If you don’t know what all the quacking is about around the lodge or from theguides…it’s Flint Oak’s newest form of Hunting, Duck Hunting. This fall will be ourfourth year of running our waterfowl program, and it continues to grow each year.As an added bonus to the diehard hunter, it allows you to enjoy three hunts in oneday since we start around 6:30 in the morning, depending on the sunrise.

Your guide will pick you up at the Lodge, and you receive a safety talk on theway to the blind. Once you arrive at West Lake and get settled into your blind theguide will serve you your giant breakfast burrito and coffee before the morningshooting begins.

Strategically placed around West Lake are four pit blinds, each is twenty-eightfeet long and accommodates up to six hunters, along with the guide and his lab(s).The fast-paced shooting includes both decoying and pass shooting of Mallards. After you have harvested your share of Mallards, your guide will return your partyback to the Lodge in time for your scheduled morning Field Hunt or European. Ifyou haven’t been on a Flint Oak Duck hunt yet, you better call today and makeyour reservation because for the last three years we ran out of ducks before sea-son’s end, forcing us to have to turn some away, something we do not like doing.

Duck Hunting at Flint Oak Quack-Quack-Quack

Help us serve you better. We schedule our personnel based onthe reservations we receive. This is why we require advancereservations on ALL activities. Spur of the moment decisions toadd to, or change, scheduled activities are difficult andsometimes impossible to accommodate. The more accurate theinformation you provide in advance, the better we can serve you.

The 2014 spring season at Flint Oakbegan with burning a large portion ofthe Ranch to kick start new growth forthe 2014/2015 hunt season. A coolJune and July, with lots of moisture thisyear, really gave a boost to milo andfood plots. Plenty of additional coverand foliage will make for great huntingthis year at Flint Oak. Preserve main-tenance continues to take up most ofour time as the summer days fly by. Be-tween road maintenance, mowing, spraying and planting there is neverenough time in the day. This past sum-mer Flint Oak built a new and improvedroad at the West Ranch. During thepast spring season three tom turkeyswere harvested at Flint Oak. We haveseen multiple shooter toms this summerand plan to see more members huntingfor these great turkeys next spring.

The hunting season is here andeveryone is getting excited. The dogsare ready for some actual “in the fieldaction”, because laying around all sum-mer for a working dog is boring. Theroading program is in full swing gettingeveryone in shape and we are puttingthe finishing touches on Flint Oak’syoung dogs that are starting their firsthunting season. All I can say is the ken-nels are getting pumped up to start see-ing birds flying so these hard workingdogs can do the job they so love to do.

Starting in the early spring the ken-nels have had several litters of pups in-cluding Brittanys, Labs, Pointers andGerman Shorthair Pointers. It has beenan exciting summer as these pups willbe the future of Flint Oak’s kennel dogsand they all seem to show a lot of prom-ise.

The dogs are ready to go, as theguide heads up the road to pick up theMembers and their guests who are ex-cited to experience their first field huntof the season at Flint Oak. On the wayto the field, the guides give the safetytalk, letting the hunters know that tohave a great hunt everyone must besafe.

With the truck parked and theguides readying the dogs, the huntershear pheasants cackling and just knowit’s going to be a great hunt. As thegroup enters the fields, watching thegreat dog work, the first point of the daygets everyone’s blood pumping.Throughout the three-hour hunt, thedogs point numerous pheasant, quailand Chukar, and all hunters makememories to last a lifetime. While walk-ing the group experiences some of thebest hunting terrain in the country alongwith many great views of Flint Oak.Halfway through the hunt, the guidegets two fresh dogs and the huntersmay get a drink and give each othertrouble about missed shots.

Hunt season at Flint oak is great, sobook a hunt for this fall and come pre-pared to experience the best uplandhunting of your life.

Good... definitely, Old Fashioned… not at Flint Oak Flint Oak brought back the fun and non-stop action and shooting when we in-

troduced the Super Quail Hunt. The 2014-2015 Hunt Season is the fifth year forthis action packed event. The Super Quail Hunt averages between twelve to four-teen coveys of quail, affords constant action and definitely ups the fun factor.Watching the dogs hunt down singles and retrieve is, for some, the best part ofthe hunt. This style of hunt has become a Member/guest favorite.

