SEASONS FOR GROWTH PROGRAM

Changes and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At North SydneyDemonstration School we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce or related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how tomanage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful educationprogram called Seasons for Growth which will commence in Term 3.

This program is facilitated in small groups (6 students per group is the recommended number)and is based on research which highlights the importance of social support and the need topractise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issuessuch as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem solving, decision-making, effectivecommunication and support networks. This program will be offered to students in Years 1 to 6.

An information session for parents and carers who would like their child/children to participatewill be held on Wednesday 9 June 8:15am in the Open Area. I would strongly encourage youto attend this session to gain insight into the value of the program.

North Sydney Demonstration School is pleased to be able to offer this important program andwe are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to beinvolved. If you require further information please contact Amanda Coroneos through email.

DEBATING in the Ryde District Debating Competition

Our debating teams are doing a great job this year. They are full of ideas and arguments for thetopics and are learning to be very skilled speech writers and speakers as well as learning thedelicate and difficult art of rebuttal. Our two teams have had four debates against Waitara PS,Beaumont Road PS, Gordon East PS and Lindfield East, winning three and losing one by anarrow margin.

Congratulations to Griffin Cant, Molly Hadfield, Mohammed Ghadiri, SaneilSalunke, Maddie Gallagher, Daniel Picard, Angela Smith, Keanu Olesch –Byrne andGreta Parker.

It is a pleasure to watch such fine young minds develop their skills in this area.

“STUMP THE GRUMP”

Welcome “Stumpers” from the Land of Long Service Leave. While my body is relaxing mymind is still as sharp as a tack. Good luck this week.

Last week’s Questions:1. Cricket balls and 3 cricket bats cost $23. If 5 cricket balls and 1 cricket bat cost $20.

How much does 1 cricket ball cost? The difference in the two purchases are 2 bats and 3dollars. This means a bat is 1.50. The price of 5 balls is20 dollars minus 1.50.Then 18.50 divided by 5 is 3.70. $3.70 is your answer.

2. One of your friends is heading north for a holiday and the other friend is headingsouth. (Both are heading towards where each other had left from and using the sameroad). If their destinations are 1029 km apart and one car is travelling at 45km/h andthe other at 53km/h. How many hours before the two cars pass each other?Since the cars are travelling different direction distancetravelled in 1 hour is 98 because 45 plus 53 equals 98.Now1029 divided by 98 equals 10.5.so answer is 10.5 hours.

3. One day a person went to watch the horses racing. Instead of counting the humans andhorses this person counted 74 heads and 196 legs. How many humans and how manyhorses were there?People plus horses equal to 74. m1l plus m2l plus h1l plush2l plus h3lplus h4l equal to 196. counting 1 leg of horseis same as counting heads equals which is 74.74 X 2 plushorses 3rd and 4th leg equals 196. Horses 3rdand 4th leg equals 196 minus 74 X 2 = 196-148 = 48.So thereare 24 horses in total. So there are 74-24 = 50 people. The answers were kindly explained by Archit Mahajan.

This week’s Question:1. A bath tub will empty at a uniform rate in 15 minutes. With the plug in,

it will fill at a uniform rate in 12 minutes. How long will it take to fillwith the plug out and the tap on?

Congratulations to last week’s “ stumpers”: (at the time of publication)Hugo Douglas, June Whitfield, Leah Schirmer, The Evans family (last week), Stephen andBenny Gebhard, Jeffrey, Annie and Zoe Chen, The Pavlovic family (Kosta,Gala,Biljana,Danko), Archit Mahajan and William & Paul Janes.Email your answers to the “Grump”, [email protected]. The person withthe most correct answers throughout the year will receive a Numeracy committee award.2010 Numeracy Committee: Kate Buczko, Belinda Norrie, Jo Penn, Sophie Honeybourne,Julia Salaverri, Ashley Grimmond and Sue Manning.
