Welcome to Dorking FC and The NewDefence, our home ground for the

2015/16 season.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Sale and his team at Horley Town FC for their hospitality and I hope that you enjoy your visit with us today.

This is our second and nal season here at The New Defence, ahead of our exciting move back to our old home in Meadowbank, which will be transformed into our

iconic new home. As we continue our development at Dorking FC the new leader-ship team are very excited about this, their second season. Our vision remains

focused on continuing to rebuild Dorking FC as a respected football club but also as a social enterprise by re-establishing Dorking FC as an iconic club at the heart of its

rural community.

The football management team have worked tirelessly over the summer and I would like to thank them for all their eorts. A big welcome back to our squad of

players plus a number of exciting new players joining us. We have some bright young talent coming through our club and once again I expect we will see a good

number of our U18’s appearing for our rst team.

A huge thanks go to my fellow Board members, all of our volunteer helpers, our football management team and of course our loyal supporters. We hope you will follow us on our journey, grassroots football is important to us all, and Dorking FC

hopes to make its own contribution to the benet of everyone.

MATCH REPORT:DORKING FC 3 - 4 SHEERWATER FC

19/09/15A game with Dorking showing both their strengths and weaknesses in roughly equal measure, ended in a narrow defeat. Slack defending in the first half gave way to a spirited fight back that came close to earning all three points for the Chicks, before another lapse at the back gave the win to Sheerwater.

With both teams looking for a win after slow starts to the season, the opening minutes were scrappy, but the visitors took the lead on 7 minutes when a fairly tame shot from the edge of the area appeared to deceive Chicks' keeper Andrew Osei, who could only watch as the ball rolled into the far corner of the Dorking net.

Dorking responded well to the setback, and were level ten minutes later. Zach Powell crossed the ball from a deep position, the keeper came for it but was beaten by the head of Martin Smith, who flicked on to Jimmy Brazil to score the equaliser.

However, two goals in three minutes gave the Chicks a mountain to climb. On 24 minutes the ball broke to a Sheerwater's Jamal Rodney, unmarked on the edge of the area and, with no pressure on the ball, he was free to rifle the ball into the net. Then a clumsy chal-lenge in the box resulted in a penalty, which was duly converted.

At half time, Dorking looked defensively fragile but had created enough chances to sug-gest a revival was possible - and so it proved. Five minutes into the second half, Glen Wright pounced on a loose ball in the box to pull the score back to 2-3. If Wright's reaction to halving the deficit was determined and warrior-like, the response was even stronger on 62 minutes when he beat a man and finished coolly, following Smith's square ball across the edge of the box.

There's never been a lack of fight in Glynn Stephens' Dorking and they fully deserved to have pulled the game back to 3-3. A winner looked likely as Zach Powell drove just wide of the post and Jimmy Brazil saw his header from a corner cleared off the line. But a minute from time, Sheerwater's Rideout picked up the ball on the left hand side of the area and waltzed into the box too easily, before despatching a shot past Osei and into the net to give the visitors a 4-3 win.

After scoring three goals and a great fight back, defensive frailties had proved costly. Dorking were left to rue the unavailability of a number of key players and manager Glynn Stephens has moved quickly to boost squad numbers with new signings this week.

RPM RECORDS DIV 1 CHALLENGE CUP, 2nd ROUND22/09/15

Dorking found the perfect antidote to recent disappointments with a comprehensive league cup victory at Frimley Green.

Although Captain Martin Smith will grab the plaudits for his hat-trick, this was an excellent all-round performance by the Chicks against opponents who came into the game on the back of four straight wins and played in the Premier Division only last year.

Manager Glynn Stephens gave a first start of the season to local lad Harry Daly, a graduate from the club’s Under 18s, and there was a full debut for Scott Wason.

Well organised and committed, Dorking flew out of the traps and it was no surprise when Martin Smith opened the scoring on 16 minutes, a quickly taken throw-in left the home team flat footed and put Smith through to slot the ball into the net.

There was a strong penalty shout ten minutes later as Glen Wright cleverly lobbed the onrushing Frimley keeper and a defender appeared to handle the ball, but the referee was unmoved by the appeals of the Dorking players.

The second goal duly arrived just minutes later, as Glen Wright forced the ball home following a scramble in the box.

Meanwhile, the 18 year old Daly, who has been waiting patiently for his chance this season, took it with both hands as he marshalled the Dorking defence like a seasoned pro. And, at half-time, the Chicks’ 2-0 lead was fully justified by their dominance.