Remember that when you book a field hunt, you now have the option of a SuperQuail hunt or our traditional mixed harvest fields hunt (quail, pheasant and Chukar). We can only accommodate a limited number daily so be sure and book your huntsearly for lots of action, fantastic dog work and magic moments that will last a life-time.

Good Old Fashioned Quail Hunts

The 2014 fishing season is one of our best years yet. We had more guidedtrips by the end of July than in all of the 2013 season. Fish quality increases everyyear and this year several bass caught were in the five to eight pound range andwipers averaging eight to ten pounds. Another great success was the new fishingat West Lake. One boat, two anglers, one-half day with no guide at West Lakeseemed a great fit for many of our members.

Spring was cooler than usual causing the water to stay cold longer, making ita little rough to catch fish in the earlier part of the season. But once the watermade it up to spawning temperature the fishing went wild and has not let up.

Summer has been very delightful with mild weather and plenty of rain to keepthe lake up and the vegetation lush, always a good thing to have at Flint Oak.There were even a few successful trips in the rain.

Don’t forget Flint Oak’s fishing season goes all through October, weather per-mitting. Late season is as good as any, so come on out, see us and let’s wet ahook!

Flint Oak is proud to announce thenewest member of our managementteam. Brent Rutledge accepted a pro-motion to the Preserve Manager posi-tion.

Brent started working at Flint Oakon July 21, 2011 in the Kennel Depart-ment; little did he know then that hewould one day take the biggest step inhis life to date by accepting a promotionto Preserve Manager. He stated, “I amvery excited to work at this level andhope to make the most of it.”

Brent believes he is qualified for theposition based not only on his experi-ence at Flint Oak, but also on his back-ground. He grew up on a farm in EastTexas rearing Angus cattle and balinghay. Brent and his family kept busy withthe farm, but always found time to huntand fish, two things about which he isvery passionate.

Taught how to hunt many differentanimals, one in particular held his at-tention more than the others did. At ageeleven, he was introduced to the chal-lenge of duck hunting and he stated, “Iam still just as interested as I was onmy first duck hunt. Nothing smells bet-ter than gunpowder at sunrise.”

“Enough about me, let’s get thisHunting Season started. I cannot waitto see all the new and familiar faces atFlint Oak.”

Congratulations Brent.

Flint Oak is proud to introduce Vin-cent Reif as the new AccommodationsManager at Flint Oak

Welcome Back Vincent

Flint Oak’s New AccommodationsManager Vincent Reif

Hi, my name is Scott Turner, I amtwenty years old and I am fromHopewell, New Jersey. I have been anavid outdoorsman since I was sevenyears old. My dad started taking me outwith him when I was very young and Ithink that’s why I’ve become a very die-hard hunter today. I believe that’s why Iwent to school at Southeastern IllinoisCollege. I studied shooting complexmanagement and wildlife management. Now I have been placed here at FlintOak Ranch to see what it’s really like inthe day-to-day basis of running an op-eration like this.

I don’t think I could have beenplaced at a better facility. Everybodyhere is great and fun to work with andI’m learning everyday, which I love. Ilook forward to the rest of my time hereat Flint Oak Ranch.

Flint Oak Intern 2014

Scott Turner, Flint Oak’s 2014 Intern.

After feeding Purina for a solid yearthe Flint Oak Kennel has seen a majordifference. This past hunting seasonwas one of the hardest I have seen intwo different ways. First is that we hada large number of hunts and second itwas a cold winter. Put those two to-gether and it is hard on a working dog.If it wasn’t for feeding Purina dog foodwe wouldn’t have had an average of twoto four pounds weight increase per dogover the previous year and that yearwasn’t nearly as hard of a season asthis year was.

So ask yourself a question, whichdog food are you feeding. We feed Pu-rina!

One Word “Purina”

Tindle ConstructionCompany enjoyed shooting, relaxing by the pool, BBQ Buffet and Fireworks dur-ing their annual company picnic, while Crossland Construction split their group into two this year, with the Heavy Contractor side one weekend and the Construc-tion side then next weekend.

