1st female Surgical Department Chair at Bayshore Medical Hospital

My favorite quote of Doc's is "cancer has a way of making you get rid of

all the crap in your life!" … It's too bad we often times have

to be reactive instead of proactive in life.

Houston’s Top Ten Leader for “Women on the Move”

It was in the late 80's. I was newly divorced and working 5 part time jobs when the mammogram showed a lump.

I had insurance, so made the arrangements and Dixie took the lump out in day surgery at Bayshore. When the insurance was filed they refused to pay because I didn't stay overnight. Dixie not only didn't charge me, but she talked the hospital into cutting their bill in half. I will be

forever grateful to her for taking the financial stress off at a difficult time in my life.

--Helen, longtime volunteer with The Rose

When in August 2009 the disease we had spent 20 years trying to avoid,

materialized out of nowhere, … it was Dr. Dixie with the shoulder to cry on and

the willingness “to be my friend.”

-- Nell, 25 year friend/patient, contributor to the Dr. Dixie Tribute Fund and living with metastatic breast

cancer

NOWHERE in the world is there another Dr. Dixie Melillo. Her smile and her

genuine caring spirit have given me the strength to continue one more day,

because I wouldn’t want to disappoint “my friend and doctor” who gives SO

much of herself to her patients.

-- Nell, living with metastatic breast cancer

Dr. Dixie Melillo Middle Schoolnamed in her honor

Pasadena ISD

Dr. Dixie educated me on the “Helping High.” Altruism creates a feel-good sensation as well as a

greater sense of self-esteem and well-being. In turn, what is associated with helper’s high is

increased production of endorphins in the brain … In addition to the feeling of bliss that it gives,

endorphins also help in the reduction of pain.

-- Nyla, member of The Rose staff who was recommended to grad school by Dr. Dixie

Dixie is amazing, one of a kind, selfless, humble, generous, and so much more. She has achieved so much, helped thousands, changed lives and moved mountains to get to where she is today, all while never asking for anything in return or

expecting recognition. She is a pioneer in women’s breast healthcare and we are all

better people for knowing her!

-- Michelle, patient and friend

Dr. Dixie is very compassionate and makes patients feel like they are her family member, or

a close friend and she gives you a hug you will not forget.

I love that her hugs are just for you and it makes

you feel special.-- Sally, Patient Navigator at The Rose
