2019’s Poetry Festival is set to be our busiest yet, with cross discipline collaborations, LGBTQIA & BAME writing workshops, new and exciting venues on board, and of course, a gaggle of must-see performers raising the roof for ten full days. We also welcome our new Creative Director, Georgina Wilding, to the team, who has been busy booking acts and working behind the scenes to foster new creative opportunity in our Notts stomping ground.

We are delighted to bring you this festival for it’s fourth instalment, and honoured to be supporting so many incredible locally organized acts. Plus, we’ve expanded our technological horizons this year to bring you some Augmented Reality poetry in collaboration with City Arts and Castle

Rock Brewery. Look out for the poetry festival beermats, and in fact, to the back of this brochure to learn more.

As you read on through the events listed here, we hope you’ll agree that once again, we’re in for a treat!

To stay up to date, be sure to follow@nottmpoetryfestival on Twitter and Instagram, and Nottingham Poetry Festival on Facebook where we’ll post digital ticket links and info pages on all the local events.

Waterstones and NPF Present Lorraine Mariner, supported by Leanne Moden & Chris LanyonJoin us in the Sillitoe room to welcome a remarkable poet to our stage as part of the Nottingham Poetry Festival – Lorraine Mariner! Lorraine Mariner grew up in Upminster and attended Huddersfield University, where she read English, before going on to study Library and Information Studies at University College London. Her collection, Furniture was published by Picador in 2009 and shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and the Seamus Heaney Centre Poetry Prize.

Her readings are casual, quiet, funny, offbeat, and almost deadpan; but to call her poems merely ‘quirky’ would be to do them a disservice. Her work is too aware of the bleakness of its backdrops, the odds stacked against the small, humane occurrences of life, which makes their determined preserving of those occurrences an all-the-more remarkable achievement. SATURDAY 4 MAY

Waterstones and NPF present…Patience Agbabi, supported by Ben Norris and Chris McloughlinJoin us in the Sillitoe room for an afternoon of incredible poetry, as we have the great privilege to present Patience Agbabi as part of the Nottingham Poetry Festival!Patience Agbabi is a poet much celebrated for paying equal homage to literature and performance. Born in London to Nigerian parents and fostered in a white English family in North Wales, her work moves fluidly and nimbly between cultures, dialects, voices; between page and stage. After reading English at Pembroke College, Oxford, she completed an MA in Creative Writing at Sussex University. A self-proclaimed ‘poetical activist’, Agbabi says she wrote her first largely autobiographical book, R.A.W., to right the wrongs of the world. Steeped in the plights of Thatcherite Britain, frenetic, furious and formally adventurous, the book won the 1997 Excelle literary award. Her work is musical in every sense, attuned as much to the punning and political immediacy of

the rhythms of rap and dub, as it is to traditional forms like the sonnet, sestina and Chaucer’s rime royal.Waterstones, 1-5 Bridlesmith Gate, Nottingham NG1 2GR3pm – 5pm £9

NPF & NTU Curated and CreatedPresent: Linton Kwesi Johnson,Jamie Thrasivoulou and Bridie SquiresThe first black poet to be published in Penguin Modern Classics, Linton Kwesi Johnson’s work has always been political, vital and necessary, drawing attention to topics like systemic racism, police abuse and National Front attacks, calling for government, institutions and society to be held to account. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE LIBRARIES TOUR

LIBRARY EVENTS

As part of this year’s festival, thanks to Arts Council England and our other supporters, we’re delighted to have two of the nation’s most loved children’s poets touring the Nottingham’s libraries; Val Bloom MBE and Paul Cookson.

Multi award-winning author, Val Bloom MBE had made a significant contribution to poetry during her career. The author has several volumes of poetry for adults and children; picture books; pre-teen and teenage novels and stories; and has edited a number of collections of children’s poetry. She has also written articles for teaching periodicals, plus for national publications including The Guardian

and The Independent, whilst also presenting poetry programmes for radio.

Paul Cookson has visited thousands of schools, performing to hundreds of thousands of pupils and staff. His performances leave long standing impressions; his poem, Let no-one steal your dreams, has been adopted by numerous schools as their mission statement.

The two poets will visit libraries in Clifton, Retford, Bulwell, Eastwood, Sherwood, Wollaton, West Bridgford, Bingham, Aspley, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Mansfield, Mansfield Woodhouse, Meadows and Beeston.
