Digital ripping, downloading and storage of music collections is fast becoming the normal way listeners are accessing their music. The Naim NDS streamer delivers

music that lives, breathes and communicates all the emotions that the artist intended. It also opens up the world

of high-resolution audio and internet radio.

You are welcome to come in and have a listen, meet Chris, and discuss anything regarding this

new technology or hi fi in general.

Chris Murphy, the New Zealand Naim distributor will be instore to demonstrate Naim’s new top of the range network streamer, the NDS.

Stoke teen to open Christmas in the ParkChristmas has come four months early for teenage sing-ing sensation Hana Tava with the 13 year old set to perform in front of 100,000 people at Coca Cola Christmas in the Park Christchurch.Hana was one of more than 200 performers auditioning for a spot at Christmas in the Park. She sang ‘All I want for Christmas is you’, and the judges were impressed, put-ting her through to the next round of auditions.Earlier this month there was a meeting with the Christ-mas in the Park organisers, which confirmed she would sing ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’ as the opening number on the night, with two other performers. But the downside for Hana,

who is the lead singer of high school band Fire Without Per-mit, is that her fellow band members will have to watch from their television screens after they initially entered to-gether to cement the role. “Ja-cob [King] from the band put us forward, but they asked if they could have me instead,” says Hana. “But they’ve been really supportive. When I told the band I was into the audi-tions they knew that I would make it.”Hana says she will be nervous but will have her entire family in Christchurch supporting her. Because she is singing the opening number, it was likely Hana’s performance would also be screened live on televi-sion. Coca Cola Christmas in the Park Christchurch will be held at Hagley Park on No-vember 24.

Salisbury School is set to close at the end of the year, in favour of a co-educational residential fa-cility based in Christchurch. The decision was announced yesterday after-noon and comes despite months of protest and petitions against the school’s closure. But it appears the board, former students and staff are ready for a fight and will continue to oppose the decision.Salisbury School board chairperson Helen Mc-Donnell has labelled the announcement to close New Zealand’s only residential special school for girls with in-tellectual impairment as “disappointing” and questioned the “deeply concerning” decision to make such a facility co-educational. “Our primary concern has always been, and will continue to be, the welfare of the students who need Salisbury School – both now and in the future,” says Helen. “Many parents come to us because their daughters have a proven history of failure in mainstream schooling – and they are at risk in a co-educational environment.”Salisbury School’s 62 full time equivalent staff, many of whom now face redundancy, were told of the decision at a special meeting held at 2pm with the announcement delivered just before

5pm. Helen disagreed with the Ministry of Education’s desire to place schools closer to where the girls are from, instead suggesting that they could eas-ily move out of town in the future. “Girls currently travel from all over the coun-try to attend Salisbury, and many would still be

required to do so for the North Island and Christchurch facilities. What’s most important is that the school they arrive at is a safe envi-ronment for them.”Salisbury School has a notional roll of 80, this means it is funded to accommodate for the learning and living needs of up to 80 girls each year. The Ministry has al-lowed 28 days for the boards of the affected

schools to respond with any final reasons they should not be closed. Helen says the school in-tends to take full advantage of this opportunity. The announcement comes just weeks after the Ministry of Education opened the region’s first Maori immersion school at the cost of $4 million right next door.Salisbury School was set to reach its centenary in two years time.Other schools that faced potential closure are Westbridge Residential School in West Auck-land, Halswell Residential College and McKen-zie Residential School.

nEw ownErS for robbiE’S: Robbie’s Bar & Bistro in Richmond has new owners. Craig Harrington has taken over the lease of the bar, by the lights in Richmond, and has plans to make several changes including to the menu and decor. The franchise owner of Robbie’s has been holding the lease for the past few months after it was relinquished by its former owners.

DAD’S DAY: The Nelson Parent’s Centre is hosting a morning for dads and their babies to help celebrate Father’s Day, with no mums allowed. Lee Corlett of Sporting Initiatives Nelson will show dads what sort of play is good with babies through to tod-dlers. It’s at the Lodge Rooms, 107 Nile St.

