24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 13, 2020

I may sound like a broken record at the end of Sunday Mass when I say: It is such a joy to celebrate Mass in the parking lot together with this great group of Ministers of Hospitality. It isn't a ministry mentioned in the bulletin. You can call it a pop-up-ministry. It just happened through COVID that we had to invite parishioners to do what was needed to celebrate the "source and summit" of our Catholic life: the Sunday Mass. Members of several esta-blished ministries –ushers, lectors, EM's, etc.– are forming now a new group for the sake of the whole parish. But there is another pivotal activity in our parish that needs the united efforts of our members: serving the poor. Now we are in the seventh month of COVID, a growing

need for basic necessities is showing, across our city. Food banks are appearing everywhere. Because there is such a need for food, that it is not enough. Can you imagine this, in the entertainment capital of the world? That is why a group of our parishioners stuck their heads together to bring this service to Saint Mark. In collaboration with the organization "Nourish LA" we will start a weekly food-distribution service straight from our rectory garage. It will be a year-round version of our Loaves and Fishes program. Again, I am making an appeal to all our parish ministry groups. Again, I am asking to consider participating in a parish activity that binds us together in our Catholic faith. Something we can work out even under the recent COVID restrictions. Most of the activities will take place outside, or in an open garage, wearing face-masks and with social distancing. Facing such a great need around us, we'd like to start rather sooner than later. In the coming week, all ministry leaders will receive in invitation from me to promote this among their groups. We will then create online sign-ups for the various tasks involved: food pick-up, sorting, storing, administration, assembly of bags, giving out, regulating traffic, placing signage, advertising, etc. Please come out and donate your time generously and help to establish this service for the sake of our brothers and sisters in need. But there are other, material things, needed as well: Shelving, refrigeration, tables. A GoFundMe page will be launched where you can financially support this ministry. Yes, COVID has placed us for many difficulties. And it isn't over yet. But by accep-ting change in the way we are used to do things, the Church has more than once been able to re-establish itself. As long as we stay true to the core of our faith.

Al final de la Misa Dominical puedo sonar como un disco roto cuando digo: Es una alegría celebrar la Misa en el estacionamiento junto con este gran grupo de Ministros de Hospitalidad. No es un ministerio mencionado en el boletín. Pueden llamarlo un ministerio emergente. Sucedió a través de COVID que tuvimos que invitar a los feligreses a hacer lo necesario para celebrar la "fuente y cumbre" de nuestra vida católica: la Misa Dominical. Los miembros de varios ministerios establecidos -acomodadores, lectores, EM, etc.- están formando ahora un nuevo grupo por el bien de toda la parroquia. Pero hay otra actividad fundamental en nuestra parroquia que necesita los esfuerzos unidos de nuestros miembros: servir a los pobres. Ahora estamos en el séptimo mes de COVID, una creciente necesidad de las necesidades básicas se está mostrando, en toda nuestra ciudad. Los bancos de alimentos están apareciendo por todas partes. Porque hay tal necesidad de comida, que no es suficiente. ¿Se imaginan en la capital del entretenimiento del mundo? Es por eso que un grupo de nuestros feligreses se unieron para traer este servicio a San Marcos. En colaboración con la organización "Nourish LA" iniciaremos un servicio semanal de distribución de alimentos directamente desde nuestro garaje de la rectoría. Será una versión durante todo el año de nuestro programa de Panes y Peces. Una vez más, hago un llamado a todos nuestros grupos del ministerio parroquial. Una vez más, pido que consideremos participar en una actividad parroquial que nos une en nuestra fe católica. Algo que podemos resolver incluso bajo las recientes restricciones COVID. La mayoría de las actividades se llevarán a cabo afuera, o en un garaje abierto, con máscaras faciales y con distanciamiento social. Frente a una gran necesidad a nuestro alrededor, nos gustaría empezar lo más pronto posible. En la próxima semana, todos los líderes d los ministerios recibirán una invitación mía para promover esto entre sus grupos. A continuación, crearemos inscripciones online para las diversas tareas que conlleva: recogida de alimentos, clasificación, almacenamiento, administración, montaje de bolsas, distribución, regulación del tráfico, colocación de señalización, publicidad, etc. Por favor, salgan y donen su tiempo generosamente y ayuden a establecer este servicio por el bien de nuestros hermanos y hermanas necesitados. Pero al aceptar el cambio en la forma en que estamos acostumbrados a hacer las cosas, la Iglesia ha sido capaz de restablecerse más de una vez. ST. MARK DRIVE-IN MASS INSTRUCTIONS