There was no let up in the second half. It took just four minutes for the third goal to arrive as Jimmy Brazil was set free down the right, delivering a pin-point cross for Smith to place in the net.

Only a top-class save denied debutant Wason a goal from a superbly struck 30 yard free kick, but Smith grabbed the fourth goal on 55 minutes, breaking from within th half and rounding the keeper to complete his hat-trick.

Wright’s strike from outside the box added a fifth and there was just time, four minutes from the end, for Frimley to grab a consolation, scoring from a rebound after Chicks’ keeper Andrew Osei saved a penalty. But just failing to keep a clean sheet could hardly take the gloss off an excellent all-round Dorking performance.

By a quirk of fixture scheduling, the Chicks face Frimley Green again in today’s home league fixture. And although our visitors can be expected to offer more resistance at the second time of asking, Dorking can take great encouragement from both this victory and the manner of the result.

MEADOWBANK UPDATE No. 2: LOVE FOOTBALL, LOVE YOUR

COMMUNITY, JOIN DORKING FC!

Dorking FC is looking for new volunteers to join the running of thecommunity-based club in a new Management Committee, as it gets in shape for

a return home to the new Meadowbank football ground in 2016.

Work will start at the end of this month on the rebuilding of the Chicks' tradi-tional home at Meadowbank. In just under a year, Dorking FC will return to the

town at the heart of a new, state-of-the-art stadium, providing an exciting sports facility for the whole community. Over a thousand local youth players will join

the club at the new Meadowbank, taking advantage of the all-weather articial pitch for weekly training sessions. Surrey FA have also announced that they are

moving their headquarters to the site, making Dorking's home ground the centre of football in the county.

Plans for the exciting move home start now. Dorking FC is a not-for-prot organisation, run on an entirely voluntary basis and in accordance with true amateur sport values, in the interests of the community. In preparation for next season, the club is now recruiting to some key, voluntary

posts on a new Management Committee.

Chairman Grant Ashley says, "Since taking over and rescuing Dorking FC last year, the club has been run by a Board of just ve volunteer Directors. The foun-

dations for survival have been laid and, with the return to acompletely rebuilt Meadowbank ground, this is now one of the most

exciting times and opportunities in the club's 135 year history. So the time is right for us to open up the running of the club to local people in a new Manage-

ment Committee."

Grant goes on to explain, "We want as many local people as possible who love football and love their community to get involved in establishing this great new sporting project for the town. If we all work together to get this right, we'll have

a fantastic new Dorking football facility in Meadowbank park, used by thou-sands of local people, bringing a huge boost to the town centre, and with a

thriving community-orientated football club at its heart."

Dorking FC is looking for local people to join the new Voluntary Management Committee in three key roles:

• Fundraising Manager• Club Supporters and Membership Manager• Youth and Community Engagement Manager.

Page 13: 26.09.15 Frimley Green rogerfiles.pitchero.com/clubs/18447/26.09.15frimleygreen_150459.pdfben acton 6 james maheady 7 jamie daltry 8 matt baker 9 scott todd 10 ricky hogsden 11 ali

In addition, there are opportunities for people who would like to help out in any other way to join the club in non-specic assistant roles.

Fundraising ManagerWorking both alone and with others, the Fundraising Manager will help develop

new sources of revenue, from traditional sponsorship and advertising by local business to creative fundraising ideas and projects.

Club Supporters and Membership ManagerAs the work continues at Meadowbank and interest builds throughout 2016 in the community facility and Dorking FC's return, the Club Supporters and Mem-

bership Manager will tap into that local enthusiasm to engage with local people who might wish to follow the football club and make use of its facilities at Mead-

owbank - building a new, thriving membership and supporter base for the town's historic football club.

Youth and Community Engagement ManagerWith hundred of players from at least seven youth football clubs, local schools and other community groups all expected to make use of Meadowbank along-side Dorking FC, the Youth and Community Engagement Manager will work to liaise with other users and community groups, ensuring constructive and pro-ductive relationships. We aim to work together to maximise the potential not

just for all the voluntary groups involved in the new stadium, but for the whole of Dorking, in what is truly a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make a real

dierence for local football, Meadowbank park, community activity in the town centre, local business and the entire town.

If you would like to know more about these voluntary posts or are interested in helping run Dorking FC in any other capacity in one of the biggest years in the club's long history, dating back to 1880, then please email your contact details to [email protected] and the Chairman, Grant Ashley, will get back to

you to discuss the plans. Love football? Love Dorking? Then why not get involved!