A painting depicting a ruined Christch-urch Cathedral after last year’s deadly earthquake has been stolen from our own iconic cathedral. The painting was donated to the Nelson Cathedral for visitors to ad-mire and was dis-played deep within the cathedral when it was stolen one Sunday afternoon. The robbery has forced the cathedral to install security cameras to avoid any more thefts.Dean Nick Kirk says the robbery was a concern because they like to leave the cathe-dral open for people to

come in and enjoy.“We realise that the world is changing so we’ve installed a camera but the place is

open and everything is here on trust and really most people respect the place and treat it as a place of prayer, so for some-one to abuse that is concerning.”

The original painting measures 50cm x 40cm and was gifted to the cathedral. It is valued at about $450.Anyone with informa-tion about the painting’s whereabouts should con-tact police on 546 3840.Nick says he would be quite happy if he turned up one day and the paint-ing had been returned. “It was donated to us by parishioners here for peo-ple to pray and uphold the Christ Church so you sort of wonder why someone

would want to take that.”

Marina users asked to sign new contractsUsers of the Nelson Marina are being asked to sign new contracts to tighten up rules around debt collection, but Nelson City Council says it’s just a procedure and there has not been a problem around overdue accounts.Chief financial officer at NCC, Nikki Harrison, says the new contract is just standard and has nothing to do with the

change in management a few months ago. Debt collection was the reason cited for the change but Nikki says it hasn’t been a major concern.Currently around $7000 is more than three months overdue, with $1.1million collected annually. “It isn’t really a prob-lem, part of the new contracts is part of the wider changes around the marina.

But if people are well and truly overdue with their debt we have the ability to send it to a credit agency with them incurring the fees, not us,” she says. She says that some councillors also have a view that there shouldn’t be any over-due debt at the marina because there is a waiting list for people to get a berth down there.

For some, running and operating a business would be daunting at any age, but for these 16 and 17 year olds it has been a ball. On Saturday five local high schools, including Nayland College, Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls, set up shop at Nelson Markets as part of the Young Enterprise Scheme where they had to create their own business. There was a wide range of businesses across the schools that had great potential but more than that, the students learnt a lot about what it takes to run a good business. N a y l a n d College’s Eco M e m o r i e s c h i l d r e n ’ s craft kits were the winning business of the day, having won four free market stalls at Nelson Markets. Year 13 student, P h i l l i p a Oldham, CEO of Eco Memories, was really pleased with the win and is looking forward to the opportunity to make some more sales at the markets. For Phillipa and her team, Saturday’s experience brought more than just winning glory but was a real learning curve in terms of improving their business. “A lot of grandparents really liked them but a lot said that their grandchildren were too young

for some of the parts in the kits which we hadn’t really thought about, so that was a good learning experience,” says Phillipa. For Eco Memories, and many other students, their business dreams will not stop now the challenge is over. “Some of us are now going on to do business at university. It was a good taste of what we could expect in the real world when running a business,” she says. Robert Panzer, top of the south Youth Enterprise Scheme

c o o r d i n a t o r, was very impressed by all the schools on the day, but for Robert it’s the learning process for the students that is most significant.“One of the biggest learning experiences is getting them out of their comfort zones, dealing directly with potential clients and building their c o n f i d e n c e , that’s what it’s

all about.”The market stalls are the students second last step in their business journey, they now need to produce an annual report and to assess whether they are going to continue to run it, sell the business or close up shop. Now all businesses need to up the momentum of their business and add marks to their results which will be awarded at the regional awards ceremony on October 26.

Cupcakes help SPCACupcakes of all colours and sizes were being sold all over town yesterday as part of SPCA’s annual Cupcake Day. Thousands of people and businesses took part in the nationwide event, with all proceeds going back to SPCA centres across the country. Countdown on St Vincent St, Queen St Phar-macy, ANZ Bank, BNZ Bank and the SPCA Op Shop were just a few of the many businesses and stalls across Nelson.