Tradition, Pageantry and History - Flint Oak’sThe driven pheasant shoot, re-

served for Europe’s royalty and aris-tocracy until the mid-20th Century, hasa long and rich history. The shoot be-gins with the Horns men. The huntinghorns blow notifying the shooters tobegin and the “beaters”, traditionallyservants walking through the woodsdriving the game ahead of them, startpushing the birds towards the shoot-ers. When the birds approach theclearing at the edge of the forest theyflush high and fly very, very fast to-wards the waiting guns providing “mis-sile” like targets. Traditionally, midwaythrough the hunt, servants broughttheir masters food and drink and afeast at the castle followed the hunt.

Flint Oak’s European shoots, in thetradition of those reserved for the kingsso long ago, begins with the huntinghorns. Flint Oak’s rich and diversebackground provides a truly excitingpheasant shooting for both the noviceand the experienced gun. As thehunters’ horns sound across the land-scape, prepare for the most exhilarat-ing pheasant shoot of your life. True totradition, food and drink are providedhalfway through the hunt, a welcomerespite to the shooting. The hunters’lunch served at the lodge, rounds outthe day. Start planning today for a trulyexciting pheasant shooting in FlintOak’s magnificent surroundings. Feellike a king; come to Flint Oak whereyou are royalty.

Flint Oak not only offers a variety ofPrivate European Hunt choices, FlintOak’s “Open European Shoot”, our“Grand Event”, is held virtuallythroughout the Hunt Season (seeschedule page 22). The pageantry ofthis event, the mix of participants, theweather and a myriad of other factors, make each and every shoot unique.

Held on Saturday mornings, this isthe “granddaddy” of our Europeans. Itincludes a wonderful buffet breakfast, acoffee break around a toasty campfire, ahearty lunch and an equal share of theday’s harvest.

The European has 39 blinds thatsurround the hill. Driven to flight, thepheasants fly towards the shooters.Flint Oak’s retrievers pick up the har-vested pheasants even as you shoot.

As each brace completes, you moveto a new blind that offers new and dif-ferent shooting challenges, then the funstarts all over. Shooting the Europeanwith a special friend or family membermakes memories to last a lifetime.

The Open European, scheduled reg-ularly throughout hunt season, is an“open” shoot; you can book reservationsfrom one to seventy-eight shooters!

At the Open Europeans, we serve avariety of buffet lunches to finish off yourfantastic European style driven shoot.

The Open European

The Mini, the first private Europeanshoot introduced at Flint Oak, hasproven to be very exciting and evensportier than we first anticipated. Atwelve blind shoot, it accommodates upto twenty-four shooters.

The birds are on the shootersQUICK on the west side (blinds 7through 12), the “forest side”. Theshooters need to help each other byyelling information to one another. Thebirds darting through tree openings ver-ify the importance of staying alert at alltimes. Instinctive “snap shooting” abilityis a real plus. Most of the bag comesfrom pass shots behind the blinds.

Blinds 1 and 6 transition from the for-est to the prairie side (blinds 2 through5). Circling and turning birds providesome long lead shots with the birds infull view and really moving fast! Thebirds reach such speed that very fewbirds harvested end up in front of theblind on the prairie side.

k’s Private and Open Driven Pheasant Shoots

The Phoenix was a mythical bird thatarose from the smoke and ashes of itsown destruction ! Thus, we thought itwas an appropriate name for this drivenshoot because those birds just seem tokeep rising and flying despite smokingshotguns ! The Phoenix, located on thewesterly portion of Flint Oak, accom-modates eighteen to thirty- six shooters.More trees and completely different ter-rain than any of our other Europeansmake for a unique shooting experience.

The Phoenix

The MeccaWebster defines the Mecca as “a

center of activity sought as a goal bypeople sharing a common interest”. Weat Flint Oak certainly hope that is truewith our Mecca. Nestled in the upperend of a long brushy draw, sitting amongsome very large oaks and blackjackswith cedars and oaks in the center, thisshoot produces some extremely chal-lenging shots. It also sets astride acreek forking into a bigger creek. Thearea is a very pretty site.

As you move around this shoot fromtimber to clearings, the variety of shoot-ing opportunities will amaze you.

This shoot, unlike some Europeans,is very versatile enabling groups of eightto sixteen shooters to use the shoot. With up to sixteen guns, extra birds willbe a blast.

