    Desertification affects over one-fourth Geographical Area of India: Report:A report submitted to the

    United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification by the Environment Ministry in fourth week of April2013 described that one fourth of Indias geographical area is undergoing the process of desertificationdespite of the efforts made by it to combat the problem. India has a total geographical area of 328 millionhectares and the problem of land degradation and drought continues in the country. As per the findings of thereport submitted to United Nation, desertification, land degradation and drought has hit about 8 lakh squarekilometer of Indian Territory and covers almost all states and union territories of the country. The total area ofIndia that is undergoing the process of degradation is about 105.48 million hectares that constitutes of about32.07 percent of total land area of India. The basic reason for such a major challenge lies in the area of landuse planning, management of waste and degraded land and efficient use of water resources.

    Takehiko Nakao elected as the President Asian Development Bank Board : Takehiko Nakao wasappointed as the President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) by the Board of Governors at New Delhi.His appointment to the post was unanimously accepted ahead of the annual meet of the bank. He succeededHaruhiko Kuroda, who resigned from his office in March 2013 to take up an assignment as the Governor of

    the Bank of Japan. The 57 years old Nakao is the former Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs ofJapan. He will be the ninth President and will assume the charge of his office on 28 April 2013. He isappointed to complete the unexpired term of his predecessor that is supposed to end in November 2016.

    29th April India-Saudi Arabia joint group to mitigate nitaqat fallout:A India-Saudi Arabia joint working group has

    been formed that will work toward minimising the fallout of the Kingdoms Nitaqat policy on Indians. Headedby Saudi Arabias Deputy Minister for Labour Affairs Ahamed Al Humaidan and Deputy Chief of Mission atthe Indian Embassy Sibi George, the group would hunt for solutions such as providing alternative jobs withinSaudi Arabia and making the exit smooth for those who may have to leave the country. A high-leveldelegation led by Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi has met Saudi authorities to discuss the

    mechanisms. The deliberations between Mr. Ravi, who was accompanied by Minister of State for ExternalAffairs E. Ahamed and the Prime Ministers adviser, T.K.A. Nair first with Saudi Labour Minister Adel binMohammad Fakeih and then with Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal resulted in the formation of the jointgroup. Indian workers have been hit by the policy, which reserves a certain percentage of the workforce incommercial establishments for Saudi nationals.

    India may have to continue coal imports even till 2017: Govt: India, which imported 110.42 million tonnesof coal during April-January 2013 may have to bank on imports even till 2017 to meet shortages, thegovernment said. He said the country imported 110.42 MT of coal, mainly from Indonesia, Australia, SouthAfrica and US, between April 2012 and January 2013. The total production of coal in the country during thelast fiscal was 557.5 MT, he said adding coal which is under open general licence can be imported atprevailing international prices by anyone through paying the applicable import duty. Last year, PlanningCommission had said that Indias coal imports are likely to touch a whopping 185 MT by 2017, almost 20 percent of the global trade in the sector amid widening demand-supply deficit. Projecting the imports to touch

    185 MT by 2017 against 137 MT by the end of the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12), the Commission had saidthere is an urgent need to take effective measures to step up coal production.

    India's GDP likely to improve to 5.7% in 2013: IMF: Indicating that India's declining growth has bottomedout, International Monetary Fund (IMF) said the country's GDP is likely to improve to 5.7 per cent in 2013and further to 6.2 per cent a year after. For Asia as a whole the economic growth is likely to be 5.7 per centthis calendar and 6 per cent in 2013, IMF said in its 'Regional Economic Outlook: Asia and Pacific' report. Asper IMF's projections, India's real economic growth was 11.2 per cent in 2010, 7.7 per cent in 2011 and 4 percent in the last calendar.

    Union Government set up Committee to Enhance MSME Exports: The Union government keeping intoconsideration the widening trade gap, had set up a six-member inter-ministerial committee in third week ofApril 2013 under the chairmanship of Finance Secretary R S Gujral to suggest measures for enhancingMSME exports.     Current account deficit likely to improve to 3.9% of GDP in FY'14: Report: India's current accountdeficit(CAD) is likely to witness a "gradual" improvement in the next two to three years and it is expected tocome down to 3.9 per cent of the GDP this fiscal, says a Barclaysreport. CAD of a country represents thedifference between inflows and outflowsof foreign currency. According to Barclays, India's CAD reached arecord 4.9 per cent of GDP in FY2012-13 (about USD 90 billion) and on a conservative basis, it is likely toimprove to 3.9 per cent of GDP (about USD 80 billion) in FY2013-14.

    India, Saudi Arabia set up joint group to resolve labour issues: India and Saudi Arabiahave agreed toset up a joint working group to address "all immediate problems" facing the Indian community including

    issues related to overstaying Indian workers and the Kingdom's new labour policy. The two sides agreed thatthe first meeting of this joint group will be held on May 1, a statement released by the Indian embassy inRiyadh said. The 'Nitaqat' law makes it mandatory for local companies to hire one Saudi national for every 10migrant workers. There has been widespread perception that the new policy will lead to denial of jobopportunities for a large number of Indians working there. Over two million Indians are currently working inSaudi Arabia. The Saudi government was implementing the Nitaqat law to cutunemployment in the country.Earlier India had said that new Saudi labour policy will affect only illegal immigrants and not genuine workersemployed in the Kingdom.

    European Space Telescope Herschel completed its Journey in Space: The Herschel observatory, aEuropean space telescope for which NASA helped build instruments and process data, stopped makingobservations after running out of liquid coolant as expected. Herschel launched aboard an Ariane 5 rocketfrom French Guiana in May 2009. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., built componentsfor two of Herschel's three science instruments. NASA also supports the U.S. astronomical communitythrough the agency's Herschel Science Center, located at the California Institute of Technology's InfraredProcessing and Analysis Center in Pasadena.

The grant of $ 100,000 (Rs. 53.7 lakhs) per project is to help these social enterprises expand inthe States of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. The awards were given by World Bankscountry director Onno Ruhl and Programme Lead (Development Marketplace) Drew von Glahn, at the 2013India Development Marketplace held at the Indian Institute of Forest Management. The winners includesuccessful social sector endeavours like Operation ASHA, which uses technology and a network of health
