Cardiff Cycleways Consultation CW4.1: Bute Park to Western Avenue Cardiff Council are developing proposals for five Cycleways as an exemplar for all ages and abilities cycling, to connect communities to major destinations across the city, including the City Centre and Cardiff Bay.

Cycleways will provide continuous routes that are intuitive and comfortable to use and segregated from motor vehicles and pedestrians where needed.

Cycleway 4: City Centre to North West Cardiff Cycleway 4 will provide a route from the city centre to North West Cardiff. The route will adjoin a cycle way on Castle Street – CW2 – due to start construction later this year as part of clean air plans. Destinations served by Cycleway 4 will include

• City Centre• Bute Park• Sophia Gardens• National Express coach station• Sports Wales National Centre• Sophia Gardens Cricket Ground• Cardiff Riding School• Cardiff Metropolitan University• Llandaff Village• Danescourt Rail Station• Plas Dŵr Development

The route has been designed to avoid the need for loss of trees.

Lighting will need to be installed along certain stretches to ensure user safety and use throughout winter months. Assessment of different lighting technology is being considered. Any solution will be subject to full ecological surveys.

Cycleway 4 Phase 1: Bute Park to Western Avenue The first phase of Cycleway 4 will improve cycle facilities through Sophia Gardens and Llandaff Fields to Western Avenue. A summary of scheme proposals is set out below.

Sophia Gardens car park/National Express coach station area Potential link to National Express coach station Pedestrian link to Sophia Gardens car park

Sophia Close roundabout Parallel cycle/zebra crossing on existing road.

Access to Welsh Ins�tute of Sport via zebra crossing over carriageway and cycleway. Car park one way system to be reversed to reduce conflict. Shared use link to Taff Trail to be widened to 4m. West of roundabout, cycleway joins exis�ng carriageway.

Sophia Close roundabout to Cardiff Riding School Cycleway runs on the exis�ng road.

Cardiff Riding School to Western Avenue Cycleway moves off road to avoid increased motor traffic at Cardiff Riding School. Cycleway joins exis�ng shared use path on Western Avenue.
