The Process

What we heard:

amphitheatre, accessibility, teaching sites – places for students to learn “hands on”, gathering place for gardeners, grow shows,

demonstrations, indoor/outdoor, nursery center, café/gift shop, kitchen – organic/canning, cooking classes, meditation/yoga, quiet intimate space, island history, culture, astronomy clubs, walking/biking/hiking trails, book store, gifts, plants/nursery, propagation, adult/

children’s classrooms, docent led tours – history, event space areas (revenue), demonstration - composting, tie in with art, cultural community

groups, utilizing partnerships, economic potential for collaboration, guided walks with podcast, iphone app, butterfly house, classrooms, multi-purpose

rooms for community, researchers – higher education scientists, seed bank, botanical staff, beneficial insects, tie in E.P. Foster site, involvement with

other areas in community in restoration, funicular/tram to move from river/beach to park/ alternate transportation, water-shed management,

reclamation, education re: water-wise usage, docent outreach to schools, outreach to entire community, not just city, regional, library

research possibilities, observatory, telescopes and tree houses.

3 Celebrating the Mediterranean Biomes

Regions of Mediterranean-type climate occur roughly between 30° and 40°latitude on the west coasts of continents, where offshore there are cold ocean currents. Each region in which the Mediterranean shrublands and woodlands occur is island-like in character and thus there is frequently a high degree of endemism. Comparative studies of the several regional expressions of this biome reveal interesting examples of convergent evolution in plant families and birds on the different continents.
