and vintage clothes, No Guts No Glory – an awesome artist run shop and gallery and the world famous Mansons guitar shop. Gandy Street is also well worth checking out and home to more cool boutiques and independents.

Get out You won’t get bored living in Exeter – there’s always lots on. Head to Saddles & Paddles on the Quayside to hire canoes or bikes and go exploring. Also on the quay (actually at the water’s edge) you’ll also find pedalo hire. Try climbing at Quay Climbing Centre (Haven Road), it’s indoors so great if it’s raining…There’s loads of cultural stuff going on too – see what’s on at the Bike Shed Theatre (Fore Street) and Exeter Pheonix (Gandy Street). The nearby North Coast has some good surfing – head to Croyde or Woolacombe. Haldon Forest Park (overlooking Exeter just off the A38) is a great place to ride your bike on the trails and jumps, or just have a picnic…There’s also a Go Ape centre – if swinging through the trees like a monkey tickles your fancy!

Get yourself on the Exeter Trails to discover all the independent traders in the city. See www.exetertrails.co.uk for maps, info and more.

FALMOUTHChill out Falmouth has a multitude of places to hang out, including beaches perfect for lounging on in the sunshine or blustery walks in the winter. Gyllynvase is the most popular of these, with the infamous Gylly Beach Café situated in the middle of it. This is closely followed by Swanpool, which provides Falmouth with the must have hedgehog ice creams - definitely worth a try. As well as Castle and Maenporth. If beaches aren’t really your thing but you still want fresh air, perhaps Kimberely Park is more up your street. Alternatively if you’d rather be inside, Espressini Killigrew Street voted in the top ten coffee shops in the UK has a lovely atmosphere.

Party on For a quiet drink (and maybe some eye candy) HAND Beer Bar (3 Old Brewery Yard, High Street), is the South West’s leading specialty beer bar - great atmosphere and doubles as an exhibition space. Along the same lines, Beerwolf Books (Bells Court, Market Street) is a trendy yet homely bar that’s also a bookshop! If looking for a livelier night, Cribbs Bar (Killigrew Street) arguably offers the tastiest cocktails in town and some of the best DJ nights to boot. Another great DJ (and live music) venue is Toast (Church Street), providing a huge range of cocktail shots and student drink deals on Mondays and Thursdays. A trip to Club I (Church Street), Falmouth’s one and only nightclub is inevitable at some point, though if you want late night partying but wish to avoid it, 5 Degrees Below (Arwenack Street) opens till 3am most nights, just be sure to get in before last entry at 1.30am. When heading out of Falmouth, Bunters Bar, Truro’s gigging hotspot is always worth a look!

Eat outThe Meat Counter (Arwenack Street), Falmouth’s newest eatery sells delicious burgers made with fresh, local ingredients; eat in or take away, reasonably priced and incredibly tasty. If gourmet pizza’s what you’re looking for, Belly Timber (Killigrew Street) is amazing, provides a great menu or you can make your own and there’s deals on a Tuesday! Habaneros Burrito bar, is a must. If looking for somewhere to take the parents, Treehouse Café (Arwenack Street) offers delicious daily specials and a great atmosphere. Arguably the best Chinese restaurant in Falmouth, Mings Restaurant provides lunchtime and early bird deals, great service and the choice of eating in/taking away. If you want seafood, The Shack is the place to go! Good Caribbean food is not hard to come by in Falmouth with the wonderful Cribbs Restaurant (Arwenack Street) at one end of town offering a full menu and its sister bar ???? (Killigrew Street) at the other providing a tapas alternative.

Max out Falmouth only has two ‘high street’ shops (New Look & Peacocks – both on Market street) but has an array of surf/skate shops including Finisterre (High Street), Freeriders (Killigrew Street), Saltrock (Market Street), Annes Cottage, Animal, Sessions (all on Church Street) and Volcom (Arwenack Street). If you like your clothes more ‘yachty’ there’s Henri Lloyd (Market Street), Seasalt and Crew (both Church Street). Or if you prefer something from an independent retailer, there’s the choice of Just Like This (High Street), Sifar, Secrets (both Church Street) or Dizzy (Arwenack Street). Falmouth also has a couple of great vintage shops, Mondo Trasho (High Street) specialising in classic vintage and Wild Pony (Arwenack Street), more ‘Hipster’ vintage. Also stocking new urban clothing.