In total SPCA have 47 cen-tres across New Zealand, with over 60,000 animals coming and going through-out the year that means a lot of attention, time and resources are needed. All of that requires a sig-nificant amount of money and the Cupcake Day is a chance for New Zealanders to give back to their local SPCA. The funds raised from yesterday will go towards helping local SPCA centres across the nation.

Before heading off to Fashion Island this morning, I took a quiet moment to stand out on my deck and take in the gorgeous morning. My garden is waking from its winter hibernation and camellia, rhododendrons and spring flowers are blooming with colour reminding me of an artist’s palette. Monarch butterflies are frolicking around the trees and the birds are singing songs to one another. A perfect start to my day. Heading in to the centre I stop at a few of the stores for a catch up with the teams and even here it is like winter has all but disappeared. The stores have bright spring colours gracing the windows, the phoenix palms are alive with birds and the atmosphere at Fashion Island is energized, awaiting the new day to begin. Spring dresses, pastel jeans, must have summer shoes, beautiful Italian tops, a lunch with a friend-spring definitely is in the air. I look forward to your visit and seeing you here at Fashion Island.

Nelson Lioness Club is back doing what it does best, hoping to fundraise $30,000 to go towards installing Go Zone gym equipment around the Tahunanui beach area. On Saturday afternoon the lionesses held a ‘Coffee, cake and curio’s afternoon where they invited local home business owners to take part. Lois Aitkenhead, the event’s coordinator, said the afternoon was just a little fun in the hope of raising some money and awareness. “It’s all very low key and all the people here today are going to give us ten per cent of their sales and other than that we’re only making our money from the coffee and cakes but we’re

hoping the communication with other groups and people will be the thing that will carry our fundraising forward,” says Lois. Noeline Strange was at the event selling Nutri-metics products giving guests free mini facials and hand pampers. She thought the afternoon was for a great cause. “It’s good to help the community. People don’t have a lot of money to go to the gym and I think there’s a real move for gyms outdoors,” Noeline says. So far they have raised $16,000 and hope to raise the extra $14,000 by Christmas and are hoping to start installing some equipment as soon as possible, pending council approval.

• Five container vessels, two over 200m long, a car carrier, twenty large fishing ves-sel movements about the port, the dredge completed her maintenance programme for 2012 and departed for Westport, two vessels for the slipway all kept the port busy this week.• I guess it’s all about perception. Perhaps if you work for a government department you might believe you can’t drown there-fore there is no need to wear a life jacket. The DoC operators who were sighted head-ing toward the boulder bank in a small in-flatable were definitely not of the medical variety. They were easily identified however by the branding they wear. Now perhaps these individuals all did have a lifejacket standing by in their little craft however my spotter suggests there wouldn’t have been room for them. Not that I am suggesting overloading was part of this display of... or that they were doing anything illegal. • Nor would I go so far as to suggest a com-plete lack of freeboard means they were simply lucky to make their destination let alone the return journey.• Anyway, anyone responsible for the well-being of our flora and fauna would be far more responsible than to put to sea without wearing a lifejacket, wouldn’t they?

Things to consider regarding relationship property and the inevitable. Most of us are fortunate enough to have a meaningful relationship with a life partner or spouse at some point. The complications of contemporary relationships and progressive laws in New Zealand mean that everyone should have an understanding of the principles of relationship property and estate law. It can get messy if you don’t structure your affairs properly.

