    Folk art is an art form

    based on old traditions

    that have developed

    from the practicalnecessities of country

    life.

    Farmers would decorate

    their various utensils andwomen would weave

    material for their clothing

    and for decoration.

    WEAVING TRADITIONS Lithuania has a long

    weaving tradition.

    The earliest Lithuanian

    textile fragments foundin the burial groundsdate back to thesecond-third century.

    It was found that mostof them are wovenfrom local rawmaterials - wool andlinen yarns.

    LITHUANIAN FOLK FABRIC

    The first millennium featuredmainly woven plain, flat(initial) woven fabrics.

    Until the nineteenth century,yarn for weaving was painted

    in natural colors: plant blossoms,

    leaves, roots, moss,tree

    bark, marsh and iron

    rust.

    Aniline dyes, introduced inthe nineteenth-century, haveenriched and intensified thecolors of the fabric.

    Linen is one of the

    oldest textiles sorts in

    the world which is

    produced from linenfiber. Even 5000 years

    B.C. linen garments

    were worn in

    Egypt.

    to make linen. Flax is a temperamental

    plant to grow, and the quality of thefinished product depends largely on the

    quality of the plant itself

    NATIONAL SASHES Frequently mentioned in folk

    songs and legends and frequentlygiven as a gift, thejuos ta(sash) isthe prototype Lithuanian wovenarticle and comes in a variety ofwidths and lengths.

    Juos toshave been used, amongothers things, as bookmarks,neckties, accent pieces, and alsowidened into table runners.

    National sashes are a traditionaland ancient branch of Lithuanianfolk art that lately has beenreviving.

    At present hand-woven sashes,especially those that reveal thetaste of the Lithuanian people forcoloration took a new start.

    Clothing always reflects theeconomic situation.

    Woven and embroidered,

    these costumes reflectregional tastes, traditionsand motifs and arecherished family heirlooms.

    KNITWEAR Some twentieth-century knitting

    also feature medieval-styleLithuanian motifs such ascastles and knights.

    Although these are quiteinteresting and beautiful pieces

    of handicraft, they are nottraditional folk art designs andmay even have been workedfrom printed pattern

    Knit articles are a beautifuland lovely decoration of the

    ancient Lithuanian interiorand clothing. Folk' masters upto now use the techniques ofhand weaving, knitting andcrocheting.