Get out Hire paddleboards from Gylly Adventures to explore the coastline or hire kayaks/canoes from the watersports centre (Arwenack Street). Alternatively, if you’d rather have the power of an engine at your fingertips there are self drive boats to hire from the Quayside. Get a ferry to St Mawes or Flushing from the Prince of Wales Pier – a good day out. There’s rarely any surf in Falmouth so you’ll have to trek to the North coast for that! Falmouth also has two cinemas Pheonix & The Poly, a bowling alley Ocean Bowl, Crazy Golf (Swanpool), an aquarium (Church Street) and plenty of galleries!

Eating Out

magazine | 23 www.247magazine.co.uk

FALMOUTH Habaneros Burritto Bar2 Quay Street, TR11 3HH For this months review, the Mexican theme took me to Cornwall’s newest (and only) burrito bar; Habaneros. Based in the old loading bar site, this upcoming eatery offers burritos, fajita wraps, rice boxes, tacos and salad boxes. With a choice of locally sourced fillings; chicken, pulled pork, chilli beef or vegetables, and a variety of extras including Cornish cheese, freshly made guacamole, jalapenos, rice, beans, sour cream and salad. As well as an option of salsa and a selection of chilli sauces, which are made on the premises using chillies grown in the restaurant. Other than the food being delicious and reasonably priced (between £4-£5 for standard individual fillings, £1.50 for each extra filling and 25p-80p for extras), it also has the perk of opening from 12 midday until late (did someone say late night kebab alternative?!) and the relief of a clean conscience due to the locally and ethically sourced meats not to mention the completely individually tailored service as everything is made to order. The food was fantastic and the chilli sauce selection was incredible and beautifully spicy, though this is coming from a chilli fiend; those with more tame taste buds may be better off sticking to the salsa. Habanero’s also offer a loyalty card scheme, which I intend to make full use of! Deliciosa!

PLYMOUTH Las IguanasBrewhouse, Royal William Yard, Plymouth PL1 3RP / 01752 226609Specialising in Latin cuisine, Las Iguanas prides itself in freshly prepared food, and it’s all done with a friendly service in a large and spacious environment in the beautiful and vibrant setting of Plymouth’s stylish Royal William Yard. The menu is impressively extensive, with many options including tapas starters, a range of cocktails (including non-alcoholic) and plenty of extra sides. I went for curly sweet potato fries with a delicious (and generous) pot of aioli garlic mayonnaise. And it turned out to be the perfect companion for my main: a Chimichanga, which I chose from the Mexican Classics menu. My Chimichanga (I’m a veggie but of course there are lots of meat options) was a perfectly crisp and fresh tasting tortilla parcel, served on a bed of rice and surrounded by a moat of superb refried beans. It came decorated with soured cream, guacamole, spring onion, garlic and coriander. Let’s take a look inside - beautifully roasted butternut squash with spinach, cream cheese and fine beans. A genius blend. The soft and creamy texture of the spinach and the cheese really compliments the crispy coating of the tortilla. The refried beans have a medium spicy taste, but for that extra kick, you can add some Cholula hot sauce, provided at the table. Fabulously generous portions, faultless food and great service in a pretty setting.

TAUNTON The Old Mexican 18a Lower Middle Street, TA1 1SF / 01823 350291The Old Mexican is ticked away on a quaint cobbled street, behind Taunton’s main high street and is one of the town’s hidden gems. Warm colours, rustic wood and friendly waiting staff create a relaxing, laid back vibe. The restaurant is modestly sized and was full when we visited on a Thursday evening – booking is advisable. If you thought Mexican food was just about nachos and fajitas then be prepared for a shock when you see the menu – mouthwatering and super extensive. (I wish I’d have studied it at home before visiting – see www.theoldmexican.com). They’ve starters, mains, sides, desserts and a great selection of drinks including some creative cocktails –‘Mexican Surfer’ anyone? I was tempted by a starter, but on spying the generous portion sizes I decided to save myself for the main event. This was a good choice as my chicken enchilada was amazing. Juicy pan fried strips of chicken breast with vegetables, wrapped in a tortilla topped with just the right amount of tasty salsa and cheese, baked with melted cheese and finished with salsa and sour cream. A real taste sensation with all the ingredients in the right quantity. It came served with perfect turmeric rice, some stir fried vegetables and a nice side salad. An immensely tasty authentic tasting meal for £12.75. I’ve already decided what I’m going to try on my next visit – recommended.