OPTIONS ON DEATH UNDER THE PROPERTY RELATIONSHIPS ACT

Regardless of what you write into your will, your spouse or partner (and sometimes your ex-spouse or partner) will have the option to choose either their entitlement under the will (or as administered if you pass away intestate) or under the Property Relationships Act. These options are called “Option A” and “Option B.” If he or she chooses Option A then the Family Court may have a hearing to determine the scope of the relationship property and the surviving partner’s entitlement. The Act creates a presumption that property owned by the deceased is relationship property (unless successfully challenged). Where there is an Option A election, the surviving spouse/partner will not usually be entitled to any jointly owned property by survivorship. Where he/she chooses Option B the jointly owned property passes to the survivor and he or she also benefits under the will. If there is property that you do not wish to be subject to an Option A election steps can be taken to achieve this. This can be done with an agreement contracting out of the Property Relationships Act recording the property as separate property or by transferring that property to a trust and immediately gifting the debt off. The contracting out agreement will need independent advice. A contracting out agreement can be a very important tool in succession planning. While it takes a bit of discussion and thought, it’s much smarter and easier to do this before you marry or end up in a qualifying relationship.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WITH YOUR WILLIf you have your affairs in place so that you decrease the likelihood of an Option A election you might think that you can be reasonably assured your estate will be distributed in accordance with your will. It’s not quite as simple as this. Despite it being your will, the law allows certain people to apply to the Court if they are not provided for. These include your spouse/partner, children, grandchildren, and in certain circumstances your parents and step-children.

MORAL DUTIESThe first duty is to provide for your spouse/partner. You also have to provide for children, though not necessarily equally. Lawyers often talk of percentages of estates when attempting to safeguard against a claim for breach of moral duty. Ten to twenty percent of an estate per child seems to be accepted by the Courts as discharging this duty although it is up to the discretion of the Judge and depends significantly on the size of the estate. Things become particularly complicated where there are children of previous relationships and new spouses/partners (and even new

children). Imagine how complicated it can then get if in addition your ex-partner or ex-spouse also has an ability to elect under the Property Relationships Act! The best way to ensure that your will is not disputed is to provide for those people that you have a duty to. This will minimise the likelihood of a court hearing once you pass away. If you are not likely to have an estate that is subject to a Property Relationships Act election and simply have moral obligations to children and grandchildren then there is a way to avoid providing for those to whom you are morally obliged, if you are adamant that you do not want them to benefit from your estate. That is by gifting either directly to the intended beneficiary while you are still alive or by gifting the property you do not want forming part of your estate to a trust. Once that is done it is not readily reversible. Great caution should be exercised before such a decision is made.

Other Considerations:Life Interests can be a useful mechanism to ensure that everyone is happy if you pass away. Take for instance if you enter a new relationship later in life with no intention of having children, have adult children from an earlier relationship, own your own home going into the relationship which makes up the bulk of your estate, have not contracted out of the Act, and your new partner has not contributed to the purchase of the home that you are living in. In this scenario the house you are living in will have become the “family home” and be classified as relationship property. You want your estate to be divided equally amongst your children. Your partner can elect Option A and lawfully take 50% of your estate. You could provide your new partner with a life-interest in the property, the property then passing to your children when your partner passes away. This may be more appealing to them than selling up the property, taking half of it, and finding a new but more modest home to purchase. It may persuade them not to elect Option A. It will not prevent them from making that election but may cause them to stop and think seriously about Option B.

ConclusionEstate and succession planning is increasingly complicated by changes in the law (most recently the abolition of gift duty). It is best to get thorough and sound advice when considering how to structure things.

Work to repair slips on Poynters Crescent start-ed last week, signalling further progress since last December's slips.Mud and dirt blocked access to and from the road, which is off Rocks Rd, until late last week with work expected to continue in the area this week.It is the latest in the long list of clean up jobs Nelson City Council has been working on since heavy rain caused slips and flooding around Nel-son last year.

