Happy Birthday!!! Mnoha] Lita!!!

Protection of the Mother of God In 1037, Prince Yaroslav the Wise of Kyiv dedicated the

nation of Rus’-Ukraine to the Patronage of Mary, the Mother of

God. With the advent of Christianity in Ukraine, came devotion

to the one who bore Christ, Mary the God -bearer. Her icons are

to be found in every Ukrainian home, Catholic or Orthodox, and

many miraculous icons of Mary are to be found in Ukraine -

Hoshiv, Pochaev, Zavarnitsia to name a few.

The Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God -Oct 1/14

-is a great feast among the Slavs. In Ukraine, it was considered

the beginning of winter. The blanketing of snow reminds us of

Mary protecting us under the veil of her protection that shines

like the glory of God. She intercedes for her people to Jesus

Christ, her Son.

In pre-Christian Ukraine, October was associated with the cult

of dead ancestors, marriages, procreation-new families and the

end of the agricultural cycle. Just as the ice and snow protect the

soil, Mary’s veil protects the newly married couples and their

wedding crowns. In Trans Carpathia, the cattle are herded down

the mountains to spend the winter in the barn. The master of the

house places a veil over the icon of the Mother of God assuring

her protection.

For the Zaporozhian Kozaks, the Feast of the Protection was

the greatest holyday. On that day, they would elect a new

Hetman-chieftain. They considered the Mother of God as their

Protectress-Patron and named the church in their fortress, the Sich

in honor of her Holy Veil. There are even some 17th-18th

century Ukrainian icons; the Mother of God is holding her veil of

protection over the clergy and Kozaks. When Tsarina Catherine

the Great of Russia destroyed the Sich in 1775, the remaining

Kozaks escaped and took the icon of the Protection with them. In

Ukraine, the feast of the Protection is a national holiday in honor

of the Kozaks and Ukrainian Armed Forces.

On April 5-6, 2014, Patriarch Sviatioslav Shevchuk of the

Ukrainian Catholic Church renewed the Act of Consecration of

the whole Ukrainian nation including the Diaspora, under the

Intercession of the Blessed Mother. This was because of the

war with Russia and Ukraine’s uncertain future. “Taking into

consideration these new historical circumstances, I want to direct

your spiritual eyes to the Mother of God and in response to her

loving and caring presence in our lives-to place all of in her

motherly care…By this Act we solemnly recognize God’s

watchfulness over us, we express our love toward the Mother of

God, our readiness to fulfill all that her Son and our Lord Jesus

Christ commands us; and our desire to serve God and our nation

only in the light of God’s law. May this prayer to the Most

Holy Mother of God be a concrete demonstration of our desire to

implement this consecration in our lives. We will observe this

consecration personally and communally, petitioning the Lord for

his blessing upon our longsuffering nation through the

intercession of the Theotokos…she joins us in the unending

praise of the Most High, while at the same time, as a loving

Mother she continuously intercedes for us before the Lord.”