Mr Nice & Maxxi PAldo Vanucci

RAE & CHRISTIANMercury RisingLate Night Stories

This is the third album from these guys who have been a massive influence on me as a producer – in the ten years they've been away I've tried and failed to match their sound. For those of you that don't know they blend hip hop sensibilities, infused with soul, jazz and reggae and with more than a passing nod to classic songwriting. I was very excited to hear this and wasn't disappointed, times have changed and so has their sound but the quality is still there, guests include Kate Rogers, Jazzy Jeff, Tony D and Masta Ace amongst some lesser known ones. Check the technique is classic Rae & Christian, banging hip hop beats, cuts and scratches for those that miss the golden era and pretty much anything that Kate Rogers does is worth checking. If you missed the days of Grand Central records with the likes of Aim, Tony D etc. then you should check this asap, if you don't know their history but like quality downbeat then still check this.

TYKE DogsPlayaz Records

We haven’t heard a solid release from Tyke for a while but “Dogs” brings him smashing the quality of his jump up production back again. It’s a very tight and clean mix down as we would expect from him – this tune is the driving hook baseline and combination of dark atmospheric samples that work so well together. It’s received strong radio play from Crissy Criss and DJ Hype, also been hearing and seeing a lot of reloads on this one in the clubs. If you like this check out the whole EP release to but this track certainly stands out from the two. Hopefully we’ll hear more from Tyke towards the end of this year as he has yet to make an imprint on the scene like he did last year. Playaz once again keeping the standard strong in 2013.

ALEX BARCKReunionSonar Kollektiv

I thought nothing would come close to the Rae & Christian album this month but stand aside for this dark horse. Everything in this guy’s credentials screams out thoroughbred, half of Jazzanova, a&r guy at Sonar Kollektiv and a twenty year career in djing. With every track I was more and more impressed – amazing vocals from guests over a bed of electronica and the odd sample, which doesn't sound like much but in this guys hands is a lesson in perfection. This has everything from ice cold emotive cinematic opener through to cool dance head nodder on "don't hold back", this guy can even make a grease sample sound cool. I bet he is one of those guys you meet who just about everyone gets on with and wants to hang with more. Buy this, everyone.

MAMPI SWIFTSoldiersCharge Records

There’s so much to say about this tune even though it’s a bit more repetitive than most drum and bass releases these days. Mampi Swift has officially brought back his old skool signature production style again which fits so well with the minimal structure we hear these days in drum and bass production. The main hook is dark and aggressive and drums that sit really well with the bass but at the same time slapping you across the face upfront in the mix down. We have the full album release from Mampi to look forward to, as it has been a very long time coming. If this is anything to go by then the wait will certainly be worth it. Massive DJ tool to so the DJ support is endless from Friction to Bryan Gee everyone is lapping up this release so expect to hear it everywhere in the drum and bass scene.

PAPER TIGERLaptop SuntanWah Wah records

Not heard of these guys before but with everyone from Joe Goddard to Gilles Peterson giving them props they must be doing something right. Their record label is home to some amazing talent, this album feels like a slight detour into more electronic areas, the influences are still similar with hip hop and jazz coming through heavily and add that to hefty amounts of bass and bleeps and you have a very interesting outing. I feel they shine best on the more uptempo tracks so if you are into leftfield electronica with some mean melodies and punchy eats then you should definitely check this. In fairness to them if the last two albums hadn't been so exceptional they would have got me more hyped.

BREAK Music Is BetterSymmetry Records

The consistency of Break’s production over the past several years has blown all of our minds. This track combines all of his production qualities so well. His soulful element he brings to the table along with ripping deep bass hooks absolutely kills it one this one. The intro is a perfect build up to what is eventually delivered so much so that I honestly think my grandma would even understand this style of drum and bass. The guys is so versatile and it pays off in his favour as he always stand out from the rest and always bring ‘something different’ to the table (only the heads will like the pun). The label boss of symmetry records has done it again go and listen to this now if you haven’t heard it already and the music certainly speaks for itself on this one.

WILKINSONHeartbeat, Calyx & Teebee RMXRam Records

This is probably one of the biggest tunes this year from DJ, raver to radio. It’s getting smashed all over the world. I first heard Andy C play the original instrumental and was blown away – couldn’t wait for it to get released. Then came the disappointment when I heard the vocal version with P Money and Arlissa – even though they did a good job I felt that the vibe of the vocals didn’t do the track justice... Then Calyx & Teebee bring some serious remix business and deliver one of the best tunes and strongest tunes this year commercially and a firm favourite within the whole scene. Almost feel like there RMX work is stronger than their own material at the moment. Don’t even need to ask... I know you have already heard this tune.