General guidelines:Please remain in your vehicle for the duration of your stay at St. Mark.

You may only leave your vehicle to use the restroom or in case of emergency. Currently, the only restroom available for use is the handicap restroom. Children will not be allowed to go to the restroom unaccompanied by an adult.

Collection: Please enclose your offering in an envelope, preferably in the form of a check made out to St. Mark Church. Consider giving online at www.st-mark.net or using Text to Give, text your donation amount to the number (424) 370-1756 on your cell phone. The collection will be picked up by our ministers of hospitality at the normal time of the offertory hymn. They will approach each car wearing face masks and gloves and they will pick up your offering from the driver side only.

Communion: By lowering your car window(s), you are indicating that you would like to receive communion. The Priest and Eucharistic Minister, wearing a face mask, will come to each vehicle on both sides to distribute Holy Communion. In order to receive communion, you must have your face mask on. Additionally, we encourage you to sanitize your hands before the priest and eucharistic minister arrive at your vehicle. Communion will only be given on the hand, and to maintain social distancing, we ask that you stretch your arm out your window. Passing the Host to another passenger is not permitted. If you are wearing gloves, you must remove one to receive the Precious Host.

Departure: Departure from the parking lot will begin following the end of mass. The gates will remain closed until then. Follow the instructions of our ministers of hospitality who will direct you to exit through the Coeur D’ Alene Ave. gate or through the Garfield Ave. gate.

Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt. At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.’ Moved with compassion the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan. When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount. He seized him and started to choke him, demanding, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ But he refused. Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison until he paid back the debt. Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master and reported the whole affair. His master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to. Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?’ Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt. So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.”

Entonces Jesús les dijo: “El Reino de los cielos es semejante a un rey que quiso ajustar cuentas con sus servidores. El primero que le presentaron le debía muchos talentos. Como no tenía con qué pagar, el señor mandó que lo vendieran a él, a su mujer, a sus hijos y todas sus posesiones, para saldar la deuda. El servidor, arrojándose a sus pies, le suplicaba, diciendo: ‘Ten paciencia conmigo y te lo pagaré todo’. El rey tuvo lástima de aquel servidor, lo soltó y hasta le perdonó la deuda. Pero, apenas había salido aquel servidor, se encontró con uno de sus compañeros, que le debía poco dinero. Entonces lo agarró por el cuello y casi lo estrangulaba, mientras le decía: ‘Págame lo que me debes’. El compañero se le arrodilló y le rogaba: ‘Ten paciencia conmigo y te lo pagaré todo’. Pero el otro no quiso escucharlo, sino que fue y lo metió en la cárcel hasta que le pagara la deuda. Al ver lo ocurrido, sus compañeros se llenaron de indignación y fueron a contar al rey lo sucedido. Entonces el señor lo llamó y le dijo: ‘Siervo malvado. Te perdoné toda aquella deuda porque me lo suplicaste. ¿No debías tú también haber tenido compasión de tu compañero, como yo tuve compasión de ti?’ Y el señor, encolerizado, lo entregó a los verdugos para que no lo soltaran hasta que pagara lo que debía. Pues lo mismo hará mi Padre celestial con ustedes, si cada cual no perdona de corazón a su hermano’’.

Please load your items in your trunk and follow the appropriate guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19 when you arrive at St. Mark. Simply stay in your car and a SVdP member will unload your items from your trunk or the back of your car.