News from NelsoN Host lioN’s DeN

Ordinary people - Amazing things

Welcome to the August edition of The Lion’s Den – the fortnightly activities and message forum of Nelson Host Lions Club. The club is made up of men and women who share a concern for the wellbeing of others and value their community. For nearly 50 years the club has been meeting and supporting community events and interests. Some of our projects include the Lions Playground at Tahunanui, the fire station at Founder’s Park and the annual Nelson Host Lions and Southpine Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament will be held over the weekend of November 17-18. We would like to thank the applicants for funding (now closed) and will shortly be announcing the successful community organisations. Applications will open again July 2013. We are currently running a fertilizer drive with both liquid and dry product available for $5 and $10 respectively. Look out for the forms in your mail box. We also produce candy floss at a very reasonable rate for sale at school fairs etc. Various activities have recently been attended by club members. This included an address by one member detailing the journey of his family to New Zealand from Russia via Siberia, Australia and the Murchison goldfields. Nelson Host Lions meet for a meal and socializing every first and third Tuesday of the month at the Ocean Lodge. We invite anyone along who would like to share in the activities of the club and has an interest in helping others. Always remember, rest is rust.

The new coastal link from Nelson to Mapua will be one of the most scenic cycle rides in the entire coun-try according to project manager Stuart Hughes.Three separate contractors have been announced to begin work on completing the Nelson to Mapua segment of the Nelson-Tasman Great Taste Cycle Trail by Christmas. The current work will occur between Richmond and Mapua with a purpose built suspension bridge to be constructed across the Waimea River in the coming months.

This particular segment of the trail will not be open to the public until after an official opening ceremo-ny. A temporary bypass route will go across Queen St for a couple of months due to a “no construction” period in the resource consent while bird nesting occurs.Stuart says the timing of the Nelson to Mapua link should be ready for “when the masses” are here during summer. “It’s going to be tremendous. It’s going to be one of the most scenic in New Zealand. The great thing about it is it varies all the way.”

because we love animals but we didn’t really find anything exciting in the area where we could go to shop, look at beautiful animals, buy some accessories and just have some fun,” Jane said. One of the main things that Jane hopes to bring to Nelson is fun. A place where families have a chance to get up close and personal with animals and most of all receive some friendly advice. Pet Fever stock the popular Nutrience range of dog and cat

What do bright colours, guinea pigs, axolotls and a bunch of passionate pet lovers have in common? A new pet shop on Collingwood Street called Pet Fever. Pet Fever isn’t your average pet shop, yes it has cute animals and lots of fun toys for our pets to play with but what sets Pet Fever aside from the rest are their goals and values. Owner of Pet Fever, Jane Collins, is a passionate animal lover who’s aim is to open the doors to a place

“I know a lot about small animals and have pet dogs, Amy has two beautiful cats and Tom is very passionate about fish, so between all of us we cover a whole range of animals,” Jane said. Another significant aspect that makes Pet Fever stand out from the crowd is their willingness to help Nelson

SPCA.The SPCA are often overflowing with kittens and puppies that need a good home and that’s where Pet Fever step’s in. Providing that there is a demand for the animals in store, Pet Fever hope to help the SPCA buy buying kittens or puppies, which in turn would alleviate over crowding. “They are very keen to cooperate with us especially in the kitten season when they often overflow,” Jane said. Amy Costain, a Pet Fever employee, is equally passionate about animals as Jane is and couldn’t wait for the shop to open. Each day leading up to the opening felt like Christmas she said. “We’ve been opening the boxes everyday and we’re like ‘Oh my goodness look at this’, we’re very enthusiastic about all of our products…it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Amy said. Upon moving up to Nelson from earthquake stricken Christchurch the one thing that Jane and her family noticed was that there were no exciting pet stores around town.“We started looking around at pet shops

Nelson brothers Andrew and Chris Rodley started their time lapse camera business when they were amazed with how poor the quality of a security cam-era they bought online from the United States was. Ten years later they are ready to return to the US and show them how it’s done.Chris and Andrew designed the Snapit HD cameras, enlisted the help of their dad, who was handy with a soldering iron, and got to work, cobbling together a world-class time lapse camera with parts from various places. That tech-nology has seen them working with the biggest construction companies, government departments and tourism operators in the country, as well as sup-plying the technology for TV3’s weather department. All pay a weekly fee to have access to the information the cameras produce. The cameras are live so users can go on their website and view the cameras in real time. Users can also control which way the 360 degrees cameras point. The time lapse side of the cameras takes photos every ten minutes and records it. When they are put together over the course of an hour, a day or a year they provide quite startling images of how an area can change. But what started as a bit of fun, an excit-ing way to burn off their creative juices has this year turned into what could be one of Nelson’s most exciting tech companies. Recently it recorded 76,000 viewers in just one day looking at its camera at Lake Rotoiti and is now ready to launch overseas.Chris, a former Nelson College teacher and now chief executive of Snapit HD, launched their new generation cameras in Las Vegas earlier this year where one of the top designers of the i-Pad de-scribed their technology as “phenom-enal”. The excitement from Chris is conta-gious. “We had a crack at it and devel-

