ORGAN VOLUNTARY: Erbarm dich mein, O Herre Gott, BWV 721 - J.S. Bach INTROIT: Adam lay ybounden – B Ord

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

HYMN: CH3 15 1. We love the place, O God, Wherein thine honour dwells; The joy of thine abode, All earthly joy excels.

2. It is the house of prayer, Wherein thy servants meet; And thou, O Lord, art there, Thy chosen flock to greet.

4. We love to sing below For mercies freely given; But O we long to know The triumph song of heaven!

5. Lord Jesus, give us grace, On earth to love thee more, In heaven to see thy face And with thy saints adore.

3. We love the word of life, The word that tells of peace, Of comfort in the strife, And joys that never cease. CALL TO PRAYER & LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

FIRST READING: Genesis 17: 1–7

PSALM: 107

SECOND READING: Mark 8: 31–38

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth: and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

HYMN: CH3 249 1. O perfect life of love! All, all is finished now, All that he left his throne above To do for us below.

2. No work is left undone Of all the Father willed; His toils and sorrows, one by one, The Scriptures have fulfilled.

3. No pain that we can share But he has felt its smart; All forms of human grief and care Have pierced that tender heart.

5. In perfect love he dies; For me he dies, for me! O all-atoning Sacrifice, I cling by faith to thee.

6. In every time of need, Before the judgment throne, Thy work, O Lamb of God, I'll plead, Thy merits, not my own.

7. Yet work, O Lord, in me, As thou for me hast wrought; And let my love the answer be To grace thy love has brought.

4. And on his thorn-crowned head, And on his sinless soul, Our sins in all their guilt were laid, That he might make us whole.

ANTHEM: Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt, SWV 380 – H Schütz PRAYER OF GRATITUDE AND CONCERN

HYMN: CH3 130 1. Lord, thy word abideth, And our footsteps guideth; Who its truth believeth Light and joy receiveth. 2. When our foes are near us, Then thy word doth cheer us, Word of consolation, Message of salvation. 3. When the storms are o'er us, And dark clouds before us, Then its light directeth, And our way protecteth.

4. Who can tell the pleasure, Who recount the treasure, By thy word imparted To the simple-hearted? 5. Word of mercy, giving Succour to the living; Word of life, supplying Comfort to the dying! 6. O that we, discerning, Its most holy learning, Lord, may love and fear thee, Evermore be near thee!

SERMON OFFERTORY: Litany to the Holy Spirit – P Hurford DOXOLOGY, DEDICATION OF THE OFFERING & CHORAL AMEN

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

HYMN: CH3 254 1. When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of Glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. 2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ, my God; All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.

3. See! from his head, his hands, his feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down; Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? 4. Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were an offering far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

BENEDICTION & CHORAL AMEN ORGAN VOLUNTARY: Prelude du deuxieme ton - J.A. Guilain

A prayer for these times: Living God, in the hollow of your hand we are safe. In this time of lockdown we feel like a ship straining at her moorings, we are lifted by waves of emotion and isolation – we want to break free. The strain is seen and heard in the creaking movement of our life. The harbour is safe. In time the ocean may swell before us, we were made for open sea. Let us fulfil our calling. You have not created us for isolation, for being alone. Father, Son and Holy Spirit, your heart is community and we long to embrace, touch and feel the breath of community again. In this time of restriction let the trickle of hope feed our roots that in time we may strain to feel the warmth of the sun and move towards the light. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