The Scottie / Double Scottie

Ideal for six to eight shooters, theScottie lies toward the east and allowssmaller groups to enjoy European styleshooting.

-Or, the “Double Scottie” differs inthe fact that the shooters rotate aroundthe circle twice, giving more shootingopportunity and a second chance atmastering the nuances of each shoot-ing position. A coffee break after thecompletion of the first rotation enablesthe shooters to cuss and discuss theblinds and formulate new strategiesprior to the second round. The secondround’s harvest percentages are usu-ally much higher.

This shoot is ideal for those smallgroups of friends or clients that youwish to entertain on a more personalbasis.

European shoots are a great way tointroduce your friends or businessclients to Flint Oak. They are designedfor Private groups of all sizes. Thistype of shoot is ideal for those not ableto Field Hunt. When you factor in theunpredictability of Kansas weather, even the most experienced shooter willbe challenged, while the novice willhave an enjoyable experience huntingwith friends. The camaraderie and at-mosphere of these shoots is a greattool for team building. With all this inmind, why not schedule your EuropeanShoot soon?

To increase the fun and add moreshooting pleasure, extra birds may bepurchased for each of these shootsexcept the Open European.

by Carl Tiedemann About four miles south of Fall River,

Kansas, population: 152, is the locationof the Flint Oak Ranch, one of the topfive shooting preserves in the U.S. Sowhat does a shooting preserve have todo with a wine blog, you may wonder? In this case, a lot and I will explain aftera little history on the event I just at-tended at Flint Oak.

Since 1988 Flint Oak Ranch hasbeen the home of Herb “Bwana” Krum-sick’s annual Real Estate Review andForecast Conference and Hunt. This an-nual event, now in its 26th year (therewas a short break in 2011-2013 due tothe recession), is generally held nearthe last weekend in January (it is ad-justed for the Super Bowl). It is a gath-ering of some of the top real estate folksfrom around the county.

This year’s event started on a Thurs-day, as is the normal routine. Everyoneis instructed to arrive in Wichita, KS,where Herb lives, by 5:00 p.m. After ashort reunion of old friends and themaking of new ones, everyone is off tothe Flint Oak Ranch for dinner.

Let me begin by saying alcohol andguns do not mix. Flint Oak has very un-wavering and rigid safety rules and reg-ulations. A serious violation of any ofthe safety rules could result in youbeing asked to leave Flint Oak and aforfeiture of your fees, etc. Needless tosay there is no drinking of any liquor, beer or wine permitted until after all ac-

16

tivities of the day involving firearmshave been completed.

If you are a sportsman, Flint Oak isyour dream come true. Started in 1978with an original 699 acres, Flint Oakhas grown to some 5,500 acres nestledin Elk County about an hour and thirtyminutes southeast of Wichita, KS.

Flint Oak is a “5-star” National Asso-ciation of Shooting Ranges member-ship style facility (similar to a countryclub). The very first designationawarded by the National Association ofShooting Ranges was to Flint Oak. FlintOak is a year-round operation offeringa wide variety of hunting options in-cluding field hunts for upland game, Eu-ropean-driven style pheasant hunts, mallard duck hunting, and also deerand turkey hunting. Guided bass fishingis also available as well as a variety ofshooting sports including a 10-stationsporting clay course, 5-stand course, and a trap, skeet and knockout course.

The world-class sporting clay courseis great fun and challenging to shootwith each of the ten stations featuring aBruce Killen bronze. The course is de-signed for National Championshipshooting events. Many of which are heldthere annually.

Let me provide a couple more factsabout Flint Oak before we move on.

*Largest private employer in ElkCounty

*Employs 65 individuals full and parttime year round

*Flint Oak hosts over 7,000 hunters aseason, over 10,000 annually

*Over 100,000 various game birdsare purchased annually for release onthe ranch

*Flint Oak has 125 dogs in its kennelsand has 20 guides and handlers

*Has a staff of 23 in the accommoda-tions department which covers hotel, food, and beverages

*Flint Oak’s Executive Chef heads thekitchen with 4 line cooks

Finally, Flint Oak features an out-standing pro shop headed by BrendaEdwards. I will readily admit I have beenthe recipient of more than one newshotgun over the years due to Brenda’sknowledge and salesmanship.

