1) What are some topics in your discipline that align well with the “real world”?

Biology

• Nutrition (health and medicine), • Photosynthesis (farming and agriculture and

environmental) • Human body (medicine and health) • Forensics (law enforcement), genetics (law

enforcement- used in modern medicine) • Ecology (farming, conservation),

Earth Science

• Ecology( farming, conservation), Stratification(oil and exploration), meteorology( daily weather), astronomy(NASA exploration)

2) How are skills learned in your classroom useful outside your classroom?

Biology

• Punnett square (genetic traits that might be passed on) nutrition (human body, social issues, obesity/ eating disorder, carcinogens in food, and how it effects the body) Ecology (agriculture, how conservations of the animal and plants change our world,Genetics (to find out the traits that might be dominant in family)carcinogens causes cancer, etc, how it impacts the bodyit does tie it all together

Earth Science

stratification (for oil and gas exploration) astronomy (how to find the constellations)

Meteorology- (understand the weather) (weather patterns, global warming, and what

to wear outside everyday) Ecology (agriculture (why we are concerned with saving our environment and the green movement)

3) What are ways to bring new forms of technology (not just PowerPoint's and TV’s) into the classroom for students

Skype- get experts into the classroom Mind maps- organize thoughts

Smart board- great tool Websites- NASA , USGs, Census

Scientific method- like Andrew had mentionedClickers- classroom votes

You tube- ways to show experiments 3D programs

Second life

4)What are topics in your discipline that could be weaved together in a long term project?

Earth science- space exploration

Metrology- daily log of the weatherBiology- humanitarian efforts

Biology- a plant project Genetics- GMO/GMP

Biology- environmentalism, composting

5) What challenges do you anticipate in having students take part in a long term, student

centered project?

Keeping attention Pacing

OwnershipEquipment

Time Reflecting

Backup planCost

6) What is your role as a teacher in an environment that is student centered?

• Plan • Be Organized

• Know when to Back Off • Know when to take control

• Have materials and other resources available• Know what questions to ask

• Be a reference• Give lots of support

• Know where to find answers• Know the lesson well• Be able to reflect