New Releases Arash Torabi

CRAZY ARMThe Southern WildXtra Mile

The South West heroes’ third album is acoustic, but don’t think of it as a mellow/spaced-out set. I saw them play these songs not too long ago, and they blew me away. There’s as much energy and direction here as you would find in their electric sets, but it’s channeled in a different way. Harmonies are razor-sharp (Darren‘s co-singer, Vicky really shines on this album), the playing is precise and their spirit flows across every song on this album. There are tributes to struggling women and radical activists, a spiritual song from the 19th Century, a folk version of Roasting River (previous B-side) and so much more. A stunning side-project. Let’s hope there’ll be more of this, as well as their regular activities.

MEGAN WYLERThrough The NoiseNowever Records

Well, what can I say? (I know, I don’t like reviews that start like that either!) Seriously though, it’s hard not to be knocked out by the beauty of this record, which is the Colorado-raised folk artist’s debut album. The title song (also previously a single) is heartbreakingly good, and Can‘t Sleep is another highlight. Of all the current crop, Megan is every bit the equal of Meg Baird, Unthanks or Laura Veirs. And if you like any of those names, you’ll love her too. Haunting vocals, glorious arrangements, brilliant production (care of Adem Ilhan, Domino recording artist and Radiohead drummer, Philip Selway’s producer) and fantastic songs. A masterpiece. Hard to believe this is her first album.

JOHN LENNON MCCULLAGHNorth South Divide359 Music

He’s got a Beatles haircut, he calls himself John Lennon and he tries to sound like Bob Dylan. One of Alan McGee’s first signings for his second post-Creation label is a 15-year-old songwriter, who’s actually called John Lennon, but nobody bothered to advise him to change his name before starting a recoding career. His songwriting shows promise: often mature beyond his years, but he also suffers from school-poetry-competition style lyrics. McGee may be attempting to regain his Oasis glories: the gimmick element’s there, and he has a high profile, so he may even pull it off. But this young singer needs to get his OWN identity and develop his technique: quit the Dylan impressions and drop the “Lennon“.

DAVID LYNCHThe Big DreamSunday Best

“One foot had a red sock, the other had blue. It’s Tuesday, baby, where are you?” Oh dear. Unfortunately it’s that time again, when David Lynch feels the need to remind us just how weird and clever he is. And so here is the follow-up to 2011’s equally-dreadful Crazy Clown Time. Yep, it’s the same routine: Lynch spouting a load of verbal cow dung with a voice that sounds like a castrated wasp, over some very ordinary music. Of course, the intellectuals will fall over themselves in adoration and stroke their chins to death. The major let-down here is that Lynch is trying desperately hard to be “weird“, but the results are very mediocre, predictable and deeply uninspiring.

HOODZEERoom SessionsSBTV

New mixtape from Hoodzee a grime star on the rise, not sure that I'm the right age to be giving you the low down on someone who is about the age of my daughter but here goes. I'm not deep with these grime kids, last time I kept up with all the up n coming ones the beats were very sparse, punchy with minimal melodies, videos were filmed on a handheld recorder down an alley with a bunch of mates jumpin around. This has beats that would easily sit alongside major label productions with some wicked soul like samples and beats punching through, some nice versions of well known beats and this guys flow has a wicked edge, again you can see labels jumpin at this guy. In a couple of years Hoodzee could be up there with Wretch 32 and showing Tinie how to stay hood while blowing up the charts.

Backbone Louk

TOUCHE AMOREIs Survived ByDeathwish Inc

Many are but I'm not convinced. Touché Amoré are the logical progression of emo's ongoing need to escape the trappings of its past. So we have well constructed post-hardcore guitars and poppy hooks, we have reined in powertronics, drums never too wild, songs never too unleashed, and then we have Jeremy Bolm's ever-grating groan, shouting over everything (even the delicate interlude 'Praise / Love') in a forlorn attempt to keep their hardcore kudos in the black. I'm sure it works if you want nothing else from music other than formulas and the stale whiff of white male desperation but to these ears, it's the sound of nothing but music turning in on itself and losing sight of what matters.

