THE BEATIFICATION OF FR. STANLEY ROTHER
The word beatify means to declare a person blessed, as in the familiar song Blessed Are They. It is an honor bestowed by the highest authority in the church on individuals who strove to live as one of God’s Holy Ones. Fr. Rother has been deemed to be worthy of this honor because he suffered a martyrs death. He served the descendants of Mayan people in the lakeside village of Santiago, Guatemala as a humble and good shepherd. When violent guerillas began to kill some of his people, he prudently fled to the US, but only for a short time. He soon realized that the shepherd cannot run but must be faithful in remaining among his flock even should he have to suffer and die. Beatification ceremonies used to be exclusively celebrated by Popes at the Vatican. Pope Francis has instituted a new practice allowing the ceremony to be celebrated by a Cardinal in the diocese in which the Martyr served as a priest. Cardinal Amato, the head of the Congregation for Saints will preside at this Mass. Beatification is a step towards being recognized as a Saint. To qualify for that honor, a true miracle—one carefully investigated—has to occur at the direct and exclusive interecession of Blessed Stanley Rother. We have a “miracle votive candle tree” near the entrance of our sanctuary. Make an offering, light a candle, and ask for a miracle through his intercession. I hope that we have at least 400 parishioners at the Beatification next Saturday morning at 10am at the Cox Convention Center Arena. There is no admission charge and the arena holds about 14,000. There is plenty of parking adjacent to the arena. SEE YOU THERE!!
OUR RESPONSE TO HURRICANE VICTIMS
Our gifts to hurricane victims through Catholic charities USA have amounted to nearly $15,000 to date. With all the additional victims in Florida and the US Virgin Islands, additional gifts are more than justified. Though the amounts have not been finalized, we will likely donate an additional $30,000 from parish funds designated for charity to the victims of both Harvey and Irma. The US protectorate, St. Thomas, was virtually destroyed by a direct hit by Irma. As soon as we can determine how to get funds as directly as possible to the victims, we will do so. May I encourage you to be extra generous in the weeks and months ahead in your sacrificial giving to the parish so that we will have sufficient funds for extraordinary needs like this in the future.

All Christians should pray regularly for all people who suffer from infirmities of every kind. But this list is intended for individuals who are acutely ill or facing surgery until they are back on the mend. Names will ordinarily be removed after 3 weeks, but if the illness persists you can call us and we will keep their names on for an additional three weeks.

LIFE KIDS, EDGE & LIFE TEEN
SUNDAYS FROM 10:15 AM – 11:30 AM
The goal of our Christian formation programs is to help parents who have a sincere desire to raise their children as disciples of Jesus. Our catechists have little more than one hour a week to achieve this objective. But children are in the care of parents for a much greater length of time. We strongly recommend that parents take part in the ALPHA course that continues on Wednesday at 7pm in the Joyce Center. It begins with a meal. Child care is available. If you do so you will begin to feel more confident about being the primary influence on your children’s faith development.
PREPARING FOR BAPTISM CLASS
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 17TH
1 PM IN ROOM 4
We conduct this one session program for members of our parish who are planning to baptize a child for the very first time. First time godparents are also welcome, but participation is optional. There are other expectations of parents who are going to promise to raise their child in the faith of the Church. Following this class, parents must contact Father Jack to see if there may be any special circumstances in scheduling the actual baptism--at least 30 days before the date you are requesting. Child care is available upon request.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 23rd AT 10AM
This will be an occasion of great splendor for the Catholic Church in Oklahoma. Cardinals, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, Consecrated Religious, and lay faithful will be gathered to honor Fr. Rother as he is formally declared Blessed. Beatification is the rite that leads to canonization—once a verifiable miracle has occurred through his direct intercession.
