Nora Fingscheidt was born in Braunschweig in 1983 and spent her childhood in Germany and Argentina. From 2003 onwards she supported the development of the self-organized film school filmArche in Berlin. At the same time, she completed her training as an acting coach with Sigrid Andersson. 2008 – 2017 Nora studied fiction directing at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg. Her graduation film, the full-length documentary Without This World about a conservative Mennonite colony in Argentina, won the Max Ophüls Prize and First Steps Award in 2017. Her fiction debut System Crasher has already won several awards at script level. It also won the Work in Progress section at Les Arcs Film Festival.
THE DIRECTOR DIRECTOR’S NOTE
My motivation for making this film was to sensitize people to children like Benni. That’s why the film is being told primarily from Benni’s point of view. As spectators we develop a feeling for the confusing number of “homes”, the changing guardians and the constant and dizzying disruption of relationships. At the same time, Benni draws us into the wild, uncertain, fantasy-filled world of a child fighting for her own sense of being. I wanted the film to bubble with energy and, despite the tragic nature of the topic, to be humorous and lighthearted. Just like Benni is. Although we may be upset – even shocked – by Benni’s violent behavior, we should learn to love her and to fear for her during the course of the film. Ever since I met my first “system crasher”, I’ve known that I had to tell a story about one. Children’s violence is a cry for help. Always.

She is small, but dangerous. Wherever Benni ends up, she is immediately expelled. The wild 9-year-old girl has already become what child protection services call a “system crasher”. And she is certainly not looking to change her ways. Because Benni has one single goal: to be back at home with her mommy! But Bianca is scared of her own daughter. Mrs. Bafané from child protection services is trying her best to find a permanent placement for Benni. She hires the anger management trainer Micha as Benni’s school escort and suddenly there is a seed of hope. Will Micha be able to succeed where all others despaired?
While being acutely authentic, first-time director Nora Fingscheidt transcends a psychological study and crafts vibrant, visceral and emotional cinema, which evokes unforgettable performances.

ALL MY LOVING
PA N O R A M A
All My Loving is not a loud film. It isn’t a radical drama or a story that aims to shock. It is a film about people from our midst, a film that tries to find some levity in the melancholic and on the flip side searches for the radicality in everyday life. It is a film which quietly follows our heroes until they dare to face the future. We all feel that way. We doubt. We have to decide. We can’t make up our minds. Perhaps we shy away from the unknown, but every decision is an opportunity, the beginning of a different life. And in the end we can hopefully look back on something that has made us happy. But who knows. All My Loving is a story about the small changes in our lives. I have grown up with the American independent cinema, Ang Lee, Todd Solondz, Lisa Cholodenko and films like The Ice Storm, Happiness and The Kids Are All Right. Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere that builds a world from atmosphere, the work of Noah Baumbach, who makes one film after another about our lives, or that of Nanni Moretti in Europe, those are my influences. The “comédie humaine” that aims to capture a portrait of our times and generation. That’s the film I wanted to make.

While visiting a PoW camp near Manchester at the end of WWII, Margaret and her father, the manager of the local football team, notice a young German soldier Bert Trautmann. Margaret’s father is so taken by Bert’s prowess as a goal-keeper that he gets him out of the camp to play for his team. While Margaret’s and Bert’s love slowly blossoms despite local hostility, Bert’s heroics in goal are noticed by Man City. Rather than going back to Germany, Bert marries Margaret and signs for Man City. His signing causes outrage to thousands of fans, many of them Jewish. But Bert and Margaret receive support from an unexpected direction: Rabbi Alexander Altmann, who fled the Nazis. Thus Bert’s path to acceptance begins. At the 1956 FA Cup Final he achieves ultimate reconciliation, when he secures victory by playing on despite breaking his neck. Yet fate twists the knife for both Margaret and Bert and their loyalty to each other will be put to the test once more.

Against many odds, Bertolt Brecht’s “The Threepenny Opera” becomes a phenomenal success. The film industry picks up the scent and seeks to make the master direct a film version of his “play with music”. Brecht though refuses to play by their rules. While the studio wants to censor the “filth” and tuck at the heart strings to cash in on the success, the author wants to make nothing less than a completely new kind of film. A socialist critique on capitalism, staged as a conflict between Mack the Knife, a London gangster, and Peachum, the head of the beggars’ mafia. And Brecht does not bow down; he takes the producers to court in order to prove that the moneyed interests are prevailing over his right as an author – and the right of the audience! Provocative, outrageously colorful and merging fact with the fictional and the visionary, Brecht’s “true” Threepenny Film comes to life before the author’s eyes. A film that was never made. An artist who challenges the industry and audience alike. A poet directing reality. That has never happened before!

Summer is finally here! The Immenhof sisters Lou, Charly, and Emmie are looking forward to a relaxed time with their horses. There’s just one catch – Immenhof is bankrupt. What’s more the girls are under constant attack from the mean owner of their neighboring stud farm and his arrogant horse trainer Runa. Runa is having trouble to control Cagliostro, the new star racehorse, and she accuses Lou of being responsible for the horse’s difficult behavior. Lou only sees one way out: she agrees to a risky deal, in which she not only puts her favorite mare Holly on the line, but also risks the future of their entire stables.

One night – seemingly just like any other. Two police officers find the body of the well-known drug addict Lazar near railroad tracks in Sofia. That is how the night on November 9th, 2019 begins – thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the regime change in Bulgaria. Through a kaleidoscope of intertwining stories, we follow three teams of police officers, patrolling the streets of Sofia and doing their job the way they believe is right, while facing the challenges posed by the current Bulgarian reality. A story about lives saved and lives lost, about survival and failure, about the goodness that never goes unpunished and the dignity we are trying to preserve. A few hours in the life of a society that is losing its purpose, in search of the result of three decades of transition. Stories – equal parts sad and amusing, just like our way of life.

Robert, a 91 year old, cranky pensioner, lives on a small allotment in Vienna. His dog died during the night and he wants to dig a hole behind his cabin to bury him. But failing to dig it himself he begrudgingly hires a young man from Afghanistan, Adib. While the two struggle to trust each other, Adib finds ways to pacify and appease the angry old man. Robert finds out that Adib has a wound on his foot, which seems rather badly covered up, but Adib pretends that all is well. When the work is done, Robert seems relieved to have the foreigner out of his back yard. Yet a little while later, when Robert finds Adib unconscious at the bus stop, he knows he will need to help the young man. When Adib regains consciousness, he refuses to go to hospital out of fear to be deported. Robert decides to take matters into his own hands to save this young man and the two spend a night together that is so full of chance, will-power, and inner revelation, that it sometimes appears hard to believe that these two found each other.

Suppose you found, to your complete surprise, that your own father was one of those people. That is what happens to Anna in 1933. Anna is not sure who Hitler is. She is nine years old when everything begins, too busy to take much notice of his face on posters all over Berlin. But when her own father goes missing one day, she comes to realize that the man on the posters is about to change the whole of Europe – starting with her own small life. She is forced to uproot her entire existence. Anna and her family hastily flee Germany, leaving even her favourite stuffed pink rabbit behind. From now on Anna encounters life in exile, not speaking the language, not knowing customs and manners, missing her friends and loved ones. To find a school for Anna is difficult, money is getting very short and they are fearful as they also encounter xenophobia. Yet Anna grows up, finds new friends, and learns to take responsibility. So when her family has to move away yet again, she is certain she can do anything.