JOTON Greyspace EP Mastertraxx

Ever since my introduction to techno some years ago when I stumbled upon a record in Bigga (and we're talking what some fifteen years or so now), Mike Humphries name has been synonymous with the genre. His Mastertraxx imprint, although only being in existence since 2004 (following from Mike's many releases on Punish, Red Seal and numerous others) has been consistent to rely on for quality. Even homegrown local talent such as Torquay's Rowlanz have released on there, and the new EP from Joton exudes sheer charisma throughout. Choice cuts are GS 01 and the remix of Vegim's 'Myths and Legends' which keep it funky and meticulous but with a driving bassline throughout, that simply works wonders.

BELLOWS & BREAMGregoire Is My NameWaving Not Drowning

Curio albums used to be all the rage in the late '60s so it's refreshing to find New Brunswick quartet, Bellows & Bream, reaching back to those hazy, crazy, psychedelic days and pulling out a peach of a record. Almost a tribute to the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, 'Gregoire...' is brimful of wry observations on the economy ('Harrods'n'Sods'), gender role play ('Girl Georgia'), mental illness ('Who's Afraid Of Virginia's Wolf?') and environmental devastation ('Worth First!' – choice couplet: 'Not on my watch / My watch is quite expensive'), all of which find pianos, tubas, banjos and percussion rollicking in the hay together with scant regard for musical rules. One for the after-show party, methinks.

KATHRYN WILLIAMSCrown ElectricOne Little Indian

She's been around the musical block a few times, has Kathryn Williams, yet the freshness and purity at the heart of her tenth album, 'Crown Electric', betrays her seasoned status. Delicate and lovingly produced, and with echoes of The Unthanks, the likes of 'Out Of Time' and the amazing 'Morning Twilight' coo and gently tug at your heartstrings, not wishing to pull you into a dark hole, just encourage you towards something familiar and comforting. Whether accompanied by lush strings or plucked acoustics, Williams' clear uncluttered voice lends itself to the whimsy. But there are times when you wish her soft croon would break into desperation, just so we know that she suffers along with the rest of us.

BINNY No Surrender Orbis

There has been a rise in the number of productions which steer away from the rather substance lacking 'more house sounding than techno' by numbers dross that has been flooding the record shops, which is certainly a plus point in my eyes. On 'No Surrender' Binny has managed to capture the essence of late 90's techno but keeping the production as crisp and modern sounding as possible with four instantly accessible cuts that can fit at various points throughout the night. Obviously the more frenetic 'No Surrender' and 'Future Echo' win pride of place for yours truly, but for the deeper Detroit sound check out 'Parallel World' and also fans of Berlin will like the excellent 'Stephen Brown Mix'.

NEW MODEL ARMYBetween Dog And WolfAttack Attack

Those old enough to remember New Model Army's windswept goth-rock heyday will recall a band who took themselves and their fans far more seriously than any other sub-pop group in the land. And they're still at it – standing their radical ground and churning out percussive, restrained, Killing Joke-esque dirges like ‘Horseman’ and ‘Storm Clouds’ to the faithful Family (their lifelong band of followers). This, their twelfth album, eschews the band's usual guitar-led raggle-taggle stomp in favour of something far more introspective and ambitious. Clearly, their manager's death, the loss of their studio and the departure of long-serving bassist Nelson have left a profound mark on the band. Artistically, however, they remain magnanimous yet indignant. Respect due.

ANTI-LANTERNSGentlemantleBirdlip

A beautiful record from the same stable that brought us The Back Teeth, 'Gentlemantle' takes all the effortless grace of James Taylor, Neil Young and Jackson Browne and feeds it to a wake of baying vultures with crust punk patches for feathers. A bizarre jarring of styles, 'Bendle' is lovelorn desolation that physically hurts, 'Christmas In Auschwitz' is the greatest hippycore ballad ever written, while the title track walks like a respected member of society yet holds deep depraved secrets within its lofty gait. Anti-Lanterns could be the greatest band on the planet if they weren't so self-cripplingly honest. The planet doesn't deserve them anyway. Let's just keep them as our little secret. I won't tell if you don't.

JONAS KOPP X Tresor

Ah Tresor, yet again delivering another track that will have pride of place in my record box for the remainder of the summer! Everything about this is so simple and effective and you can spot the influences on this release a mile off. Taken from DJ Hell's phenomenal 'Kern' mix, Argentinian born Jonas's 'X' is best likened to if Lil Louis took a trip to Berlin. On 'X' A 'French Kiss' style organ melody takes place over some intricate percussion and building vocal loops. Add to this a brooding but very driving kick drum and it is of no surprise that most of the bigger names in the Techno scene are all over this one.

