27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B 7th OCTOBER 2018

A very warm welcome to anyone visiting our Parish. It is good to have you with us.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about the Ipswich Catholic Community please visit our

parish website at www.ipswichcatholic.com We hope you enjoy your time in Ipswich. Please come again soon.

Dear Parishioners,

Welcome to a new month! I invite you to participate in the ‘24 HOURS OF JOY’ to be held at St Marys next Friday. We are living in very fragile times and we do need to centre ourselves in the Lord and be credible in our discipleship - one way of achieving this is through prayer. So I ask you to set aside some time next Friday to pray for yourself, your family, our Parish and indeed our Church. If you are not able to come to St Marys, please set aside a short time for prayer at home. Maybe what I share below might help ....

1. INTRODUCING "THE ROSARY OF FRANCIS & CLARE" for the month of October. Pope Francis has asked Catholics to pray that Catholics be strengthened in their faith, and I offer this very simple and creative format below:

So ... Here is a very simple "Franciscan" order of praying the Rosary, for those of you who love the Rosary and who desire to integrate your love of Franciscan spirituality to this traditional prayer form. It is titled "The Rosary of Francis and Clare" - containing traditional elements of the rosary, alongside some Franciscan prayers and charisms. This can be prayed individually or communally. The "mysteries" are areas of focus for the vocation and charisms of Francis and Clare, that, by following their example, desire to emulate in our lives.

So it is my prayer and hope that many of you may find this helpful in your prayer life.

What follows is the structure:

THE ROSARY OF FRANCIS AND CLARE.

OPENING

The Sign of the Cross Spoken/Sung Introit:

“Song Before the Cross” by St Francis Most High, Glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart. Give me right faith, sure hope, and perfect charity. Fill me with understanding and knowledge that I may fulfil your command.

First Bead (after the cross): The Lord’s Prayer Three Hail Mary’s Spoken/Sung Response: Repeat “Song Before the Cross”

THE FIVE MYSTERIES OF OUR VOCATION WITH FRANCIS & CLARE:

1. We follow Christ with Joyful Simplicity and Ongoing Discernment in Prayer

2. We act in Justice and Advocacy for the Poor and the Oppressed 3. We are Eager to Love 4. We care for the Earth and all Creatures 5. We engage in Courageous Peacemaking

(For each decade, the following pattern is followed) Announcement of the Mystery Spoken/Sung Refrain: “My God and My All”. My God and My

All, how I long to love you, and give you my heart and soul.

Ten Hail Mary’s

CLOSING (after all 5 decades)

The Lord’s Prayer

The Peace Prayer of St. Francis Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred let me sow peace; where there is injury let me sow forgiveness;

where there is doubt let me know faith; where there is despair, let me give hope; where there is darkness let me give light;

where there is sadness let me give joy.

O Lord, grant that I may not try to be comforted but to comfort,

not try to be understood but to understand, not try to be loved but to love.

Because it is in giving that we receive, It is in forgiving that we are forgiven.

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Sign of Peace (If one is praying alone, the Sign of the Cross concludes the Rosary)

This week begins the works Synods of Bishops on Youth. The following prayer was used at the opening session this week (composed by Pope Francis) and I offer it for your use - let’s remember as we pray this prayer the young people of the Ipswich Catholic Community!

Lord Jesus, in journeying towards the Synod, your Church turns her attention to all the young people in the world. We pray that they might boldly take charge of their lives, aim for the most beautiful and profound things of life and always keep their hearts unencumbered.

Accompanied by wise and generous guides, help them respond to the call you make to each of them, to realize a proper plan of life and achieve happiness.

Keep their hearts open to dreaming great dreams and make them concerned for the good of others.

Like the Beloved Disciple, may they stand at the foot of the Cross, to receive your Mother as a gift from You. May they be witnesses to your Resurrection and be aware that you are at their side as they joyously proclaim you as Lord. Amen. (Pope Francis)

Let’s continue to pray for each other. Happy feast of St Francis. Stephen ofm

PLENARY COUNCIL 2020 MEETINGS: In November we are going to start with four Plenary meetings. We invite you to join us for sessions of engagement and rich dialogue. Come to any of the following:

… What’s happening in the Ipswich Catholic Community ...

ADVENT is just around the corner - Have you got any ideas or would like to be involved in Advent Preparation? Please come to a meeting for all of the Ipswich Catholic Community at St Mary’s Office on Wednesday 10th October at 7.00pm.

