L.J. Otis 253 Redford Crescent, Stratford, ON NsA 1P3 [email protected] 11 June, 2008 Peter; I got the June newsletter. I'm enclosing compensation for mailing costs. I turned 60 this year & applied for early OAS so I can afford pretty much any extravagance. Looks like a couple of my great-grandma's (Ida Alberta (Jones) Johns) relatives ended up in your photo archives. Kind of an interesting family in their own right. They're covered in Brian Tackaberry's 1996 book "James McMasters & Family: To Quinte & Beyond". The automated genealogy site that has previously transcribed the 1901 & 1911Canadian censuses is now working on the 1851/52 census. It isn't complete, & never will be since some of the original census has perished at some time in the past, but I've downloaded some of the Whit(e)lock related entries. As with the later census transcripts, these are only extracts, but each page is linked to an image of the original page, so you can easily access it for more information. The New Brunswick entries can be a little puzzling because they label people born in province as "native" which might suggest to the modern eye that they're aboriginal, but it just means that they're native-born, whereas immigrants have a date of immigration included. In the Ontario (Canada West) extracts, I note with interest that Silas Whitlock & family were still living in the Pickering area in 1852, even though he had emigrated with his family in 1849 and already selected his homestead in UsborIie Tp. There's also members of the Stotts family living in close vicinity. His sister, Harriet, married Dewitt Stotts in Pickering in 1850, so she may have been living with her brother's family prior to that. There's a couple of Whit(e)lock related biographies extracted from the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography that I found online on the Cyndislist site in the New Zealand section. something got lost in transit or whatever, but there hasn't been a response from theOntario Archives in regard to my inter-library loan applications for some time. Maybebudget cutbacks.
