Each completed page (12 total) is worth 1.0 point each, 12.0 points total. - zero points are assigned to pages that did not have a required stamp

(both pages of Organ Comparison; Urine Analysis page). - deductions are taken to pages that are incomplete, have errors, or

inappropriate content.

Please leave this page blank for the graders. /12.0

Exploration PageThis page is an opportunity to journal something of interest to you. Try something new: a new science topic, a new technique of writing or sketching, and/or something that may be of interest to “future you.”

Urine Analysis

Provide a tentative diagnosis, including your rationale for the diagnosis.

What would you want to do to determine whether this diagnosis is correct or not?

Record your observations of the sample simulated urine in the table below:

Study QuestionsGather all of your BI 103 study materials (lecture notes, activities,

online previews, reading notes. Write possible exam questions and the correct answer to each.

From the Digestive Organs lab, write a question about a bolded word.

Write questions you feel are likely to be on exam #1; make studying more game-like (fun and memorable).

Typically lectures have four parts, four possible exam questions. Write a question from the material in the Digestive System lecture.

If there is an activity station about a topic, or multiple questions, its fair game. Write a likely Nutrition recitation activity station question.

Science Practices

What is peer review and why is it important in science?

What is reduction of bias and why is it important in science?

Additional information is available in the 125A Weniger hallway display case.

Study Questions

Write a possible question over a digestive system topic in the textbook readings.

After exam #1, confirm whether some of these questions appeared on the exam.

One of the most effective ways to study is to write, and then answer, possible exam questions. Be careful not to just write

questions about what you already know well.

Write a question about a topic that has appeared in more than one part of the course.

Typically there is approximately one exam question for each objective (Appendix C of the manual). Select an objective and write a question.

Science PracticesThere are characteristics of how science is actually done, including

ethics, reduction of bias, and peer review in science.

In your own words, describe what “ethics” is.

What would be an example of an ethical behavior?

What would be an example of an unethical behavior?

Why is ethics important in science?

Organ Comparison

100x

Make detailed labeled drawings of the trachea and ileumat 100X magnification. Scan the slide to find all of thecomponents you need to label before starting to draw.

TracheaDraw and label: columnar ciliated epithelium, cartilage, muscle, and ducts

Structure Function

Columnar Ciliated Epithelium hint: what is the function of epithelial tissues?

Cartilage hint: this is also found supporting the nose and ears

Muscle hint: what is the primary function of muscle tissues?

Ducts hint: think about an air duct, or a water duct, in eachcase a substance is…

Stamp What conclusions can you draw from your activity, heart rate & temperature data?

Body Data

Describe two limitations in these data collection techniques.

Design a brief data collection plan that can be used to generate body data of interest related

to diet, exercise, sleep, or learning.

Organ Comparison

IleumDraw and label: villi, surface epithelium, muscle, and glands

Structure Function

Villi hint: the intestines need a lot of surface area for …

SurfaceEpithelium hint: epithelial tissues are _____ of organs

Muscle hint: what is the primary function of muscle tissues?

Glands hint: glands like the thyroid gland, the adrenal glands, and the pituitary gland all…

The trachea (windpipe) is an organ of the __________________ system; the ileumis a portion of the ______________________, an organ of the ____________________ system. Both organs are tube-like, but with different structures and functions.

Body Data

Stamp Following the directions in the activity manual, fill in activity, heart rate, and surface temperature three times over each of the next three days.

Exam Analysis

What was my study strategy for this exam? (hours spent, study locations, study materials made, etc.)

Start studying for exam #2 right now. From the new material covered since Monday’s exam,

write two possible exam questions that may appear on exam #2.

See anyone in the teaching team for assistance, if desired.

Exam AnalysisAnswer these questions after exam #1

Did I recognize all/most of the material on the exam? ___________ (can indicate whether studying covered the full range of material)

Did I think I performed better on the exam than I actually did? ___________ (indicates learning to recognize material rather than retrieving answers)

Were there multiple answers I changed, or wasn’t sure about? ____________ (if correct answers don’t pop into the mind, studying may address this)

Did any particular source of material seem to cause more di!culty than other sources? (lecture, lab, readings)

Were you sure something would be on the exam, but it wasn’t? It may be appearing again in the course and be on a future exam.

What are three possible ways to improve studying for the next exam?

If you received a perfect score on the exam, use these pages to w

rite about what you did w

ell, for future reference
