FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners,
It is a great joy for me and indeed a pleasure to invite you once again to our Annual Fatima Pilgrimage that will take place every 13th day during the months of May through October. To accept this invitation is to hear the plea of our Blessed Mother to pray for the conversion of sinners, for peace and in reparation for the sins committed against her Immaculate Heart.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “Pilgrimages evoke our earthly journey toward heaven and are traditionally very special occasions for renewal in prayer. For pilgrims seeking living water, shrines are special places for living the forms of Christian prayer ‘in Church.’” [2691]
The word “pilgrimage” comes from the Latin peregrinus. The root word is per-ager, meaning “to travel a distance.” To be a pilgrim was to travel far, to go to a foreign country and sojourn there. Later, “pilgrimage” came to mean a journey to a holy place, with a religious purpose. (A. Solignac, Pélerinages, Introduction)
The origins of pilgrimages can be traced back even beyond Christian antiquity. Cultural anthropology has revealed three stages of pilgrimage: a. the victory over space, wherein pilgrims must break the routine of their daily life and journey elsewhere to change themselves from within; b. the contact with a sacred place by means of the embrace of a stone or statue, or by leaving a souvenir of one’s passing (a votive offering, inscriptions on the walls, etc.); c. the encounter with the divinity and the hereafter, which the holy place brings to mind. (Cf. A. Dupront, Pilgrimages and Sacred Places)
Now, in the Bible we frequently see the words “way, road, path.” The Semites used these words to describe mankind’s way of life, moral conduct, and religious bearing. Abraham, who left Ur in Chaldea, exemplifies the spiritual pilgrim on the way of perfection. Since Abraham, all men of faith have been pilgrims marching in the desert toward the Promised Land. We are the people of God on pilgrimage.
Particularly in this case, our Blessed Mother insistently asked the three children shepherds: “to come here for six months in succession, on the 13th day, at this same hour.” (Cf. Apparitions of May 13, June 13, July 13, August 13, September 13 and October 13, 1917)
So for us, the Fatima Pilgrimage is a reply to the request of our Lady, to set out on the “path of conversion” (penitential aspect of the pilgrimage), as she explained in the apparition of October 13, 1917: “They must amend their lives and ask for forgiveness of their sins. Do not offend the Lord our God anymore, because He is already much offended.” The Fatima Pilgrimage is also an act of faith, walking in the obscurity of the faith yet thirsty for the serenity of the contemplation of our Lady. It is a manifestation of joy: I rejoiced when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’ (Ps 122:1). It is an opportunity to give the due honor to our Lord and His Blessed Mother since we as pilgrims walk in order to go to the encounter of God by the hand of our Lady. It is also an occasion for apostolate drawing other closer to the Mother of God and her Son by the silent preaching we offer in the different manifestations of our love and veneration for our Lady. And finally, this pilgrimage helps us to grow in unity among us and with other pilgrims who walk and pray with us.
“To go on a pilgrim is to come out of one self to follow Christ.” (Fr. Buela, IVE Founder)
It is my ardent desire that this 2015 Fatima Pilgrimage will draw more and more souls to find solace in the Immaculate Heart of our Blessed Mother, and that she in turn, may find compassionate hearts that will love her tenderly and offer sacrifices in reparation for the many offenses committed against hers.
Today, also I commend all mothers to the special protection of our Lady, may she bless them and give them strength to ‘persevere in love’. Happy Mother’s Day!
Fr. Gustavo Nieto, IVE

“No” on SB 128
On Monday, May 11, SB 128 will be heard in the Senate Appropria ons Commi ee. State Senator Jim Beall serves on that commi ee and needs to hear from you, a cons tuent, that you do not support physician-assisted suicide and to vote NO on SB 128. Please contact Senator Jim Beall today and ask him to vote "NO" on SB 128.
Addi onal, informa on from the California Catholic Conference on Senate Bill 128 (SB 128):Once again, a bill to legalize the prac ce of assisted suicide has been introduced in the California State Legislature, in the form of Senate Bill 128 (SB 128).
This me, the bill has been announced in the Senate and is being authored by two democra c legislators: Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) and Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel)*.
Once more, this legisla on will be vigorously opposed by a diverse group of organiza ons represen ng doctors, people with disabili es, faith-based organiza ons, hospitals, hospice, minori es, the poor and the uninsured.
Catholic social teaching tells us that we are created in the image of God; therefore, we hold life to be sacred from concep on to natural death. We believe that we are stewards-not owners-of our lives.
As such, the California Catholic Conference remains steadfast in our opposi on to assisted suicide and any a empts to legalize it, and therefore, strongly opposes SB 128. Assisted suicide represents misguided public policy, which would have numerous detrimental implica ons for vulnerable people and impact our society nega vely.
Thank you for helping to inspire life by promo ng the dignity of each and every human life! Please contact me if I can be of assistance. For more informa on, please contact Chris ne Vincent, Coordinator of Human Dignity and Life Ministries at (408) 983-0135 or email [email protected].
