About AVFThe American Venous Forum (AVF) is dedicated to

improving the care of patients with venous and lymphatic

disease. Founded in 1987, AVF fosters cutting edge

research and clinical innovation and educates health

care professionals, patients and policy makers about

venous and lymphatic diseases. AVF’s leadership and

membership are recognized internationally as thought

leaders, expert investigators and clinicians in venous

and lymphatic health care.

Message from the President

I invite you to attend the American Venous Forum’s 26th Annual Meeting in New Orleans,

research. I hope the Annual Meeting provides an opportunity for each participant to gain

new insights into how venous and lymphatic health is evolving and to take advantage of

rapidly developing technologies. I am also excited that there will be some new offerings at

the Annual Meeting.

management and mismanagement of venous and lymphatic disease. The Venous Summit

panel will consist of experts in venous disease, research, insurance, and law.

discussion about their research. As an added bonus this year, the Meeting will feature more than eighty poster

presentations and displays. The top presenters will be announced during the Mardi Gras Soirée.

February 20. The Symposium will focus on the approach to acute venous thromboembolism, with emphasis on acute

of low molecular weight heparins, and more recently, the availability of new oral anticoagulants. The symposium will

offer state of the art therapy review.

of February 20. Dr. Smith is an international expert in the venous thrombosis pathophysiology. The emphasis

of his research is on the elucidating mechanisms that regulate thrombus resolution and the development and

maintenance of venous valves.

New this year, the Annual Meeting will offer participants the option to attend two of the six Specialty Symposia

In the spirit of New Orleans, we will have a Mardi Gras Soirée to close out the meeting on the evening of February

21. The Soirée will provide the opportunity for participants to engage with old and new colleagues in a relaxed

setting and congratulate award recipients all while immersing in New Orleans culture with live music and cuisine.

Meetings bring together internationally recognized

thought leaders, expert investigators and clinicians in

venous and lymphatic disease.

The AVF is comprised of over 750 members who are

primarily physicians and surgeons in the treatment of

venous and lymphatic disease. The AVF Annual Meeting

has been growing each year and this year we expect

over 600 attendees and associates from the United

States and around the world. This year we gather in New

interventional radiologists, interventional cardiologists,

phlebologists, plastic surgeons, physician assistants,

vascular nurse practitioners, technicians, technologists

and other medical professionals who are currently

treating venous disease.

An expected side effect of increasing number of practitioners who treat patients with venous disease is a substantial

general. Time has come for professional societies to take a hard look at this situation and decide what can be done

of care for venous disease, existing evidence supporting management strategies when complications occur, and

about ethical, legal and reimbursement issues involved in management of such cases. The discussion is expected

on the effective ways to deal with reimbursement challenges.