oped a product that is the current gen-eration camera which is located around New Zealand that dad has been building in the garage and really one of the best web cameras in the world as far as qual-ity.“It’s very exciting, I could still be teach-ing or I could be taking risks and doing exciting things. This is where the rubber meets the road," he says. The new technology started when a crucial part of their old camera was no longer available. The brothers sat down and started de-signing a new camera, better, and able to be produced faster than one a week by their overworked father in his garage. “We really had to start from scratch which led us to start developing our own camera. The previous one was cobbled together with bits and pieces, this one is completely built and designed from scratch,” says Chris.Among the many construction busi-nesses, tourism businesses and coun-cils that use the cameras is Auckland City Council which recently claimed it

saved $50,000 on one project because it didn’t have to visit

the site as much and was able to manage it externally at any time of the day, even from the phone. Tasman District Council also uses the cameras to monitor river quality and to monitor pollution, as well as for tourism. Ten cameras are situated locally includ-ing at Abel Tasman, Kaiteriteri, Lake Ro-toiti, Rainbow skifield, on Rocks Rd, at Port Nelson and above Richmond. Chris says the opportunities for Snapit HD are endless. “Really New Zealand is too small for us so we are eying Australia and then hope-fully targeting the United States.”But even when they do go global Chris says they will remain a Nelson company.“We haven’t taken any investment so we are quite protective of who we are and being a Nelson company is a big part of that. I want to see a culture in this city where people think ‘we can succeed from here’ and I want to be instrumen-tal in that cultural shift. That is just as exciting for us as the future of our little company.”To view some of the Snapit HD cameras around New Zealand, visit www.snap-ithd.com.

Brothers ready for global successAndrew Board

Nelson's Andrew and Chris Rodley own the Snapit HD cameras that are now all over New Zealand.

On the road e-cycles are great bikes to ride, apart from the extra weight, the riding experience is by the power assist. The ‘hawk’ has addition rugged dual suspension. The power is almost seamless coming in gently at about walking pace, then pushing hard, all without the slightest noise. If you haven’t experienced anything like this it’s a bit like sitting in a railway carriage pulled by a powerful electric train.Take your pedal to a new level…

ASB Nelson Pine has created history, coming back after los-ing two sets to claim its first ever VNZ Club Champion-ship – doing it all in front of a packed Trafalgar Centre on Saturday night.Nelson Pine captain and setter Patrick Shone says the win was a “dream” for the Colin Red-path-coached squad. The 2012 team included many former stars of the Nelson secondary school scene who had left the region to pursue further study. Patrick highlighted the impact

playing in front of friends and family had on the side. “We’ve managed to put a programme together where we can have those players from Wellington join with us, who are originally from Nelson,” he says. “That was one of the factors that made it the ultimate win, hav-ing those ex local players back playing in front of their friends and family.”The tournament final was an organisers’ dream with the hometown side facing defend-ing champions Sparta. The