SKY LARKINMotto Wichita

It's not a particularly original conceit but Leeds quartet, Sky Larkin's grasp of mindful indie-rock is to be applauded. Somewhere between Sleater-Kinney's angular playfulness, Throwing Muses' reflective demeanour and Sonic Youth's prickly down-strummed guitars, the likes of 'Newsworthy' and 'Carve It Out' still retain an element of folksy charm, shot through with understated vim and vigour. Things get more intriguing on the fuzz-bass driven 'Frozen Summer' and the unravelling 'Overgrown' where Katie Harkin, fresh from her time served on tour with Wild Beasts, steers her cohorts through the emotional spectrum, coming out the other side with dignity intact. It isn't aiming to win any prizes but 'Motto' stands proud as a clever and concise underground pop record.

BITCH WITCHBitch WitchCubo de Sangre

Is this for real? Three Spanish women with a Charlie Manson complex and crosses on their foreheads, screaming like the possessed over the most rudimentary punk rock imaginable, stealing Black Flag's logo and turning it into a cult-friendly totem of nihilism and stealing early Distillers songs and dragging them to hell? I guess it is real as I'm listening to it, reviewing it and scared shitless by it. Merging sludge, D-beat and psyche-punk the trio concoct bizarre and unpleasant songs like 'Starchild' and the tortuous 'Charlie Christ Is Rising' with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. The album ends with 'A Hell On Heels aka Disfuck': a grimy Discharge impression that sets out their stall in no uncertain terms. Awesome!

RADIO TRANSMISSION SFSK Involve

Like the Binny release this month this is another track which has influences of old but with modern production, and simplicity is again the key! Coming from Spain, this follows up nicely from Mark Broom's mix of 'Thrive' which came out a couple months ago. 'SFSK' consists of four tracks that keep the percussion grooving but also managing to add some melodic elements throughout. 'Search' is the stand out track for me with an awesome Detroit chord sound getting filtered about into oblivion, however 'Knowledge' also has some funky and deep characteristics and a lovely bassline that shouldn't be ignored. I think this is a very limited run so keep an eye out for it in all good record shops.

CLAPTON DEATH PLUNGEGet Over ItHardboiled

When Eric Clapton's four-year-old son fell out of a 53rd floor window to his death in 1991, one of the newspaper headlines the next day was 'Clapton Death Plunge'. So are this band a bunch of sickos trading on tragedy? Of course! But, as with GG Allin, Vulvectomy and Cliff Richard, there have to be bands and artists working at the polar extremes in order for there to be harmony in the world. For every Cher Lloyd there must be a Clapton Death Plunge. And with astonishing anarcho-rock rantathons like 'Let's All Do The Existential Malaise' and 'A Death In The Family' to their canon, CDP are definitely worth getting into arguments over. Just don't tell Eric.

THEATRE9 – 14 SeptemberBristolTWELTH NIGHT, Tobacco Factory, Raleigh Road, Bristol, BS3 1TF, 0177 9020344, tobaccofactorytheatre.com, 8pm, £14Following a critically acclaimed London run and extensive UK and international tours, Filter Theatre again tour nationally with TWELFTH NIGHT this autumn. Originally commissioned by RSC Artistic Director Michael Boyd as part of the RSC's Complete Works Festival, Filter’s characteristically radical and riotous interpretation of this well worn classic reaffirms their reputation as one of the most consistently inventive and critically acclaimed theatre companies working today. Here nothing is hidden, and no two shows are the same: decisions on the direction of the performance are taken on the hoof as the narrative unfolds, and each unique performance develops in a different way each night. In this informal production the stage is covered in cables, technical equipment, synthesisers, microphones, amplifiers and supporting instruments that enable Filter to create the world of the play through sound. Performed under house lights with actors in casual costumes, the experience is more akin to a rock concert than classic theatre, creating an exhilarating live chemistry between actor, audience and text. RIDDICK Released: 4 SeptemberDir: David Twohy Starring: Vin Diesel, Karl Urban and Katee Sackhoff2013/US/119 min In this third film featuring the title character Riddick, the bald bas-ass, finds himself left for dead on a sun-scorched planet. But guess what? He is not alone as a hidden race of aliens turn up to make his life a bit more difficult. Just to add his workload, a bunch of bounty hunters arrive to bring him back for a financial reward. This sci-fi horror will hopefully return to the roots of the series, Pitch Black, and provide as scares as well as action thrills.

