From the PresidentDear OPA Members:

I am very pleased to extend to you a personal invitation to attend OPA’s 28th National Convention in Steamboat Springs, Colorado! Now is the time to take advantage of our early bird registration rate as outlined in the enclosed brochure.

We are very excited to begin this year’s convention with the “Colorado Rocky Mountain High” Wet Paint Competition & Sale; a 3-day event that will offer convention attendees the opportunity to win awards in two categories: plein air and studio. A minimum of $10,000 in cash and/or merchandise will be awarded. Paintings will be hung at the Steamboat Springs Art Depot and award winners will be announced at OPA’s Awards and Recognition Ceremony on Friday evening, June 1, 2018. And as if that weren’t enough the top place winner in each category will earn an automatic spot in the 2019 National Exhibition!

We’ve also incorporated some new features in this year’s educational program beginning with a roundtable discussion offering attendees the opportunity to explore key issues and engage in meaningful dialogue. Attendees will also enjoy visiting exhibitors who will have artists demonstrating their latest products during a special lunch session. In addition, we are thrilled to have Jill Carver and Skip Whitcomb join forces during our first on stage critique session.

For those of you interested in watching some of today’s best artists demonstrate their impressive painting skills – this is the place and time! Friday’s events kick off with this year’s Distinguished Artist Skip Whitcomb followed on Saturday by a demonstration by Juror of Awards and Master Signature artist Craig Tennant. On Sunday, attendees can learn from five of OPA’s most talented artists: Nancy Boren OPA, Mostafa Keyhani OPA, Rob Rey OPA, Jason Sacran, and David Santillanes OPA. Plus, presentations by Jill Carver, Blick Art Materials Joe Gyurcsak, and a one-on-one interview with Skip Whitcomb.

Finally, I would be remiss not to mention our beautiful venues beginning with the City of Steamboat Springs itself. You will be overwhelmed by the abundance of natural beauty that surrounds this quaint mountain town. Our headquarters hotel is the Sheraton Grand which has fantastic convention space and beautiful, well-appointed rooms. And, of course nothing can compare to the newly renovated and stunning Steamboat Springs Art Museum, home to this year’s 27th National Exhibition.

Whether you are new to painting or a seasoned expert – please join us for this special event where you will come away inspired and ready to take your painting to the next level.

Sincerely,

John Michael Carter OPAM President

After attending the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, Skip returned to Colorado where he connected with the Denver group, a loosely-affiliated but highly energetic group of artists. This fortuitous encounter was instrumental in his ability to establish himself as a successful artist at a young age.

His work can also be found in several public and private collections including Chase Bank, Colorado Springs; Merrill Lynch, New York; Solomon Smith Barney, WY; State of Wyoming; Senator and Mrs. Alan K. Simpson; Senator John Warner; and the Santa Fe Railroad permanent collection, Chicago, IL.

He has won numerous awards including the Grand Award Pastel Journal International Exhibit, 2000; Artists Choice Award, National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson, Wyoming 1991 and 2000; Artists Choice Award, Buffalo Bill Historical Center and Museum, Cody, Wyoming 1998 and 2000; Featured Artist, Coors Western Art Exhibition, Denver CO, 2009; Award of Excellence, Western Rendezvous of Art, Helena MT, 2009; Artists Choice, Coors Western Art Exhibition, Denver CO, 2011; and the Donald Teague Memorial Award-Best Work on Paper, Prix de West Exhibition, Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center, Oklahoma City OK, 2017.

9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Group Demonstrations

Location: The Steamboat Grand – Korbel Ballroom

Nancy Boren OPA received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Abilene Christian University and cites the influence of notable traditional painters such as Sargent, Sorolla and Fechin. Boren’s painting, “Aloft in the Western Sky,” is part of the permanent collection of the Booth Museum of Western Art in Cartersville, GA. She has also exhibited at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, the Gilcrease Museum, The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City, and the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Show at the National Arts Club, NY. Her paintings were used in the feature film “9 Months” and the ABC TV show “The Benefactor.” She was one of five finalists in the state of Texas for the design of the Texas Quarter in 2004.

Mostafa Keyhani OPA was encouraged by one of his teachers to pursue his artistic talents. As a result, he became devoted to painting and went on to study art at Tehran and Dusseldorf Universities after already receiving diplomas in biology and anatomy. Upon completion of these studies, he spent seven years traveling through Germany and France, all the while developing his technique and style. He eventually became a Canadian citizen, where he lives today. His paintings convey the lively spirit of European street scenes, scenic landscapes and the beauty of floral still-lifes.

Rob Rey OPA is originally from a suburb north of Chicago. Rob hiked across New England covering 1,100 miles along the Appalachian Trail before going on to study at the Rhode Island School of Design where he graduated with a BFA in Illustration. Rob now resides in Denver, Colorado. His foremost passion is learning of any kind. Rob’s interests are frequently peaked by both natural sciences like astronomy and physics as well as social sciences like psychology and sociology. These interests commonly influence his work, as do a multitude of inspiring artists from classical art to golden age illustration and contemporary representational art. Through his love affair with the medium of paint, he strives to make pictures that are not only beautiful but thought-provoking as well.

Jason Sacran is an artist/painter living in Arkansas. He has been invited to many exhibitions and awarded many times by such organizations as the Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionists Society among others. Some of Jason’s recent awards include Best of Show awards in the: 2016 Maui Plein Air Invitational, 2016 Plein Air Rockies, 2015 Plein Air Easton, 2015 Olmsted Plein Air Invitational, 2015 Easels in Frederick and 2014 Door County Plein Air. Jason has also had featured articles with publications such as Southwest Art Magazine, International Artist, Artist Magazine, and Plein Air Magazine.

David Santillanes OPA began painting shortly after graduating from Colorado State University with a degree in Graphic Design. But he points to his first plein air painting excursion as the true beginnings of his development as a painter where direct observation allowed for a more precise rendering of color, light and atmosphere. And although studying the physical aspects of nature is important, it isn’t the only reason Dave paints outdoors. He says, “the sensory experience of being there is equally important.”

Dave’s passion for painting has led to many recent awards including First Place in the Landscape Category at the 12th annual International ARC Salon, the William Schultz Memorial Award in Oils at the 18th National American Impressionist Society Show and the Landscape Award of Excellence at the 25th National Oil Painters of America Show. He has also won numerous awards for his plein air work and has been featured in both Plein Air and Southwest Art Magazines.