South Auckland side had been thrashed by Nelson Pine 3-0 in pool play and the final started in a similar vein with Patrick and Ben “Sticky” Glue, who has recently signed a contract in Sweden, linking well to give the Pines a 25-19 first set win. Patrick says it was important to get off to a perfect start as Nel-son Pine looked to further dent the confidence of Sparta. “We knew we had their number, we demolished them in pool play but we always knew it was go-ing to be a final where anything could happen.”Sparta battled hard in the sec-ond and third sets, edging Nelson Pine 26-24 and 25-22 as the pendulum swung away from the home side.Knowing it was do-or-die, Nel-son Pine regained control to win the fourth set 25-16 and took the fixture to a deciding fifth set, Nelson Pine’s first of the tournament. Then from seven points down, Nelson Pine claimed the his-toric 16-14 win to end the tournament as champions for the first time. There were also plenty of in-dividual accolades for ASB Nelson Pine with libero Jack Redpath being named defend-er of the tournament, Charlie Stewart was named best passer of the tournament while Pat-rick was named best setter of the tournament to go with his tournament MVP award.

Although the netball season is drawing to a close there is still fun to be had for the Future Ferns.Nelson netball development officer, Trish Lowe is busy co-ordinating the final weeks of the season. Fun Ferns (or as Trish affection-ately calls them – my babies) is for 4 – 8 year olds and meets at Saxton Stadium on Tuesday afternoons. The players are put into groups ac-cording to their age and along with helpers they work through a stand-ard list of skills and drills. Once those are mastered, the drills are then expanded accordingly. They had their final this week with spe-cial activities organised by Marie Holland of Sport Tasman and were awarded certificates.Future Ferns is the next step up, with Year 4 and 5 being put through their paces at Saxton Courts on Wednesday afternoons. The teams take part in skills and drills as part of their warm up, which is followed by a game of two 12 minute periods.Trish supplies the coaches with the skills and

drills hand-outs and along with her invalu-able helper, Jane Gass is on hand to offer any advice. One-on-one sessions for coaches also happen regularly throughout the season.Once the players reach Year 6 they get to play “Saturday netball” when they have a normal warm up and play four 10 minute quarters. And like everyone knows, to play netball you need umpires. Trish has an enthusiastic

group of young players who turn up to umpire, often having to fit it in around playing their own game. This year 16 players have been se-lected to play as a curtain raiser to the Premier Grade final next Thurs-day. Trish asked for nominations

from coaches then had the difficult job of se-lecting the final 16. They have been training hard under Trish’s guidance over the past four weeks for their big game and are as keen as mustard to play at Saxton Stadium.Broadgreen Intermediate’s Caitlin Reid and Tehya Wilson along with Catherine Evaga of Waimea Intermediate are promising umpires who will control the game.

Jacks OPD Richmond is one game away from the perfect season – they have gone through the reg-ular season unbeaten and hope that form contin-ues in the club netball championship game this Thursday. Jacks has without a doubt been the in-form team throughout the season, and while they may not have always put out a consistent four quarters they usually gain a pass mark from coach, Ro-byn Leonard. Jacks have a wealth of experience within their ranks and have cool heads if the go-ing gets tough.Jacks OPD booked their berth for Thursday’s final with a convincing 61-32 win over an un-

der-strength Richmond. Richmond had another chance on Saturday however the fast finishing Waimea College got up to take the game 49-45 to deny the defending champions the opportunity. While Waimea’s focus may be firmly set towards the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament in Dunedin next week they have unfinished business in the elite competition in the final on Thursday night. The winner? Odds on favourite has to be Jacks however don’t discount the talent and youthful enthusiasm of the other green team. The game will be played at 7pm with Future Ferns curtain raiser at 6pm.

This Father’s DayWhen it comes to gift ideas, fathers have to fight back on Father’s Day according to local businessman Richard Dileva. “It is time to say no to socks, undies, unhealthy chocolates. Instead, it is time to em-brace the total fun world of fly your own helicop-ters” says Richard. In business for more than two years now, these remote helicop-ters really have taken the world by storm. Easy to fly due to their almost mind blowing onboard computers and the ongoing upgrading of the models now mean this year’s units can squirt water, lift objects, take HD quality movies and fly in four different directions. Some are coming out with single rotor technology. “All this is still combined with the just plain out fun of flying one around the lounge or kitchen and the reaction from family pets is hysterical, especially cats.”Also available now are the outdoor models, which have onboard levellers which help the pi-lot maintain straight and level flight even in a bit of a breeze. The thing that is pleasing most of his customers

