Lo scorso giugno, i produttori europei di pan-nelli a base di legno si sono riuniti a Dunblane, in Scozia, per il loro incontro generale annuale del 2019, ospitato generosamente da Nor-bord Europa. Tutti i partecipanti hanno rice-

vuto una copia della nuova relazione annuale EPF 2018/2019, i cui dati principali sono stati presentati durante gli incontri. Nel comp-lesso, nel 2018 l’industria ha registrato una crescita della produzione dell’1,7%, trainata da aumenti di pannelli truciolari, compensato, pannelli di fibra duri e pannelli di fibra soffici.

Last June, the European manufacturers of wood-based panels gathered in Dunblane, Scotland for their 2019 Annual General Meeting, generously hosted by Norbord Europe.

All attendees received a copy of the new EPF 2018/2019 Annual Report, the headline figures of which were presented during the meetings. Overall the industry recorded a production growth during 2018 of 1.7%, led by increases on particleboard, plywood, hardboard and softboard.

During the General Assembly, Dr Paolo Fantoni (Fantoni) was unanimously re-elected as Chairman of EPF for his third term from 2019-2021. Mr Bernard Thiers (Unilin) remains Vice-Chairman. Come saranno le macchine per la produzi-one di pannelli a base di legno tra 20 anni? Stefan Zipf, capo dell’unità aziendale Wood in Dieffenbacher, produttore di macchinari e impianti con sede a Eppingen, ha affrontato la questione in occasione dell’assemblea gen-erale annuale dell’EPF del 26-28 giugno 2019 a Dunblane, Scozia / Regno Unito. Prima di dare uno sguardo al futuro, per prima cosa ha dato uno sguardo indietro e ha osservato che, ad esempio, lo sviluppo e la rapida diffusione degli smart-phone non erano prevedibili 20 anni fa. Oggi, invece, non sorprende che un produttore di macchine come Dieffenbach-er offra anche ai suoi clienti App mobili per i loro impianti. Allo stesso modo, non è anco-ra possibile ora prevedere con certezza come sarà il mondo nel 2039. Sebbene sia certo che molti componenti dell’impianto continueran-no a detenere potenziale di ottimizzazione nel prossimo futuro, come si può vedere dal nuo-vo schermo oscillante ad alta capacità HCOS o dal sistema di risparmio colla EvOjet M 2.0, in generale l’obiettivo dello sviluppo è non più solo sulle macchine, ma piuttosto sulla digital-izzazione. Dieffenbacher vede la digitalizzazi-one come uno strumento per raggiungere un orientamento ancora maggiore verso il cliente. La società è consapevole che lo sviluppo è solo all’inizio. “Qualunque cosa possa venire dalla nostra parte dal punto di vista tecnico”, affer-ma Zipf, “anche nel 2039, una collaborazione fiduciosa e cooperativa tra fornitore di appar-ecchiature e cliente sarà la chiave del succes-so”. Alla fine della sua presentazione, Zipf ha fatto appello a tutti i soggetti coinvolti nella catena del valore affinché lavorassero insieme più da vicino. Questo è l’unico modo per fare una buona previsione per il 2039.

Dieffenbacher’s vision of the future!

What will machines for the production of wood-based panels look like in 20 years? Stefan Zipf, head of the Wood business unit at Eppingen-based machine and plant manufacturer Dieffenbacher, addressed this question at the EPF Annual General Meeting on 26-28 June 2019 in Dunblane, Scotland/UK. Before taking a look into the future, he first took a look back and noted that, for example, the development and rapid spread of smartphones was not predictable 20 years ago. Today, on the other hand, it comes as no surprise that a machine manufacturer like Dieffenbacher also offers its customers mobile apps for their plants. Similarly, it is still not possible now to predict with certainty what the world will look like in 2039.Although it is certain that many plant components will continue to hold potential for optimization in the near future, as can be seen from the newly developed HCOS High-Capacity Oscillating Screen or the EVOjet M 2.0 glue saving system, in general the focus of development is no longer only on the machines, but rather on digitalization.Dieffenbacher sees digitalization as an instrument to achieve even greater customer orientation. The company is aware that the development is only at the very beginning. “Whatever may come our way from a technical point of view,” says Zipf, “also in 2039, a trusting and cooperative cooperation between equipment supplier and customer will be the key to success.” At the end of his presentation, Zipf appealed to everyone involved in the value chain to work together more closely. This is the only way to make a good forecast for the year 2039.

