WEST VIRGINIA QUILT DOCUMENTATION PROJECT

We documented some great quilts during the Jackson’s Mill Retreat the last several years, so let’s try it again in 2020. The goal is to gather information on quilts made before 1970 that were made in, or currently reside in, West Virginia. Make an appointment (Friday, March 20th between 10am and 3pm) and a team of volunteers will measure, photograph, date and ID the pattern. Bring information and pictures of the quiltmak-er, if available, but “maker unknown” quilts are also welcomed. Data gathered will be stored in the WV Cul-ture Center Archives and will be uploaded to the Quilt Index (www.quiltindex.org). Information about quilt ownership will remain confidential. Contact Fran Kordek for information or to make an appointment (304-594-1208 (H), 304-614-1359 (C), [email protected]). If you enjoy getting up close and personal to some pretty special quilts, contact Fran to volunteer. More information about the documentation project is on the WV Quilters, Inc. web site on the Documentation page (www.wvquilters.org). The West Virginia Quilt Documentation Project is sponsored by West Virginia Quilters, Inc., in collaboration with the West Virginia Division of Culture and History.

Submitted by the WV Quilt Documentation Project Committee

SCHOLARSHIP—to honor MARTHA OFFUTT

Martha Offutt, one of the five instructors at the first Lewis County Quilt Retreat, passed away in October, 2016. She was recognized at our 20th anniversary in 2016. Martha taught quilting and needlework through-out West Virginia. From one-day classes to week-long events, Martha shared her expertise and extended her friendship to thousands of students in our state and beyond. She had a wide range of skills and taught classes from Applique to Hawaiian Quilting to Dimensional Embroidery. She designed patterns and was probably most well-known for her West Virginia Rose. Martha was active with the West Virginia Quilters and served on the steering committee for the first Quilt Documentation project. This committee’s work resulted in publication of the book, West Virginia Quilts and Quiltmakers, in 2000.

After Martha’s passing in 2016, her family listed organizations that were important to her as sugges-tions for memorial donations. The Lewis County Quilt Retreat was one of those. A scholarship of $100. will be offered to each of two students for the 2020 retreat. The scholarship recipient will be chosen based on a brief application from the individual or a nomi-nation from one or more others (retreat participants, guild members, or other friends). The person must be a first-time participant in the Lewis County Quilt Retreat with the 2020 retreat. To apply, or nominate someone, submit a regular retreat registration form without payment and a brief (300 words or less) statement about the person and his/her interest in learning to quilt or to im-prove existing skills. Applications, nominations are due December 1, 2019. A panel of judges, including instructors and retreat participants, will consider the following points in the applications/nominations: NEED (financial, social, personal), REASON(S) FOR WANTING TO AT-TEND RETREAT, and POTENTIAL FOR USING SKILLS LEARNED (skill level as related to wish to at-tend retreat, likelihood that the individual will continue quilting, potential to share knowledge gained, likelihood that the nominee/applicant will return to retreat). After evaluation of the applications, the applicants will be contacted. The scholarship recipient(s) will be offered the opportunity to accept the scholarship and pay other fees (meals and lodging). Ap-plicants not receiving the scholarship will be given the choice of completing their registration with registration fees or declining their registration.

MINI-SESSIONS Friday, March 20, 1:00-4:00 p.m.

ATTACHING BORDERS Instructor: Sue Papouschek Level : All Technique: Machine Description: Borders can make or break your quilt appearance. Students will learn how to correctly and accurately attach borders to their quilt. Measuring, cutting, piecing them and attaching borders will all be covered in class. Bring an unfin-ished quilt top(any size) and border fabric. You'll walk out of class with a finished quilt top ready to be quilted next.

FABULOUS FRACTURES Instructor: Ann Kessel Level: All Technique: Machine Materials fee: $5.00 for pattern provided by instructor Description: Fractures, for short, are a way of making images more interesting and more attractive. They provide a look similar to what you would see in a frac-tured mirror or a kaleidoscope. They are easy to make and wonderful to see. They should be in every quilter’s bag of tricks. To make a basic fracture, you will need four exact repeats of a fabric motif, panel or photograph.

