Welcome to ADIFF 2016!Welcome to the world of the African Diaspora International Film Festival (ADIFF). In our reality, people of diverse origins, nationalities, orientations and backgrounds come together to celebrate the world of images and ideas that depict the human experience of people of color all over the world.

The international Black communities—whether in Europe, Latin America or Africa – continue to play a disproportionately marginal role in the art of cinema. Further, many creative and visionary films lay languid, collecting dust without the light of a screening due to the lack of distribution structures or movie theaters in the hands of more sensitive programmers. Stereotypical images, myths and persistent bad taste characterize many of the films that pass for “good movies” in the name of a “numbers” game that determines whose world will get to be shown and whose won’t.

By placing the spotlight on innovative films that otherwise would be ignored, ADIFF has created a privileged platform for many of these films. The list of titles that have found a distribution deal thanks to their participation in the festival is long and still growing.

We thank filmmakers, ADIFF’s old and new family of cinephiles, the theaters, ADIFF’s former and current staff and all those who, against all odds, have helped us for the last twenty four years in our mission to enhance the cultural DNA of New York City and beyond.

We thank you all and wish you a wonderful ADIFF 2016!

SPOTLIGHT ON NIGERIAN CINEmAThe 2016 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) City to City program focused on Lagos, Nigeria. The selection was curated by Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of the

TIFF. “Vital, complex and inspiring, Lagos is entirely unique,” said Bailey. “The city of Fela Kuti’s music has also given birth to one of the world’s most vibrant film industries. The 1,000 low-budget features ‘Nollywood’ produces each year generate about $1 billion in box office. Now, from that commercial hotbed, a new generation of filmmakers is emerging to both advance and challenge Nollywood. Bigger budgets, greater artistic ambition - the new cinema of

Lagos is bold, exciting, and ready to take its place on the international stage.”

ADIFF is pleased to invite you to discover the US premiere of four of the eight films presented in TIFF’s City to City program.

Flamenco is synonymous with Span-ish culture. Since its inception, theorists have sidelined the fundamental contri-bution of Afro-Andalusians. Commercial exploitation of the American colonies brought hundreds of Africans to Spain to be sold as slaves, forming a population who over time managed to gain space in a society wrought with racial prejudices. Music and dance were a fundamental part of their expression and the most important affirmation of their identity. As the black population began to disappear from Spain in the late 19th century, so too did their contribution to this extraordinary art form. In Gurumbé, their story is finally told. Directed by M. Dimitri delivers Pizzas for a living - but as a young black man he is faced with "ex-tra" challenges while navigating the city. The film explores the reasons why so many black men have concerns of unfair treatment, especially while driving. We get to see the psychology behind Dimi-tri's attitude towards the police, through piercing flashbacks to his prior experi-ences with the cops - from childhood to present day, the cops have always had their eye on him. Directed by Paul Sa-piano, USA, 2016, Comedy, Drama, 94 min, English.