INSIGHTS ON PARISH RENEWAL AND THE PROCLAIM CONFERENCE, (part 6 continues): Building on the Second Vatican Council, Pope Francis calls us to the renewal of our parishes and communities. What is said below of parishes is meant to apply as well to all Eucharistic communities in our archdiocese, including Aboriginal and multicultural communities. It also applies to parish schools and to other Catholic schools in ways that are appropriate to their different contexts.

The parish witnesses to God’s love for all the creatures of Earth: When the community gathers for Eucharist, we bring the whole creation with us. We pray at the beginning of the Third Eucharistic Prayer - “All you have created rightly gives you praise.” Pope Francis says: “Joined to the incarnate Son, present in the Eucharist, the whole cosmos gives thanks to God. Indeed the Eucharist itself is an act of cosmic love” (Laudato Si’, par. 236). He tells us that we are all called to ecological conversion (Laudato Si’, par, 217), and this is a challenge in our parish life.

School and parish can participate together in this conversion, and witness to it, in their use of resources, like water and electricity, and in many other ways, such as by using solar power, recycling, supporting community gardens and tree planting.

Dear Parishioners, … “I will follow you wherever you go" (Luke 9:58).

To visit the Italian city of Assisi is to know the difference between being a tourist and pilgrim. The preserved sites of the life of the 13th century saint draw the visitor into an encounter with this extraordinary individual who was determined to follow Jesus in a radical and almost literal way. St. Francis uncovered the mystery of Christ in his brief life, and gives us a way to follow a Jesus in a credible way. In Francis, Jesus was again fully visible.

St. Francis was called in an encounter with an image of the crucified Christ hanging in the sanctuary of an abandoned and broken down church, saying to him, " Repair my church." In his fervent idealism, the young Francis first thought he was to restore the physical building, but soon realized that Jesus was asking him to rekindle the radical gospel of poverty and peacemaking in a church corrupted by wealth and power.

The example of his simple life, compassion for the poor and mercy for all caught on among the young people of his time, creating a flood of vocations into the mendicant orders. The papacy rushed to get these new orders of uncloistered, itinerant preachers and servants under ecclesiastical control, recognizing that a fundamental shift in culture and perception was taking place that would eventually open the door to the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. A feudal and monastic model of centralized control could no longer contain society.

Pope Francis has recovered all of the ideals espoused by St. Francis by taking his name: The call for a church of the poor for the poor, the care of our common home, the Earth, and the demand for justice and peace as the only way the world can go forward. The Pope has also lived in the spirit of St. Francis by his simplicity, joy and compassion. We will honour and celebrate the feast of this great saint for our time by doing the same.

Some parishioners have asked me to consider leading a group from the Ipswich Catholic Community to Assisi. I am considering September 2020 for three weeks. Depart Brisbane to Rome for a week and then a week in Assisi, onto Padua and Venice and back home. We would celebrate the feast of St Francis in Assisi. Costs would be kept to a minimum- (well under $4000) - this is a time to consider, time to save and might be the time of your life! Contact Fr Stephen or leave a message in the Parish Office to express your interest. (an expression of interest is not a commitment, but will help to consider if such a venture is viable and affordable). Happy feast of St Francis. Stephen ofm

Diarmund is a husband, father and teacher and brings with him a variety of life experiences in which his faith is central in all his aspects of his vocation to his family and work. It is sure to be a great morning and an opportunity to catch up with past acquaintances or to meet a new friend. You can book your place at the breakfast by phoning the Parish Office on 3281 2133. Please RSVP by Wednesday 24th October for catering purposes.

CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD: This week we welcome the children back for term 4 to the Atrium. For those who do not know what this special ministry entails, it is a formation process for young children that prepares them for life in the Church. The focus of this ministry is scripture and liturgy with sensorial materials to emphasise the essential moments of scripture and liturgy.

The word Atrium was chosen because it describes the place where the early Christians would meet to prepare for their initiation into the Church. We would describe this space as child orientated that is a place of activity and prayer for the youngest of our parish communities. Sessions are offered on Monday afternoon from 3.00pm to 5.00pm and the same on Tuesday afternoon.

The Atrium is housed in a small room under the early years classrooms at St Mary’s Primary School. Children may begin as young as three years of age through to 12 years.

For further enquiries please contact Bernadette McAndrew on 3281 2133 at the Parish Office.