Saturday afternoon is always setaside for the various speakers and dis-cussions

After all these years, a distinct pat-tern has seemed to emerge as to whenwe do our sporting or shooting events.Friday seems to be the day for SportingClays and this year was no different. Fri-day morning the temperature was hov-ering around 1 degree at breakfast timewith a wind chill factor below zero. NowI am an avid fan of shooting sportingclays, but at these temperatures, I willadmit I really wanted to stay by the fire-place. However, I dressed for the occa-sion and headed to the safety talk(always held before any shooting event)near the first shooting station. It hadwarmed to nearly 12 degrees by this

time. I will save you the details and tellyou that, as much as I love to shoot, Imade it through the first five stands andmy shooting pal and I headed for thewarmth of the lodge. I also knew thatthe afternoon program would be heldoutside as well, so I needed to warm upand get myself ready for the next event.Which by the way we were all told was“top secret” and we would be briefed onit later.

After lunch, we were all hustled offto the Lodge’s Conference Center for abriefing on the upcoming afternoon ac-tivities. After we were all seated, fourfellows from the Oklahoma Falconry As-sociation came on the stage and wereintroduced along with four differentbreeds of falcons.

After a brief explanation of each ofthe various types of falcons, we weredriven to the western part of the ranchfor a demonstration of the falcon’s hunt-ing skills. Let me give you a Friday af-ternoon weather update. It had nowwarmed up to about 17 degrees, with awind chill of about 9 degrees. We allthought that this was going to be a veryinteresting and exciting event to watch,(at least it seemed so at the time). Weassembled on a hilltop and waited forthe handlers to get in place with theirfalcons and then release their birds.

Let me set the stage for this falconhunt for you: There are 30 guys stand-ing on a hilltop in the middle of 5,500acres, in a wind chill of 9 degrees, star-ing down the side of a hill waiting for theaction to begin. Well as luck would haveit, sometime things just do not go asplanned. The first handler released thefalcon so it could begin circling over-head, gaining altitude as it circled. Thesecond handler released a partridge forthe falcon to hunt. Now the partridgewas to fly downhill away from us so wecould see the falcon hunt the partridgeright in front of us. Well the partridgehad plans of its own. It flew in the oppo-site direction, over the top of the crowdand to the other side of the hill, notdownhill in front of us. By this point inthe demonstration, the falcon had founda marsh hawk to dive for and com-pletely missed the partridge. All of thisleft us out in the cold cheering on themarsh hawk.

After some time the falcon returnedto the arm of the handler and we as-sembled, back on the hilltop, to see the

falcon and a have a photo with it. Yes,we are all allegedly educated adults, butto see us standing in the freezing coldon a hilltop getting our picture takenwith a bird, one might wonder aboutthat statement. I made it through onemore attempted demonstration andheaded for the heat of the van. Lookingat the accompanying pictures is a lotwarmer.

On Saturday and Sunday morning,we had several more hunting events, in-cluding an early morning duck hunt.

Early on in the planning cycle of thisyear’s event, I had volunteered to be incharge of assembling the wine list. Notan easy job considering there are somesophisticated wine drinkers in ourgroup.

My original plan was to have OldWorld wines on Thursday (Spanish)and Friday (French) evening, and NewWorld, particularly California wine, onSaturday.

As luck would have it, the wines Ihad selected and shipped to Flint Oakdidn’t arrive a week in advance of ourarrival as planned. The arctic weatherduring that period prevented the winesfrom being delivered. They finally ar-rived on Friday morning, a number ofdays late. Needless to say, we adaptedto the change in plans and enjoyedsome excellent wines.

This always shapes up to be a greatevent. Over the years we have all madesome wonderful friendships, received alittle education that hopefully helps usbe more successful in our business life, and we have tasted some great wine aswell. Not a “bad gig” as they say.Reprinted from TiedemannOnWines.com

The big event that took this place onthe Sporting Clays course was our an-nual Oakley Cup. This year’s event wasgreeted by the unseasonably cool tem-peratures that we experienced for thebiggest part of summer and one little4.5” rain shower. The shooting beganon Friday June 27 with our Small gaugeevent along with the thirteen stationLois Lessing Cup which was laid outaround the Mini European. This coursewas rolled on Friday evening into the K-State Cup which began on Saturday, when the Main Event Oakley Cupkicked off as well. The thirteen StationOakley course took place on back fenceline of the Ranch, just east of the MajorEuropean. It ran all day Saturday, chal-lenging the shooters with great targetsand wet skies at times, and was thenchanged at the end of the day to greetthe same shooters Sunday morningwith a totally different set of thirteen sta-tions.