WHITE HOUSE DOWN (12A)Released: 6 September Dir: Roland Emmerich Starring: Channing Tatum, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx2013/US/131 minPoliceman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting the President. His little girl expected him to get the job, so to keep her happy they go on a tour of the White House. Unfortunately, a group of terrorists also decide to take their own tour of the building, but end up taking the president hostage. This is definitely Die Hard in the Whitehouse, with Tatum even supporting a scruffy white vest, but this will hopefully be more Yippee Ki-yay rather than Yippee Ki-No thanks!

ABOUT TIME (12A) Released: 4 SeptemberDir: Richard Curtis Staring: Rachel McAdams, Bill Nighy and Domhnall Gleeson 2013/UK/123 minIn this romantic time-travelling tale, Tim’s (Domhall Gleeson) 21st birthday present is that he discovers the ability to go back in time. At Tim’s tender age he makes a few mistakes in his love life, but he decides to change what happened and without realising it creates a few problems for the wider world. A good cast including Bill Nighy, and the writer Richard Curtis’ magic touch (Love Actually and Notting Hill) mean this should be time well spent in the multiplex.

DIANA (TBC)Released 20 SeptemberDir: Oliver Hirschbiegel Starring: Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews and Douglas Hodge2013/UK/TBCThe Hollywood obsession with our monarchy continues with this dramatization of the last two years of Princess Diana's life. The film illustrates her passionate campaign against land mines and her relationship with surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan. Expect controversy to surround the release of the film, but with Naomi Watts in the title role expect her to inhabit the ‘People’s Princess’ with great aplomb.

HAWKING (TBC) Released: 20 SeptemberDir: Stephen Finnigan Starring: Stephen Hawking, Nathan Chapple and Martin King 2013/US/TBCHawking is the extraordinary story of the planet's most famous living scientist, told for the first time in his own words and by those closest to him. Made with unique access to Hawking's private life, this is an intimate and moving journey into his world, both past and present. This should be an interesting portrait of one of the great minds of our generation.

PRISONERS (TBC) Released: 27 SeptemberDir: Denis Villeneuve Starring: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Melissa Leo2013/US/TBCAfter his six-year-old daughter and her best friend are kidnapped on Thanksgiving, small town carpenter Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) butts heads with young, brash detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) in charge of the investigation. Keller finds the man he thinks is responsible, but he is not supported by the justice system. So he takes matters into his own hands and captures the suspected kidnapper to make him confess. A fine cast and an interesting plot should make this thriller worth a watch.

FilmsCompiled by our resident film buff, John Barker

RUSH (15)Released: 13 SeptemberDir: Ron Howard Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Olivia Wilde and Daniel Brühl 2013/US/123 min

Set against the sexy, glamorous golden age of Formula 1. Racing around the 1970s, the film is based on the true story of a great sporting rivalry between handsome English playboy James Hunt (Hemsworth), and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Austrian driver Niki Lauda (Bruhl). The story follows their distinctly different personal styles on and off the track, their loves and the astonishing 1976 season in which both drivers were willing to risk everything to become world champion. Hopefully the film will be as thrilling off the track as it is on the track.