CLUB HISTORYFRIMLEY GREEN FC:

repaying debts and the club were finally accepted into the Surrey Premier League in 1999, after finishing Run-ners-up and winning the League Cup. Off the field new Floodlights were installed and a Boardroom created within the Club-house.

A three year spell followed, in the renamed Surrey Senior League, which saw the club finish fourth, sixth and Runners –up and attain promotion back into the Combined Counties League where they have played since. Season 2004-05 was the most successful to date, in the Combined Counties League, with the club finish-ing in 15th Place and amass-ing 58 points.

Season 2005-06 was very disappointing on the playing front but we managed to avoid finishing in a rele-gation position, however, despite substantial ground improvements we were demoted on ‘ground grad-ing’, to make way for 7 clubs from the old Ryman Division two. In the next 4 seasons in Division One we had mixed fortunes, finishing 6th at the end of season 2007/08 but then in season 2008/09

The club was founded in 1919 and currently play at Frimley Green Recreation Ground.

The present clubhouse was erected in 1972 when ‘The Green’ played in the London Spartan League and used a pitch on the lower part of the park with the changing rooms where the car park now is. A few years later a new pitch was laid adjacent to the clubhouse and chang-ing rooms were added. The Reserve Team joined the Combined Counties League in 1979 and at the start of the 1981/82 season the First Team switched across and Floodlights were installed for the first time. The Club com-peted in the League for a period of 15 years, during which time they won the Dan Air Elite Cup and the Reserves won the Division One Challenge Cup.

Due to the financial situation in 1994 the club voluntarily dropped down into junior football. They were Run-ners-up in the Surrey Inter-mediate League (Western) in their first season but were denied promotion into the Surrey Premier League. The next four seasons saw a period of rebuilding and

finished 3rd from bottom but had our most successful season ever in the FA Vase, reaching the third round and won an FA Cup match for the first time. In season 2009/10 we managed to finish high enough up the table to retain our place in the FA Cup place but 2010/11 was a poor season and 2011/12 saw the appointment of Paul Miles and Ian Maynard mid season and they built a team to challenge for promotion in 2012/13. We did better than expected and won the title and 3 FA Vase games along the way, beating 2 level 5 opponents. Last season both Paul & Ian left us and Derren Martin took charge and we finished in a creditable mid table position, a good out-come for our first season back.

THE HISTORY OF DORKING FCFootball has been played in Dorking since the 1830’s. It was first played in the street, and an annual ‘match’ took place every Shrove Tuesday in

Dorking’s High Street. Those on the east of St Martin’s were one team known as the East-enders and those to the West, on the opposing team, were the Westenders. The “pitch” extended all the way from London Bridge Road to the Washway Bridge in Station Road.

The match was preceded by a procession led by a band and men dressed as women collecting donations and carry-ing a cross inscribed with words “kick away both Whig and Tory, wind and water, Dork-ing’s glory”. On the left of the cross was a red, white, and blue ball representing the Union, on the top a gold ball representing the winners, and on the right a red and green ball representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking. Celebra-tions went on well into the evening when pre‐match collections were first distributed to shopkeepers for window damage and the balance con-sumed in beer at The Sun.

This tradition continued until 1905 when it was outlawed after ten years of suppression, and by which time Association Football had defined formal

rules for the game in 1863 (dic-tating kicking only) when rugby went one way with hands, and “soccer” (abbreviation for Asso-ciation Football) went the other with feet. By now Dorking Foot-ball Club had formed in 1880, establishing itself as the second oldest football club in

Surrey and one of the oldest in the country. The club originally played in green and red striped shirts with white shorts – the three colours representing the famous Dorking cockerel.

The cockerel was also very apparent as the main feature of the club’s badge, and hence the club soon became affec-tionately known as “the Chicks”.

The team first played at a site on West Bank before moving to a pitch off Fairfield Drive and then later to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. The Chicks didn’t move to its current location at Meadowbank until 1953 when their success demanded better facilities and a new ground was built on an old dumpsite.

The new Meadowbank had a capacity of 5000 and a stand that accommodated 700. The ground was opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous and was inaugurated by an exhibition match against Corin-thian Casuals. Dorking’s most successful FA Cup run followed in 1955 when they beat Folkestone 3 – 1 in front of a home crowd of more than 4000 before going out in the next

round to local rivals Epsom. In the 1950s annual spectator club membership stood at more than 1000.