When the smoke settled…sincedust was not an issue this year, KevinJacobson came out as the High OverallChampion shooting a very respectable91 / 92 for a 183 total.

High score for the K-State cup was atie between Terry Barrett and PeteSchleicher, each shooting a score of 88.High scorer for the Lois Lessing Cupwas Mickey Roberts, shooting an 89.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, along with Flint Oak’sstaff, held its 32nd Annual Hunter Safety Course at Flint Oak on August 9 and 10,2014 with forty-four attendees. This course is a great bonding experience betweenparent and child or grandparent and grandchild. With the new format in place, stu-dents were able to receive lots of hands on experience both in the class room andout on the preserve. After completing ten hours of classroom credits, each grad-uate receives a free box of shells to practice what they have learned on Flint Oak’s5-Star Sporting Clay Course. Participants and observers commented that theywere really impressed with the knowledge the students gained over the weekend. This is also a great time to experience everything Flint Oak has to offer, includingguided and non-guided fishing, shooting on Flint Oak’s 5-Star Sporting ClayCourse and swimming, which many participants enjoyed while here for the week-end. There is no fee for taking the course and it is a great experience for all ages.Thank you to Roger Wells, Aaron Scheve, Dustin Lantow, Bryan Pearson, JohnYoung and Pat Riese for donating their time to assist with this event. Don’t forgetto mark you calendar for our 33rd Annual Hunter Safety Course to be held August8 and 9, 2015 at Flint Oak. The course will be limited to 50 participants, so makesure to sign up early!

Once again, we would like to thankall of the Flint Oak guest, family andfriends who came out for this year’s 4thAnnual Luau. Every year we seem topick the hottest day of the year for thisevent, however this year I think wepicked the wettest. Though it was wet,it was still a success. The dancers didan amazing job even though they didn’tuse the stage because of the rain andthey had mud up to their knees. Thefood was a hit and the pig came out per-fect. Surprisingly the fireworks showwas not a wash and it went off without ahitch. Thank you all for coming and welook forward to another great event for2015.

Our Polaris Gator hunts were verypopular this past hunting season. TheGators, with their four-seat capacity, arecapable of fitting you and two of yourguests comfortably, with plenty of stor-age for gear and guns. It offers a greatopportunity for our hunters to have allthe excitement and thrills of our alreadyenjoyable field hunts and to make fieldhunts available for our guests that couldnot otherwise walk the terrain for threehours to enjoy hunting upland birds.

Flint Oak’s guides chauffeur youaround following the amazing pointingdogs across the beautiful Flint Hills. The gators are very smooth riding, making it easier to watch some awe-some dog work or to take in some ofFlint Oak’s spectacular scenery.

Whether you are hunting or wouldjust like to go watch the action, be sureto request a Gator to enhance your nexthunting experience and we will happilybook your Gator hunt.

The following article by Joe Kneze-vic appeared in American Iron Maga-zine. Joe flew into Wichita, mounted aKMW motorcycle and along withfriends, headed to Flint Oak. Here is hisrecount of that portion of his trip.

Our plan was to head east into thescenic Flint Hills region of southeasternKansas to get to Flint Oak, America’sPremier Hunting Resort. We continuedeast on 400 until we reached the townof Fall River, where we turned southand followed the signs for Flint Oak.This 5,500-acre property is one of thetop shooting facilities in the country andholds a five-star rating from the NationalAssociation of Shooting Ranges(NASR). Right off the bat, I was totallyimpressed by the facilities and must sayit was easy to see why this place is ashooters and hunters’ dream location.

