To our ever-passionate, active, and dedicated director of the
University Learning Resource Center, Mr. David A. Cabonero; to our
supportive, devoted, and zealous library staff; to our relentless and dutiful Library Working Students (LWS), colleagues, a pleasant
afternoon to all of us.
A journey of thousand miles always starts with nothing but a single
step. And in life, this step could take different forms and may occur at
different times. In education, for instance, finishing the elementary grade is one step, graduating the high school level is another one, and entering
the tertiary level may not be just a mere step but a leap into anybody’s
life. My point is there is always a thing that marks our very beginning.
I am well aware that every student in here is living a life more
different than what the students outside the corners of this room have. One that is more complicated and challenging because instead of keeping
busy on doing your homework or projects yet you are fulfilling a great
responsibility which I believe none of you had dream of. Maybe some of
you missed it so much to surf the internet and log on to their favored
social media as long as they want to, others are longing to grasp the
feeling of going home early and waking up late, few could possibly be
tired of those rush hours and overtimes that they experience during their
duty hours and demanding to sense the reverberating sensation of freedom within themselves.
Well, these are only few of the scrambled occurrences that Library
Working Students experience during their stay in the library. And indeed
it is not an easy job to work and study at the same time. I was also a
Library Working Scholar before so I really knew how high the pressure is. In extent, maybe some had made up their minds to quit this
responsibility after some time. But let me tell you this, the world out
there is never a bed of roses. Your experiences now is only inch or two
of what is present behind these piles of books and for a rational person it is quite practical to prepare for such mystery lying outside the gates of
this university. Nobody knows what awaits you and for that reason you
should take all the risks to gather and store experiences that will gear you up.
During my student librarian days, I did also equate my library
responsibilities into a helping hand, especially in my finances, and
nothing more. But when I was looking forward towards looking for a job,
I ended up realizing that my experiences in here help me to have an edge over the next step in my life.
In one way or another, I was thought to deal with people more
appropriately, practice professionalism before I can even get a
profession, and the most important thing is that I was molded to the
attitude of finishing whatever I started.
I believe that every one of you aims for a vivid future and surely experiences being a student librarian will make that even clearer. Yes, I
know that behind those smiles of yours is a sad face full of uncertainties,
confusion, and fear, yet always be still and never let yourselves be a
loser before the real battle even get started. Never let your image of the future be out of sight because the clearer you perceive it, the closer you
move towards it. Sufferings are part of everyone’s journey but should
never considered as a negative element, tough it often breaks us into
pieces, nevertheless it teaches us how to fix our selves out of those pieces and become a whole—which is the most important thing. It let us taste
defeat for us to be a winner, it allows us to fall so as to learn how to rise,
paths lead to endpoints and it is always up to us to figure which is
which.
In this maze, things we see, we don’t feel it. And the things we
don't see, we feel isn’t. But sometimes, what we see isn’t and what we don’t see actually is. I mean this world is full of ambiguous things and
it is our job to make them clear for our own good.
Mistakes can always occur along the way but always keep in mind
that a pencil has its own eraser for it to undo what is inaccurate and its
lead to be able to write a new one. That is, there is always a space for
another chance, and another try. People may look down on you on your mistakes but don’t be annoyed and take that as your signal for another
round to do the right thing.
Being in the context of library working scholar is so much rich
with experiences. And if we will try to enumerate them will probably
take us a day, but to give you an insight, I would tike to share some of those unforgettable experiences I had. When I was a student before, I
happen to venture into two difficult paths in my life. I experienced not
to eat my lunch, not until after cleaning somebody’s garden in the
person of late Mdm. Alice Natino, may she rest in peace, while being a student librarian at the same time. Through the generosity of Mdm.
Evelyn Rizardo and Mdm. Fely Baliton, I was able to surpass few of
the hunger moments of my life. These experiences served as my bridge
to cross the roaring waves of my life for it definitely helped me to obtain the most prestige scholarship in the world, the international
fellowship program founded by Ford foundation based in New York
and this benchmarked the very beginning of my golden days. At
present, I can say that I am one of the successful student librarians that
SMU had ever produce. I am sharing these things not boost myself but
to let you know that its not the beginning that mattered most, but it is
how you continue and finish the race you started.
It is a very wrong connotation when you assumed yourself as less
fortunate than the other students in the campus because of the kind of responsibility you are in. It is because it is them who are less fortunate
at some aspect. They missed the chance of having a family that will
stay by their side in the rough and smooth roads of life.
It is very normal thing to do inside a family to empower one
another but in return the family itself requires every member to function their roles in accordance to the norms of that family to ensure a smooth
relationship in it. The family of Library Staffs and the Library Working
Scholars can be likened into a body and its members consist the body’s
parts. For the entirety of a body function. A damage to a part means damage also to the body as a whole. And to ensure a sound
performance, every part should take all the risks needed in accordance
to their function. Surely, a united family of Librarian and Library
Working Scholars emerges after all these things are put into action.
To wrap it up, though we are only ambassadors in this imperfect world we should make the best out of our limited time. Truly, we are
surrounded by abyss of unknowns but right decision at the time and at
the right place can lead us in every step of our journey towards our
goals. We should never be tired of aiming because be a bright morning always comes after the darkness of the night. And for you, beloved
Library Working Scholars, keep in mind that experience teaches best.
Always prove something out of yourselves and remember to treasure
