The diamond

Colour grading is a fundamental element of diamond quality. Although many diamonds could appear colour less to the untrained eye, most stones have a colour veer ing slightly toward yellow or brown. Less colour means a higher value and rar ity. The value of a diamond can vary considerably with even the slightest increase of yellow or brown in the colour spectrum. Bulgar i diamonds are classif ied according to the GIA standards that rate diamonds on a scale from D to Z, in descending order. Bulgar i diamonds only belong to the top range, from D to H. Nature also of fers us ‘ fancy colour diamonds’ such as yellow, green, blue and pink . Fancy colour diamonds are rare, precious gems that combine the transparency, f ire , spark le and durabili ty of diamonds with the vividness of coloured gemstones.

A diamond is f lawless if no ‘ inclusions’, or f laws, are detectable at 10x magnif ication. The number, position, type, colour and prominence of internal inclusions and the ex ternal aspects of a diamond are what determine its clar ity grade. Truly f lawless diamonds are ex tremely rare. Most diamonds have natural inclusions that are invisible to the naked eye and do not af fect their beauty. Diamond clar ity is classif ied according to the GIA standard, on a scale of 11 grades . Bulgar i only selects diamonds belonging to the top quality grades ranging from IF to VS, meaning not even the smallest inclusion will be visible to the naked eye. Bulgar i ’s gemmological lab carefully examines every single diamond to ensure conformity with its renowned, r igorous standards .

colour clariTy

The cut is of utmost impor tance for enhancing a diamond’s abili ty to capture and ref lect l ight . A well-cut diamond is best able to reveal i ts splendour and br il l iance. A br il l iant-cut diamond must have 58 carefully aligned facets (57 if the culet is excluded). To achieve per fection, the diamond cut ter uses a precise reciprocal geometr ic ratio to sk ilfully determine every facet and angle of the stone. This same meticulous at tention to symmetry, polish and propor tion contr ibutes to the overall appearance of a cut diamond. As a result , the diamond becomes a ver itable light-ref lecting mirror, obtaining maximum value, br il l iance and dispersion. Only stones cut with correct propor tions and an exacting f inish become Bulgar i diamonds. Bulgar i uses the GIA cut scale, which ranges from Excellent to Poor. For single round diamonds set into Br idal Collection jewels , Bulgar i only selects stones with the highest cut grades , from Excellent to Very Good.At the mention of the word diamond, people usually imagine a round, br il l iant cut . However, the world’s most famous diamonds are almost always in a distinctive fancy shape. Bulgar i ’s jewellery collection features several fancy shape diamonds, including emerald, pear, oval and hear t . A Bulgar i fancy shape stone must not only be symmetr ical , but also have ‘visual appeal ’: i t has to be gracefully elegant and at tractive. The carat is the unit of weight used for a diamond. The size of a diamond can directly increase its value and rar ity, but size is less impor tant if the diamond is not paired with a good grade of colour and clar ity, or if i t is not cut to proper propor tions . Indeed, two stones with the same carat weight may have very dif ferent values depending on their other character is tics . Never theless , size does indeed contr ibute to increased value, as large stones are rarer than small ones . Exper t gemmologists at Bulgar i ’s in-house gemmological laboratory analyse every diamond to ensure that each stone conforms to Bulgar i ’s high standards . With such care and at tention used to select the stones, Bulgar i diamonds are renowned for their exceptional quali ty and value. Bulgar i accompanies its collection of soli taire diamonds with a diamond cer tif icate from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) which fully descr ibes and authenticates its quali ty. The GIA is an independent institution and the world’s foremost author ity in diamond grading; a GIA cer tif icate guarantees an impar tial evaluation of Bulgar i diamonds. I t accompanies all Br idal Collection jewels carr ying a single stone weighing 0.18 ct or more.

The cerTificaTe

‘Conf lic t diamonds’ are diamonds il legally traded to fund conf lic ts , civil wars and human r ights abuses , a practice Bulgar i seeks to discourage. In 2000, an international cer tif ication agreement was reached, known as the Kimber ley Process Cer tif ication Scheme. According to the scheme, rough diamonds must now be accompanied by a government-validated cer tif icate stating they are non-conf lic t diamonds. The Kimber ley Process Cer tif ication Scheme has been adopted by the vast major ity of countr ies par ticipating in the project , including those of the European Union. To suppor t this ef for t , Bulgar i only buys polished diamonds, and works with carefully selected diamond suppliers based in countr ies that adhere to the Kimber ley Process .

In 2006, Bulgar i became a member of the Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices (CRJP), a non-prof it organisation that promotes responsible ethical , social , and environmental practices throughout the diamond and gold jewellery supply chain, from mining to retail . In December 2011, Bulgar i became a CRJP cer tif ied member by demonstrating responsible business practices that conform to the CRJP ’s standards throughout its entire jewellery supply chain.
