Chairman’s Pen
My dear fellow exporters,
Apart from the progressive foreign trade policy measures that have been announced, some steps must be taken to soften the interest rate regime for the exportingcommunity. While various kinds of windows are being opened up or expanded likethose for investments in government securities and for ECBs, it is also important tolower the export credit in foreign currency so that our exporters have a level playingfield. I refer, in particular, to the case of Export Credit in Foreign Currency, whereinthe interest rate was earlier fixed at Libor plus 350 points. The RBI has now with effectfrom May 5th deregulated the interest rate as a result banks are charging at Liborplus 400 basis points, at the minimum. The international rates are much lower andeven ECB is available in India at Libor plus 200 basis points. Accordingly, I feel thatthere should be an upper cap to interest rates on Export Credit in Foreign Currencyand the rate should be reduced to Libor plus 200 basis points.
Yours sincerely,
(AMAN CHADHA)
