Note on pop songs in student films (unintentionalassociations)

cinematic appropriations of country musicspower to affirm the purity of the American way

Counter example: Nashville (1975)-- Altman valorizesfilms ability to provoke critical scrutiny of patrioticcorruption.

Country Music in Nashville is not about purity. RatherHenry Gibsons character is cashing in on the Bicentennial--celebrating blind faith, and denouncing the long hairs. Itsabout Americas enslavement to commercial interests.

For better or worse, both films show country musicstriumph over the cultural and political upheavals of the60s.

Of the 24 main characters, Opal is the most present--a pompous documentarian from the BBC--unable to seepast her own predjudices, etc--she misses everythingshe sees.

Nashvilles You may say I aint free, but it dont worryme was strangely prophetic: Dont worry, be happy.

In your own films... you could treat the Heartland

ironically, or you could use Hip Hop, urban music...

Music doesnt have one fixed meaning.

Even what a genre of music means depends on how it is

    framed.

You can use music inappropriately and say much...

    Wagner & Vietnam

Apocalypse Now! use ofThe Doors, and Wagner!?

Chion: On-the-Air Sound (p.76) We see the tape player.Screen music (diegetic) vs. Pit music (non-diegetic) (p.80).

Effective technique to move back and forth from Screen toPit music. (Good Night and Good Luck, Taxi Driver, TrumanShow, American Grafitti)

What are the associations? Why not play Peter, Paul andMary?

    Wagner & Vietnamcontinued

Richard Wagner (1813~1883) highest form of Westernculture.

Code for Facism. Beloved by Hitler, wrote anti-semitic

    articles, music banned in Israel.

In Apocalypse Now! Kilgore character is ramming Westernculture down Vietnamese throats (Fascism/Imperialismbelongs to the guys in the helicopters, not to the people on

    the ground.)

    Jarhead & Apocalypse Now!

Jarhead is not so much an anti-war war film (likeApocalypse Now!) but a broader critique of these times(like Nashville.)

Same music, different films: (Mis)reading Apocalypse Now!
