News Around Texas

Austin, Texas – September 9, 2009 - Surveying And Mapping, Inc. (SAM, Inc.), a provider of custom surveying and mapping services, today an-nounced that it has added Optech’s LYNX Mobile Mapping solution to its broad inventory of state-of-the-art surveying and mapping technologies.

The non-invasive, state-of-the-art LYNX Mobile Mapping solution is ideal for civil engineering firms or government agencies managing rail, trans-portation, pipeline, waterway, electric transmission lines and design-build projects. It incorporates the most advanced ground-based LiDAR (Lighting and Detection and Ranging) sensors, digital cameras and a GPS navigation system to quickly and accurately collect survey-quality point data for cor-ridor projects throughout the U.S.

Additional benefits of the LYNX Mobile Mapping solution include: • Cost-savings: This advanced mapping technology can gather all required data point measurements in one setting, eliminating the need for additional mobilization costs. • Time-savings: The LYNX Mobile Mapping solution gives SAM, Inc. the ability to collect up to 400,000 points per second, compared to one point every few seconds with traditional survey technologies. • Enhanced accuracy: The LYNX Mobile Mapping solution provides de-signers with a more “complete” picture of the project – with highly-accurate point density measurements and the ability to locate features that are inac-cessible with current technology. • Increased Safety: The LYNX Mobile Mapping solution also provides in-creased safety for project personnel and the general public because data can be collected remotely, day or night, removing the need for traffic diversion

News Around Texas

DALLAS, TX – October 12, 2009 - GeoShack announces Topcon Positioning System's (TPS) new GRS-1, the world's first fully integrated dual-constellation, network-enabled RTK rover system. It is an all-in-one handheld GNSS receiver and field controller with high-speed processor, increased memory, built-in camera, compass and bar code reading function.

David Owen, Vice President said, “Integrated into the new GRS-1 system are SD memory card slot, optional internal GSM or CDMA modem, and wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi and Blu-etooth technology.

The GRS-1 (Geodetic Rover System) was designed with two primary system design goals: Smaller size and weight, and lower-than-expected cost. According to Owen, “The GRS-1 "packs all the power of a full GPS + GLONASS dual-frequency receiver, cellular modem and Windows PC into a very small, very powerful package."

Designed primarily as a GPS network rover receiver, the GRS-1 "provides a small, lightweight rover and a price to fit any budget," he said. "The new receiver has DGPS capability with internal L1 antenna for GIS and navigation, add the PGA-1 external antenna and connect to your local GNSS network via the internal modem, and instantly move to dual frequency, dual constellation GNSS centimeter RTK accuracy. The GRS-1 can also be used as a static post processed receiver system."

The GRS-1 uses the Windows Mobile™ 6.1 operating system to run TopSURV, Topcon's popular surveying software. TopSURV 7.2 adds new features and functions that are unique to the GRS-1. The receiver and field controller also has a 3.7 inch, touch screen display and its rugged construction is rated to stand a one meter drop.

Owen said, "With the GRS-1 network rover, no additional modem or equipment is needed . . . it's all built in. The user can access a RTK network for sub meter to sub foot mapping. By attaching an easy-to-connect external antenna, centimeter accuracy is instantly achieved."

between the attendees and Surveyors.

Concluding the field exercise, the group returned to the library to review their collected field notes. It was apparent that the participants had experienced a peek back into history, and gotten a glimpse of the process of how Texas was carved up as the waves of settlers moved in from the United States. They were extremely appreciative for the insight, and they had many questions relating to the equipment and the general survey process. But it was also great for the Surveyors, who came to appreciate such a dedicated and knowledgeable group inter-ested in maps and cartography.

These two societies are bonded by their love of maps and map making, and in just a few short hours, a greater appreciation and understanding of surveying was passed on to a group who now has a better insight as to how these maps were made. Of interest to Surveyors, there is an unbelievably beautiful map collection at the UT-Arlington Library on campus. The Special Collections exhibit there focuses not only upon many of Alexander von Humboldt’s own major publications, but also examines original works by 19th century German authors, cartogra-phers, artists, and printmakers who depicted the American Southwest, Mexico, and Texas for evidence of direct connections with Humboldt and/or his ideas. It is a collection worth a visit to anyone. Contact Dr. Gerald D. Saxon, Dean of the Library, for information (817-272-5318).

Other TSPS members participating in the event included Rusty DiSciullo, Michael Evans, Davey Edwards, Jimmie Nichols, Steve Roan, and Chris Freeman. Thanks to Dan Hampton for bringing these two groups together, and to Bill O’Hara and his staff for sharing their knowledge and the resources of the Texas General Land Office.