Upon arrival, our goal was to getsettled in and get some shooting prac-tice on the skeet range, but by the timeour group got checked into the lodgeand visited the pro shop to secure ourBenelli rental shotguns for the nextday’s European pheasant shoot, thesun was beginning to set. To my sur-prise, the folks at Flint Oak told us thatthey would simply turn on the lights sowe could work on our rusty shootingskills on the skeet range so we could beon target for the next day’s hunt. Afterseveral rounds, we felt we were pre-pared for the big event so we adjourned

back to the lodge and had an outstand-ing meal and some adult beverages atthe lodge restaurant on-site.

The next morning, all the huntersmet for a hearty breakfast and attendeda safety meeting before we were takento what we came for, the Flint Oak’sopen European driven pheasant shoot. For those that are not familiar with thistype of hunt, up until the mid-20th cen-tury, a driven pheasant shoot was re-served for European aristocrats androyalty. To recreate this, Flint Oak hasset up thirty-nine different blinds thathold two hunters each and surround ahill. In the center, beaters drive the cap-tive-reared pheasants to flight, sendingthem high into the air, where they be-come free game for the people inwhichever blind they come in range of.As you can imagine, the shooting be-comes fast and furious while the pheas-ants streak across the sky at top speedin every direction. While this is goingon, the supplied retrieving dogs gatherthe spoils. As in traditional Europeanshoots, midway through the shoot, thegroup takes a break to enjoy nonalco-holic drinks and snacks before goingout for some more hunting. Afterward, the whole group reconvenes at thelodge to share stories and learn howproductive the day was — our groupshot something like 63 percent.

Flint Oak is a private member hunt-ing club, so to visit and participate in

any of its many hunting events duringthe hunting season you need to be amember or the guest of a member as Iwas. The good news is that during thesummer season (April 1 through Sep-tember 30), Flint Oak’s facilities areopen to the public. To me, the best partof what it offers motorcyclists is thateverything you need to enjoy the shoot-ing sports can be rented from the full-line pro shop while you’re visiting, making it an ideal place to ride to andgo shooting. Regardless of your interestin Flint Oak, I’m sure the fine youngladies at reservations are capable ofmaking it work for you and your ridinggroup.

Having had our fill of hunting andskeet shooting the previous day, in themorning we remounted our choppersand headed out.

Memories to last a lifetime

The only way wecan continue to provide the servicesyou expect at realistic prices is if allguests respect and adhere to our reser-vation and cancellation guidelines. Wehave tried to structure our requirementsto be fair to ALL concerned, you, otherguests and Flint Oak.

FISHING REMINDERSFishing is April 1st through October31st. Catch and release only for Bassand Wipers. See fishing rules. Duringthese months fishing for overnightguests and Social Members is at CenterLake, Duck Pond, along the creek andLodge Lake from the silo to the wind-sock. Indian Lake is not included. Dur-ing the month of September fishinglakes may be booked as long as no Eu-ropean or Field Hunts are scheduled inthe vicinity.During fishing season Flint Oak rentalboats are permitted on Center Lake. Noboats are allowed on Lodge Lake orTimber Lake due to the shot fall fromSporting Clays. We are very concernedabout contamination of our water byzebra mussels or other invasivespecies. Under no circumstances willboats not owned by Flint Oak be al-lowed on any of the lakes or the creek. No waders allowed. Artificial bait onlyin the lakes, barbless hooks required.

GUIDED FISHING CANCELLATIONSGuided fishing cancellations receivedeight (8) days in advance, no charge;cancelled seven (7) days or less $125per boat reserved.

HUNT SEASONRESERVATIONS AND CANCELLATIONSAll activities at Flint Oak require AD-VANCE RESERVATIONS. We limit thereservations we accept to the person-nel and facilities we have available. Un-like the airlines, WE DO NOTOVERBOOK! If we accept your reser-vation, we guarantee that we will haveeverything required for your activities(just like buying a ticket to a ball-game).We are located “deep in the country”and do not have passerby business. Our food orders and personnel sched-ules are made weekly and must bebased on advance reservations.

Once your reservation is booked, weincur the expense of whatever advanceordering and planning are required. Soif you fail to come, or cancel after the ex-pense of preparations has been in-curred, what is fair? Should all guestsbe penalized by increased charges tocover these expenses? Most of ourguests believe it is fairer to charge acancellation fee to those who create theincreased cost!