FALLING CHARMS

Instructor: Barbara Jones Skill Level: Confident Beginner/Intermediate Technique: Machine Required Description: An easy and quick design with lots of possibilities, the Falling Charms quilt is simple and fun! We’ll precut the patches to speed up construction and explore a variety of color and print choices and settings.

HEXIE GARDEN TABLE RUNNER Instructor: Tresha Cottrill Level: Confident Beginner Technique: Machine Materials Fee: Pattern $9.50 Description: Make a springtime table runner with hexagons that have no set-in seams. The blocks are sewn together in rows like a 9-patch. Learn a special trick for aligning the seams to make per-fect blocks every time. The pattern required for this class is for a quilt but we will be trimming it down to a table runner. You can make the quilt later.

MACHINE COVER/MAT Instructor: Kathy Lanham Level: Beginner

Technique: Machine piecing Materials fee: None Description: Make this basic mat and/or machine cover for yourself or as a gift.

ONE BLOCK WONDER QUILT USING PANELS (PREPARATION FOR WEEKEND CLASS) Instructor: Sheila Maxey Level: Confident Beginner Technique: Preparation for machine sewing Description: In this mini class, we will be preparing the panels for One Block Wonder quilt, which will be taught as a weekend class. We will be layering and pinning your 6 identical panels together so you will create identical stacks of equilateral 60 degree tri-angles. The panel shown here is just an example; you will choose your own panels and bring them to class.

T-SHIRT QUILT TIPS AND TRICKS Instructor: Ginny Guthrie

Level: Beginner Technique: Machine piecing Materials fee: $17.00 Description: Learn proven techniques and unique designs to create an 18” pillow from your own t-shirts. Great for gifts and memory quilts.

WEEKEND WORKSHOPS Fri. March 20, 7:00 p.m.—Sun. March 22, 11:30 a.m.

BUILDING BLOCKS IV: QUARTER SQUARE TRIANGLES Instructor: Barbara Jones Levels: Beginner/-Confident Beginner Technique: Machine Materials fee: None Description: Building on previous Building Blocks courses, this class will continue to discuss fundamental quilting terms, skills and techniques. We will refresh ourselves on proper cutting meth-ods and achieving an accurate ¼” seam, and explore techniques for making quarter square triangle varia-tions. Once students have tested the different methods, they can then decide what they prefer to complete their chosen block/quilt design. Keep in mind that, just as with the Building Blocks I, II and III classes, there is no set pattern or quilt design for this course. A number of block designs will be demonstrated so that students may choose for them-selves how they wish to set their newly minted units. This course is intended to help quilting novices build a basic knowledge base and skill set that will give them confidence in their ability to produce consistently sized and accurately pieced blocks, and consequently, re-duce frustration and add joy to the quiltmaking process. It is the fourth in a planned series of skill-building workshops. Each subsequent class will handle a new tech-nique – suggestions are welcome.

walking foot work is included. Even bring a top and we'll

come up with quilting designs for your special piece. There

are many tips and tricks that are covered to help you have

Using strips and a wedge ruler, Patti will walk you through the planning and the as-sembly to create your one-of-a-kind circular blocks. These are not your traditional Dresden Plate blocks! Transform the look of the block by changing color placement and/or the width of the strips. Make just one variation, or try several different ones. We'll make as many as the weekend allows! Please note that this is a technique class, but ideas for quilts will be covered. You will be required to purchase a wedge Ruler.

STUDIO Instructor: Fran Kordek Levels: All Technique: Appropriate to projects brought to class Materials fee: None Description: This time is intended for those who would appreciate the oppor-tunity to get away, be with other quilters, and have a chance to work on their own project. TRIANGLE HEXIES QUILT Instructor: Tresha Cottrill Level: Confident Beginner Technique: Machine Materials Fee: None Description: This beautiful hexagon quilt is pieced with no “Y” seams. The hexagons are pieced from triangles and assembled into rows for easy