La formaldeide ha fatto parte della nostra vita quotidiana per molto tempo. È stata una delle prime sostanze chimiche ad essere sintetizzata e prodotta in serie alla fine del XIX secolo, quando l’industria si è ispirata al ruolo della formaldeide come compo-nente naturale nelle foreste, negli alimenti e nel corpo umano per produrre colle, resine, materie plastiche e rivestimenti lungo con molte altre applicazioni.Uno degli usi più importanti della formaldei-de è quello di aiutare a produrre prodotti in legno sostenibili ea prezzi competitivi. Il settore dei pannelli in legno è il maggiore utilizzatore di resine di formaldeide princi-palmente urea-formaldeide (UF), melami-na-formaldeide (MF) e fenolo-formaldeide (PF) - e rappresenta circa i due terzi della formaldeide prodotta nell’UE (3.5Mt ).La collaborazione tra la European Panel Federation (EPF) e Formacare, l’Associazi-one dei produttori europei di formaldeide e derivati,- un gruppo settoriale dell’European Chemical Industry Association (CEFIC) è un eccellente caso di studio della catena del valore che opera insieme costruttivamente su questioni di interesse comune. A differenza di molti altri prodotti chim-ici, dove la collaborazione tra produttori e utilizzatori a valle è spesso limitata, EPF e Formacare lavorano fianco a fianco per promuovere l’uso sicuro e sostenibile della formaldeide. Mentre le due organizzazioni condividono alcune aziende associate che producono sia prodotti chimici che pannel-li in legno, ciò non garantisce automatica-mente un approccio coerente all’impegno con le autorità di regolamentazione e la co-munità scientifica.

Formaldehyde has been part of our everyday lives for a very long time. It was one of the first chemicals to be synthetized and mass-produced in the late 19th century- when industry took inspiration from formaldehyde’s role as a natural building block in forests, foods and the human body to produce glues, resins, plastics and coating along with many other applications. One of the most important uses of formaldehyde is to help produce sustainable and competitively priced wood products. The wood panel sector is the largest user of formaldehyde resins - mostly Urea-Formaldehyde (UF), Melamine-Formaldehyde (MF) and Phenol-Formaldehyde (PF) – and accounts for about two thirds of the formaldehyde produced in the EU (3.5Mt). The collaboration between the European Panel Federation (EPF) and Formacare, the Association of European Producers of Formaldehyde and Derivatives - a sector group of the European Chemical Industry Association (CEFIC) – is an excellent case study of value chain working together constructively on issues of common interest. Unlike in the case of many other chemicals, where collaboration between producers and downstream users is often limited, EPF and Formacare work hand in hand to promote the safe and sustainable use of formaldehyde. While the two organizations share some member companies who produce both chemicals and wood panels, this does not automatically guarantee a consistent approach to engagement with regulators and the scientific community. Coordination bodies like Formacare’s Advocacy Steering Team facilitate the alignment of agendas and

Working together with their respective networks, the chemicals and wood panel industry have been supporting the proposed emission values of 0.124mg/m³ initially proposed by ECHA: such values would ensure consumer protection while allowing the industry to continue to thrive in Europe. According to Mr. Gallacher “working together on a shared advocacy and scientific agenda brings substantial efficiency gains and allows for a two-way exchange of information that benefits both the value chain and our external stakeholders”. Ensuring exposure to formaldehyde as low as possible is of paramount importance to both EPF and Formacare. As a case in point, both parties have launched voluntary agreements to implement workplace safety measures well in advance of new EU rules on occupational exposure limits (OELs) for formaldehyde coming into force in 2021. The two agreements are clear testimony to a dynamic, responsible value chain driven by shared principles of sustainability, safety and transparency in our operations.

Kilkenny, has invested € 59 million/€ for a new OSB factory.Medite SmartPly employs over 160 people directly at the Kilkenny plant with a further 200 jobs supported indirectly in the wider community. The Medite-SmartPly plant uses trees, harvested mainly in the Southern part of the country, to manufacture innovative and sustainable wood products used in construction, flooring and furniture sectors.
