Dying to Live Dear brothers and sisters, John D. Rockefeller had become the world's only billionaire. But he was a miserable man; couldn't sleep, unloved, and needed bodyguards. Then at age 53 he was stricken with a rare disease. He lost all his hair, and his body became

shrunken. He was given a year or so to live. Rockefeller started thinking about eternal issues, and suddenly he began to change. He gave away his money to help churches and the poor. He established the Rockefeller Foundation, which has underwritten critical health research. His health improved, and contrary to the doctor's prediction, he lived to be 98. If man can undergo such a physical and emotional change, it can transform us spiritually. This is what I call ‘dying to live.’ Real living is about dying. If we have never learned how to die, we will never really live. In order to really be alive we need to die to the many things which prevent us from real life. The young person, the single or married person, the religious brother, sister or priest all need to die to certain things, if they want to live authentically with the spirit of their stage or calling in life. This is ‘dying to live.’ As you know, marriage is not for the weak of heart. It requires a lot of dying - both put to death their lives as single people, along with many more sacrifices. Daily death is an absolute requirement for a happy and fulfilling marriage. C.S. Lewis once wrote, "You cannot go on being a good egg forever. You must either hatch or rot." What ever you want to be needs ‘dying to live.’ Jesus said, “unless a grain of wheat dies in the ground, it cannot produce fruits.” He showed it; he teaches us to follow it in our daily living. It’s better ’to die to live, than live to die.’ Lenten blessings! Msgr. Xavier
