ANNUAL BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS St. Francis of Assisi was known for his gentle spirituality and love for animals. It is customary to celebrate the Blessing of the Animals in memory of St. Francis at this time of year. On Monday, October 7, we

will have a Blessing of the Animals here at St. Joan of Arc Church in the parking lot by the entrance to the Parish Center at 3:30pm. Bring your dogs, cats, birds, horses, ferrets, fish . . . whatever the case may be. All are welcome! LOWER CAPE OUTREACH COUNCIL You can make a difference! Based on the belief that no one should be without food, clothing, shelter and access to essential healthcare and social services, Lower Cape Outreach Council (LCOC) has a long history of providing a unique combination of timely financial, food, clothing, job coaching and mentoring services, assisting 326 households in the Town of Orleans in 2018. We invite you to become a part of the team of dedicated volunteers who help support programs with their time and talent. We currently need food pantry volunteers to welcome and assist clients. Please contact LCOC at 508-240-0694 or stop by our office at 19 Brewster Cross Road, or visit our website at www.lcoutreach.org. JOB OPENING AT OUR LADY OF THE CAPE Our Lady of the Cape Parish, Brewster, is searching for a Direction of Religious Education, a full-time, 12 months a year position. The candidate must be a practicing Catholic, in good standing with the Church and must have the educational and administrative skills to organize and manage the entire program for Kindergarten through Grade 10, as well as a comprehensive knowledge of Roman Catholic teachings, religious rites, ceremonies and traditions. He/she must be a person of prayer, committed to the authentic teaching of the Catholic faith. Contact Fr. William Kaliyadan, Pastor at [email protected], or call 508-737-8103. We will look at Scripture and Church teaching and share practical experience and application on the seven themes: the dignity of the human person; the call to family, community; human rights and responsibilities; the option for the poor and vulnerable; the dignity of work and the rights of workers; solidarity; and care for God’s creation. Come for all or as many as you can. Contact Kathy at [email protected], or call 508-385-3252.

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD The Bishops of Massachusetts recently released a state-ment expressing their strong opposition to two proposed bills that would expand abortion in Massachusetts. Bishop da Cunha has asked that it be shared with parish-ioners to help call attention to the extreme provisions of this legislation and the radical consequences that would follow. The proposed legislation, HB 3320 and SB 1209, would: Allow abortions during the nine months of preg-

nancy for virtually any reason. Eliminate any requirements that abortions be per-

formed in a hospital. Eliminate the requirement that provides medical

care to a child who survives an abortion attempt. Eliminate the requirement that a minor under the

age of 18 have the consent of a parent, guardian or the courts.

Provide state funding for women who cannot af-ford the procedure.

In their statement, the Bishops “call on our elected offi-cials to carefully consider the consequences that the bills would bring...” and they “urge all people of good will, regardless of what faith they practice, to vigorously op-pose these extreme measures.” Bishop da Cunha is ap-pealing to all members of the Diocese to contact their state legislators. The Massachusetts Catholic Conference has resources available on its website at www.macatholic.org. Copies of the full Bishops State-ment are at the main entrance of the church.

NEW BEGINNINGS Are you interested in deepening your spirituality? Has life gotten in the way of ser ious participation in your spiritual growth? Are you inspired to renew and review your knowledge of Jesus’ teachings and the rich treasure of our

Catholic Faith traditions? Then the intimate faith-sharing format of RCIA might be for you. Even though the primary purpose of RCIA is for the discernment of and preparation of anyone who is considering becoming a Catholic, it also offers an opportunity for Catholic seekers to share their faith and support one another within a small community framework. If you are interested in becoming Catholic or if you are Catholic and simply want to reconnect with the Church in a small and hospitable forum, call Judy Burt Walker in the Faith Formation Office at 508-255-1257, or Fr. Bill in the Rectory at 508-255-0170.

FRIENDLY REMINDERS Faith Formation is under way and we are so grateful to our students, families, catechists and volunteers for the wonderful start to our school year. Below are a few friendly reminders: If you have not yet returned your registration form,

please stop by the office this Monday, October 7. It is important that we have the most up-to-date and accurate information on file. Thank you.

For the afternoon session regarding dismissal: The catechists instruct their students to wait in the classrooms for their parents or guardians to meet them. Not only is this for safety purposes, but it offers an opportunity for the teachers to meet the parents/guardians. Thank you.

NOT TOO LATE Even though Faith Formation is in session, it’s not too late for your child to join us for the 2019-20 school year. If you are new to the Parish, or have a kindergartener or first grader who you would like to have attend religious education, please stop by the Faith Formation Office located in the Parish Center to complete an application, or call the office at 508-255-1257. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LIVING ROSARY AT HOLY REDEEMER The Holy Redeemer Women’s Club invites everyone to participate in a Living Rosary on Wednesday, October 16, at 6:30pm at Holy Redeemer Church, 57 Highland Ave., Chatham. If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in

the sea,’ and it would obey you.

A SMALL, BUT MIGHTY SMIDGE Within the husk of a very small seed lies an invisible potential. Today Jesus chooses the metaphor of one of the smallest seeds – the little mustard seed to describe the latent potency of even the tiniest ‘smidge’ of faith. The smallest glimmer of faith can help us endure, move forward, and eventually heal our brokenness, even when stretched to the limit by intolerable suffering, seemingly unheard prayer, or overwhelming doubt. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel, died a couple of years ago in the month of July. It was the same month chosen by Pope Francis to visit Auschwitz and pray amidst the piles of rubble that had once served as a death camp for countless men, women, and children. Wiesel described how he thought he had lost his faith on the night he arrived in this fearsome camp. Wiesel wrote that he “lost his faith in the flames burning the bodies of dead children in the pits”. “Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul, and turned my dreams to dust.” Fifty years later Elie Wiesel wrote again – a prayer for the Jewish New Year. It began: “Master of the Universe, let us make up – it is time. How long can we go on being angry? And what about my faith in you, Master of the Universe? I realize now that I never lost it, not even during the darkest hours of my life. I don’t know why I kept on whispering my daily prayers, and those reserved for Sabbath, and for the holidays, but I did recite them – often with my father, and, on Rosh Hashanah Eve, with hundreds of inmates at Auschwitz.” “Where were you, God of kindness, in Auschwitz? At one point I began wondering whether I was not unfair with you. After all, Auschwitz was not something that came down ready-made from heaven. It was conceived by men, implemented by men, staffed by men. Their aim was to destroy not only us, but you as well. Ought we not to think of your pain, too? Watching your children suffer at the hands of your other children, haven’t you also suffered?” The smidge of faith had not died. Faith – indestructible; powerful; and healing. Pope Francis left a short message in the guest book of Auschwitz – a cry for mercy, forgiveness and enduring faith. As Christians, we see in Jesus the God who walks with us; suffers with us; and struggles with us through conflict and pain to new life. Let us then, help each other water the seeds of faith especially when they seem but a tiny smidge!
