F4E PCDH Remote Review 2008

• PCDH V3 was distributed with the details of this meeting–Asking for comments / questions about PCDH and more general ITER-CODAC and I&C

–Detailed responses will be published and passed on to ITER-IO

• Layout of the document to improve clarity• Safety Systems• Human Factors• Suggestions about inclusion of other standards

• Some general comments and questions follow–To promote discussion now and in the parallel sessions

27/10/2008 - JW Farthing 3

Questions - 1

•F4E–Do the centres of excellence proposed by ITER-IO make sense?

–What is the best way to do it?–Timescales to set up?

• ITER–How will they work?

•Parallel sessions?

Questions – 2

PCDH• There are a large number of TBD’s in PCDH V3

–What are the plans for a more complete version?

• F4E–When does the first F4E plant system require the complete PCDH – contractually or technically?

–What can F4E do to help flesh out the TBD’s?

–Parallel sessions?

Questions – 3

Standardisation

• PCDH V3. “Final choices between competing candidate technologies are still outstanding”

– When will the selection of technologies be complete?– The first plasma is planned for 2018. Is it a mistake to select

the technologies so early?– Will it be possible to integrate new technologies?– What will be the process by which ITER-IO checks the I&C in

the plant systems – for non-conformities?

– How different will physics diagnostics be from more industrial-like plant systems? How many “special cases” will there be?

– Parallel sessions?

Questions - 4

For Industry• Do you agree with the strategy of the PCDH and

standardisation for Plant System I&C?– How many bids will there be for non-conformities against the

prescribed technologies?

• When it has been fleshed out will you be able to use the PCDH to build I&C for the plant systems?

• What is missing altogether?

• Parallel sessions?

Questions - 5

Obsolescence Management

• “Considering the life cycle of the Project (35 years) and the life cycle of the I&C components a specific chapter should cover the strategy to adopt in case of obsolescence. Either by storage or by successive evolutions”

– IEC 62402– Should there be a separate chapter on obsolescence?– Do we over-emphasise this problem?

• Parallel sessions?

27/10/2008 - JW Farthing 8

Questions - 6

• Plant system self-description–Referred to throughout the PCDH

–Can it work? –Is it too ambitious?–Are there similar examples already adopted in industry or elsewhere?

–Parallel sessions?

Questions – 7

ITER-CODAC

• What are the timescales for the procurement of the high-level ITER-CODAC systems?

– Is there a procurement plan?– When will the hardware selection take place?– Commercial or Open Source software?– Parallel sessions?

• Any comments about the Plant System Host and mini-CODAC or other parts of ITER-CODAC?

• Parallel sessions?

27/10/2008 - JW Farthing 10

Questions – 8

• CODAC, Interlocks, Safety– What will be the mix between these three tiers?– How will decisions be made for each plant system?– How will interlocks between plant systems delivered by

different DA’s be handled?

– Parallel sessions?

27/10/2008 - JW Farthing 11

Questions – 9

• The PCDH references several other documents– RD1: Project Requirements, RD2: Plant Description Document,

RD5: Electrical Design Handbook, RD9: ITER Quality Assurance Program, GD1: CODAC Conceptual Design Document etc

–How to get access to these documents?–Does F4E need to make them available to all EU interested parties or will ITER give ~public access?