Cornwall

It was tour time again so off to a blisteringly hot mainland Europe we trundled. First stop, er, London house show (Astbury Castle, 2nd Aug). So many people crammed into a modest kitchen. So many people left outside in the yard. So much heat. First up were roots-rap-radical duo, ALT TRACK, whose digi-rock assault now finds samples/beats boff Mickey Dey on drums and it was dynamically awesome. Next up, MUNCIE GIRLS, who proved once again that their free-flowing pop-punk is something of a treasure. It was too packed to see CAVES but the Bristol trio sounded tight and triumphant. And we had a rare old sweat-sozzled time. Onwards! To Heidelberg, Germany, where we were playing at the amazing Villa Nachttanz venue-cum-festival in heat of 38°C (3rd Aug). Thank heavens for the backstage paddling pool. Before us, gypsy-folk-punk quintet, BUDZILLUS, were a whirling dervish of sonic ideas and Bordello songcraft, with bizarre home-made instruments straight out of the Frankenstein manual. Meanwhile ACHTUNG SPITFIRE SCHNELL SCHNELL!! were cooking up a surf-garage punk treat bedecked in matching sailor tops. Fancy that. Onto Mönchengladbach for Horst fest (Germany, 4th Aug). The heat is getting stupid now. 40°C and no pool. We got there as Black Flag-saluting punks, SNIFFING GLUE, were reminding us of the roots of angry, shitty rock'n'roll. Over on the main stage, COSMO JARVIS was kicking up a newly-rockified storm but the quirks of old carried more resonance; leaving DISCO ENSEMBLE to make like emo ponces. Onto Heemskerk, Netherlands, where we were playing an anti-squat called The Creche (5th Aug). An anti-squat is an unoccupied public building rented out cheaply to tenants to stop it being squatted. We were joined by our friends, SWEET EMPIRE with their pop-punk irreverence and local posse, THE CUT/UP with their post-hardcore jitter-punk. And finally, to Knoflook: the greatest squat we know of in the Netherlands (Den Bosch, 6th Aug). Ourselves and WILLEM ANTILLECTUAL played outside on the street and the nearby cops didn't bat an eyelid. Amazing, quite surreal and a big relief. Back home to the White Rabbit for a mixed bag of aural treats (Plymouth, 10th Aug). Unassuming trio, PUPS, dished out some neat '90s college rock with a dash of Rival Schools. Plymouth newbies, BOXKITE, took the nasty rasp of Ceremony and wrapped it in quasi-psychotic vocal vomit. Ace. SUPER SECRET CLUB's post-punk shoutiness was simple and effective. Post-hardcore duo, THE JERKS, were playful and amazing, joining the dots between Torche and Dischord Records. Leaving the huggable GREAT CYNICS to cast their uplifting Bragg-esque pop punk over our hearts and reel us all in. Good work, one and all. Psyche-rock doesn't come much more intense than Maryland's ARBOURETUM (Tiki Bar, Plymouth, 15th Aug). Wallowing in English folk influences, old Sabbath records and stoner dirges, the band's intention to take its audience on a headlong journey through space and time seems to be working. Before them, HEAD OF PROGRAMMES laid down their soporific Americana with self-mocking aplomb, and HAUNT THE WOODS were two young men in touch with their grandparents' record collections, laying down heart-wrenching '70s folk with humility and poise.Beautiful Days fest (Devon, 16-18th Aug) was brillopads. Go online for full review (www.247magazine.co.uk).Finally, I drove THE JERKS to the Big Smoke to support TORCHE (Garage, London, 19th Aug). The Plymouth duo were brilliant, and the intense FAT GOTH were everything their name doesn't suggest, but Torche were PHENOMENAL. The heaviest band you'll ever see but with the poppiest hooks this side of Hüsker Dü. Torche are the kings of sludge and the court jesters of melody. Untouchable. See-ya bye.

WIN: HALLOWEEN MASKED BALL TICKETS The UK’s biggest Halloween party takes place in near Helston in darkest, deepest Cornwall on 26 October. Put together by the team behind the hugely successful springtime Masked Ball, the line-up features guests including Orbital, Sister Bliss (with Faithless), Grandmaster Flash and many more. Aside from the music, what makes this event so special is the massive production across the site, the UFO crash lands into the Ball again this year, there are numerous hidden musical areas in the woods and all ticket holders need to dig out a mask and make an effort to dress for the occasion – posh clothes, fancy dress or your party outfit – the choice is yours! This year the Ball has a special warm-up session on Friday before the main Ball on the Saturday, all ticket holders can camp over and there is an option to upgrade to Bell Tents or Hobbit Huts (Tipi’s all sold out!). See the full line-up and get tickets from www.maskedball.net

The Rock GardenTorquay's newest suntrap and live music venue The Rock Garden has been an instant hit! The town centre location behind Fleet Walk has become a destination venue by day and night. Freshly made pizzas served all day followed by a Jam Night once a week and local bands at weekends mean there's always a reason to return. Photos: SHOTBYROB.COM.

BoardmastersAnother year, another Boardmasters it seems, but this time around it had more soul, not so much corporate sponsorship and a good all round vibe. Sold out and the best one yet, with the music extended over three days at Watergate Bay. Basement Jaxx where great and Ben Howard pulled in the teens and well as the older folk, whilst lesser profile arenas were pumping all weekend – yes, Denture Disco and Marley we are talking about you!
