LIVING AS STEWARDS In the First Reading from the Book of Exodus, God speaks to Moses. In the midst of revealing to Moses what the Israelites have done and how they have violated His trust in them, the Lord says, “I see how stiff-necked this people is.” As is often the case in Holy Scripture, the term “stiff-necked” has a basis in agriculture, and one with which we may not be familiar. Farmers at that time used the term “stiff-necked” to describe an ox or horse which did not respond to directions. When an animal like that would not move and resisted direction, the animal tended to stiffen and freeze, thus the term “stiff-necked” for one who is stubborn and uncoop-erative. God may consider us to be stiff-necked at times, might He not? In spite of the Lord’s appeals to us to trust Him and to follow Him, we sometimes stiffen and resist. Usually we do that because following the Lord may prove uncomfortable for us. God’s terms for us and His expectations of us may sometimes seem unreasonable and even impossible. Yet, that is the challenge of living stewardship as a way of life. It is not always easy, and it may put us in positions where we feel uncomfortable and even vulnerable. Moses pleads the case for his people to God and the Lord responds to Moses’ plea, his prayer, and Scripture tells us “So the Lord relented in the punishment.” We do need to trust the Lord, and we do need to pray to Him, as He will respond with love and mercy. FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima, Being away on vacation is a good thing. You get to take break from the routine. It may take me a few days to get used to waking up later and without an alarm clock. The days low differently and it’s more relaxing. Yet, there is something to be said about routine as well.

When I’m in a routine, I seemed to be more productive. Having a schedule of sorts keeps me on target and moving forward. Jesus seemed to operate on a routine. In Luke 4:38-44, we ind His routine. In the morning He’s at the synagogue, praying and preaching to start His day. He has an appoint-ment with Simon Peter and his mother in law who is ill. She begins to wait on them after she is cured, so it was probably lunch. There seems to be some down time after lunch, most likely chatting with the Apostles. In the evening we ind Him at another home. They would have served din-ner, then healing and curing people for the rest of the evening. At the end He goes off to a deserted place to pray. We see this routine several times in Scripture.

Not that much different than our days. We get up and have things to do and places to be. One thing Jesus always does is He begins and ends with prayer. This should be a part of our routine as well. Our spiritual side is as equally important as our physical side. Maybe you could catch an extra Mass on the way to or from work or after dropping the kids off at school. Maybe a short visit in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel - it’s open 24 hours a day during the week. If we wish to be more holy and more like Jesus, then having prayer in our daily routine is essential.

Work of Our Hands

Prayer Shawl Ministry September 15, 9am - 10am / McGowan Hall

Join others, regardless of skill level to knit, crochet or sew. Together we can create beautiful prayer shawls for those who need to feel the love of Christ wrapped around them. At our meetings, we share the stories of the people who have received shawls, and discuss successes and challenges with our current projects. Enjoy some refreshments as we support and rejoice with one another in our journey. For information about how to get involved in the Prayer Shawl Ministry, or if you know someone who would be comforted by receiving a shawl immersed in prayers of healing and comfort, please contact Amber Loyer at [email protected].