is the build quality, even after lots of crashes most are still going as good as the day they were bought, so as Richard was keen to point out these are not cheap rubbish! And he has all the spare parts and service equipment right here in Richmond and is open most weekends. So if you would like to be your own pilot Rich-ard and his team are at Richmond Mall this weekend on Saturday and Sunday for demo flights and sales. Josh Mead of Hampden St School is the king amongst 20 different sporting dis-ciplines, after he kicked, ran and threw his way to the Sportsperson Award at Bridge Valley Adventure Centre’s Sportopia.Sportopia was contested by year five and six students from Auckland Point School, Hampden St School, Nelson Central School and Tapawera Area School.

All contestants competed in an ar-ray of different codes, rewarding the most versatile athletes. Sports varied between rugby league, kiwi tag, cage football, table tennis, chess, darts and many others. Each sport was played for 30 minutes, before teams and individu-als moved onto the next challenge.Sportopia went for three days with students being based at Bridge Valley for its entirety.

The Stirling Sports Supreme Team Award was won by three schools, Hampden St, Nelson Central and Tapawera while Auckland Point picked up the Sportsmanship Award.Pictured above left is Otis Baker, 10, of Auckland Point School as he takes aim during the shooting discipline.Above right is Amelia Abbott, 11, of Hampden St School in action. Photos and story by Phillip Rollo.

A Nayland College football player could have died had he played the final national secondary schools qualifier last month.Bjorn van Ginkel, a centre back in his final year of secondary school, was struck in the abdomen twice by an oncoming kick during a first division match for his club side QSP Richmond Athletic, ruptur-ing his spleen and causing internal bleeding. The 17 year old hit the ground in agony following the second shot. When the pain continued, he was taken to hospital by the father of one of his opponents. But a long wait in A&E resulted in misdiagnosis. Bjorn was told he was just suffering from muscle pain and sent home.Three days later and the young football player had not been to school. He couldn’t even leave his bed, because of the pain. So he decided to visit the local GP, who signed off a letter that he must un-dergo a CT scan at Nelson Hospi-tal. The CT scan showed that, Bjorn – who was contemplating kitting up for the school’s must win nationals qualifier against Nelson College the next day despite the pain – had ruptured his spleen and another

strike to the abdomen could have killed him. “If I had played in that game I could have died. I was bleeding in-ternally and if I had done anything else it could have got way worse, it could have ruptured the whole thing,” he says. “If I had played another game and anything had hit me there I would have died.”The three month recovery process is a patient one. Bjorn will miss the final rounds of the Nelson Pine Industries first division and also his last chance at winning the Lotto Premier New Zealand Secondary Schools Foot-ball Championship, having been a reserve in the squad that finished second place in 2010. Other than running on a tread-mill, all physical activity will be off-limits. “It will heal itself at my age but I had to get heaps of vaccinations so I don’t get sick. I’m definitely out for nationals. I’ve played my last game for Nayland, so that sucks," he says. Bjorn will now assist the coaching set up for the school’s nationals campaign but is hoping to return to the football pitch for the South Island Under-19 Championship in October, which is being held in Christchurch.

Titans down West CoastThe Tasman Titans put on a strong display in the second half to romp home 42-22 in the rugby league stronghold of the West Coast on Satur-day.Playing its first game of the season, Tasman got better as the game went on, scoring 30 second half points after leading just 14-12 at half time.Sam Hedges was in terrific form in the centres, with big defence smashing the confidence from the West Coast attack.Callum Smith and James Vailanu were also stand outs, with the much smaller West Coast forward pack struggling to contain them.Try scorers for Tasman were Simon Walker, Jesse Walker, Kaiapa Paul, Hayden Smith, James Vailanu, Sam Hedges and Ngatote Samuels with Hayden Smith kicking six conversions and a penalty. The Titans next game is against Canterbury at Trafalgar Park on September 8.
