Mission Statement : The Roman Catholic Saint Thomas More Parish Family welcomes and invites every person to join us on our journey in faith and celebration. part of the Universal Church, we affirm the dignity of every person. All this we do to give glory and honor to God.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Although Jews, Christians, and Muslims share a monotheistic faith, that is, a belief in the oneness of God, there is much that is vastly different among the three religions. A common expression used by many Arab

Muslims (which has already been subsumed into English) is inshallah a contraction of the Arabic words "in sha' Allah" meaning "if God wills

it." The expression holds within itself the attitude that things will unfold because God permits them to happen. "We will see each other tomorrow, inshallah" that is, God willing. There is a kind of a sense of fate in this attitude. Human action is ultimately dependent on divine

permission. The Gospel today takes a different approach. Jesus instructs his disciples that whoever would follow after him must "take up his cross, and follow me." He continues, "For whoever wishes to

save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and

forfeit his life?" The disciple actively chooses the suffering that is part of human existence and seeks out the will of God in his or her life. By seeking first what is right (i.e., the will of God), the disciple finds true

happiness, which eludes those who seek such happiness directly in trying to gain the whole world.

Christianity has always been an active religion. We believe that we cooperate with God's grace in performing God's will. Christians do not shrink from promoting the common good and moving forward as part of their faith. When we act in the social sphere we do so believing that God has placed us on this earth with a purpose, that each person must

discern God's will in his or her own life. That gift of vocation, whatever it may be for each individual, is lived out in the community of faith for

the building up of God's kingdom.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel today Peter wants Jesus to achieve the victory

without suffering, to take a shortcut. Sometimes we are tempted to take the shortcut, to take the easy way, and choose our own comfort or convenience over the needs of others. It is easier to conform to the ways of the world. But Jesus calls us to swim

against the current of culture. If we want to be his follower we must take up the cross.

PLEASE REMEMBER THEM Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for more than fifty years. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week:

August 29: Rev. Valerian S. Karcz (1982) September 2: Rev. Herman A. Schoudel (1970) September 3: Rev. Joseph Pusateri (2006)

CHRISTMAS? SAY WHAT?! I could not believe my eyes the other week. I received an email from someone regarding scheduling events around Christmas. Now, some of you might be thinking, “Christmas? Is he kidding?” But, actually, I am not kidding at all. I am dead serious. Because, at this time of the year, we have to turn our thoughts to preparing for Christmas. The liturgical seasons, as they come upon us, have many demands. I just cannot believe that it is that time of year already. I keep thinking, “But, I never had Easter yet.” And, in a sense, I am actually very correct in that statement, since my Easter was spent in a hospital room. That really messed up my internal calendar. Now, with the time flying, I am thinking, “Holy Moses. Before you know it, Forty Hours will be here. And then Advent. And then Christmas.” To top all of that off, Advent will bring along the changes in the new Roman Missal. There is much preparation to be done for that as well. Some of it can be prepared. Some, I will wait until the last minute so that I do not mess myself up. As you well know, I do most of the Mass from memory. I decided last year already that I was not going to try to memorize the new Mass text in the Roman Missal. Trying to do that would throw off my ability to celebrate the Mass right now. I would be standing at the altar wondering which text to use. So, I will wait until the First Sunday of Advent before trying to memorize major portions of the text for Mass. But there is preparation that can be done. One of them began last week with the bulletin covers highlighting articles designed to prepare us for the change. Soon, in our parish, we will be inviting you to come to the church to listen to different Mass settings being sung. You will have the opportunity to give your input into which Mass settings we purchase for use in the future. We will be bringing out “cheat sheets” and begin going over some of the changes. Some of the changes will be used before the First Sunday of Advent, by permission of the Holy Father. There is a lot looming on the horizon. My problem, that “looming” is much closer than I thought. I need to get myself ready. Isn’t that the way it goes for all of us? Time goes by so fast and, before you know it, a deadline arrives. Sometimes we are prepared, sometimes, not. That ultimate deadline approacheth as well. Will we be ready when the Lord calls us? Or will we try to bargain for more time? It would behoove us to be ready.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Student: “Teacher, would you punish me for something I

didn’t do?” Teacher: “No, of course not.” Student: “Good. Because I didn’t do my homework.”

AND THEY’RE OFF Well, our school has been in session for one and a half weeks now. I would like to say that they have been good weeks; however, that would all depend upon who was doing the talking.

Some students, on the first day of school, already have their eyes set upon the “finish line.” That line can be Christmas vacation or the next summer vacation. It might be graduation and getting out of here. It often is anything that does not have to do with school. I do not know where that comes from. When I was in school — really, I am not making this up — I liked school so much that most of my summers I took summer vacation. I figured that if I got some of my required courses out of the way in the summer, that would leave even more time in the school year for elective courses in which I had a great interest. I just, plain-ol’, liked school. When I ask students if they are happy to be back, I get many a negative. It really disappoints me because I was always so excited about school. But, excited or not, we are back in session and I hope that our students get everything from their schooling that they will need for the future. And to those of you who are not as excited about being back, I say, “Hold on. You only have five more days of school before your first free day for Labor Day!”

If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his office at one time, all of whom had different needs, and some of whom didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job.

In an attempt to continue our lower tuition rates we are requesting full payment at registration, as the mailing of bills creates a strain on our

budget. If you are unable to pay the full tuition you may set up a payment plan.

• Tuition is now $105 for the first student and $30 for each additional family member.

• There is an additional Sacramental fee of $5.00 for First Penance and First Holy Communion and a $25.00 fee for Confirmation.

A Roman Catholic baptismal certificate is required to accompany the registration form for new students. Registration will not be accepted

without a baptismal certificate. If your child was baptized at St. Thomas More Church, you only need to indicate this on the registration and we will verify the baptism within the office.

Our Rosary for Life continues and we hope that all who started with this worthwhile activity are still participating. Simply say a

decade every day of any one of the mysteries applying it to a pro-life cause (as in a mental prayer), asking for special graces for anyone involved in the abortion issue, euthanasia, elderly who are

ill or dying, prisoners condemned to death, etc. that they may receive special consideration, be saved and/or have a change of

can share in the recitation of the Rosary as a group.

St. Thomas More School August 28, 2011

Lots of Happy Faces on the First Day of

School Parking spaces were hard to find

as St. Thomas More School reconvened for the 2011/2012

school year on Wednesday, August 17th. Students and parents made their way into the building laden with bags and backpacks

filled with the year’s shiny, new school supplies. Surprisingly, the morning rush dissipated quickly

as 550 students in the main building found their lockers,

made their way to their classrooms and met their new

homeroom teachers. The new year is off to a great start

and the anticipation of another fabulous and enriching school year at STMS is exhilarating!

Vocations Committee It is with parents that family vocation efforts begin.

Reflect silently and seriously on the following questions: 1. Have you ever suggested priesthood or religious life to your

children or to anyone? 2. How did you do it, and what was their response? 3. If you have never raised the question with anyone, why not? 4. Imagine one of your children going to the Seminary! Whom

would you be most eager to tell? Would you be happy about it?

Gabriel Project A multitude of gratitude to all who responded to our plea for baby cribs and a dresser. Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to help several

moms prepare for the birth of their babies with peace

of mind; not only with beds and a dresser, but also

bedding, strollers, clothes and much more. Any items our current mothers do not need that we cannot store will be donated to Birth Choice to help reach out

further to mothers in need. Please keep all of our moms and their families in your prayers.

Our next Gabriel Project meeting will be Saturday, September 10th in the Solar Room.

All are welcome to attend!
