  • 91PIERRE LE ROMAIN MIGNARD(French, 1612-1695)PORTRAIT OF THE DUCHESS OF TUSCANY oil on canvas, framed, signed & dated lower right, 1667 H40 W29 1/2$5,000-8,000Provenance: South Carolina private collection

Other Notes: Pierre Le Romain Mignard was a French painter, the elder brother ofthe much better-known Pierre Mignard. He executed much of his work inProvence; his style was colder and drier than that of his brother, but showed thesame attention to drawing. His compositions tended to be based on Italian models. The French painter was the rival of Le Brun but an exponent of the sameAcademic theories. Like Le Brun he was a pupil of Vouet, but he went to Rome in1636 and remained there until 1657, forming his style on the approved models ofCarracci, Domenichino and Poussin. He returned to Paris on the orders of LouisXIV and decorated the dome of the Val-de-Grace (1663), but his principal impor-tance was as portrait painter to the Court. He revived the earlier Italian type ofallegorical portrait, and a good example is the MARQUISE DE SEIGNELAY ASTHETIS (1691, London, National Gallery). He was strongly opposed to the Academie Royale and, in spite of his own stylisticorigins, championed the Venetian or colourist school; this, however, was proba-bly only to oppose Le Brun. When Le Brun died in 1690 Mignard was at oncemade premier peintre, and, on the Kings orders, the Academy appointedMignard an Associate, Member, Rector, Director and Chancellor of the body hehad so long opposed. His paintings can be found in the Royal Collection, Windsor, Honolulu, Londonand many French museums.
