Christ is Risen: The world below lies
desolate
Christ is Risen: The spirits of evil are
fallen
Christ is Risen: The angels of God are
rejoicing
Christ is Risen: The tombs of the deadare empty
Christ is Risen indeed from the dead,
the first of the sleepers,
Glory and power are his forever and

Easter Tuesday
Despite the best informed plans,
yes, as was announced in
Thursdays newspaper, Tuesday
is a School holiday (under
section 65 of the Education Act
1989). This is not a public
holiday, but it would be
unlawful to remain open on
Tuesday. Therefore, school will
resume, after Easter on
Wednesday the 3rd of April
I apologise unreservedly if this
upsets peoples plans for Easter
and I acknowledge that I have
told people that there would be
school on Tuesday, but I was
not as informed then as I am
now! I was also ensuring that
school finished earlier at the end
of the year.
Signage
Finally, after several years
waiting, we have our new signs.
For those of you that hadnt
noticed, the billboard on the
corner outside the front of St
Patricks Basilica now features
a number of our students in a
photograph taken in 2011 by
Mrs Liddy. The design,
composition and content of theposter was collaboratively done
and printing and mounting of
the poster was very competently
completed by Tony Patterson of

Waimate Signs. At the same
time, the sign and noticeboard
which was relocated from the
carpark to the gateway is now
sporting new livery, once
again with thanks to the
design team of Gareth and
myself and the technical skills
of Tony at Waimate Signs. The finished products are
absolutely awesome and I
think that the sign out on the
street is by far the best
advertising billboard on
display in town.
Yet another Maths
competition
The senior room at St Patricks
has scored highly in another
national maths competition.Out of 50 schools and 2000+
students, St Patricks was at
the time of printing placed 1st
and several of our students
finished in the top 100
students. Most finished in the
top 200 (10%). David Xie was
ranked 35th and Caitlin
Cadogan was ranked 45th.
Exceptionally well done folks.
Thought for Easter
"Christ has not only spoken to
us by his life but has also
spoken for us by his death."

School fees and diocesan fees
Despite the rather blunt letter
that many families (if not all)
received earlier this term
reminding us all to pay our
School Attendance fees ontime, (and yes, I have to pay
them too!) as it turns out, there
actually are a small number of
2012 accounts from families
that attend our school that
remain overdue. These fees
are not normally the concern
of the school, as all attendance
fees are remitted to the
Diocesan office in
Christchurch and contribute to
the administration and runningof the Catholic Education
Office. Why I mention these
then, is because those families
that are choosing not to pay
their 2012 attendance dues
may be seriously
jeopardising their childrens
education, as these fees are
not optional. They are
enforceable by an act of
Parliament (the Integration
Act) and you agreed to pay
them when you enrolled yourchildren here.
If there is a genuine reason
(such as financial hardship)
for not paying them, then
you would need to discuss
that with someone, such as
the Principal, the Parish
Priest or the Parish Secretary
to arrange an alternative
schedule of paying or
perhaps to arrange
assistance, as there are somegrants or funds possibly
available for hardship cases.
Not paying because you
dont agree with the fees, is
not an option and would
almost certainly result in the
account being lodged with a
debt collection agency and
your child being un-enrolled.
And, yes, that can happen
Ive checked. If non-payment
is some sort of petty protest
at having to pay fees, then
you are obviously at the
wrong school anyway. There
are a lot of needy families
that could possibly qualify
for some assistance with fees
that continue to scrimp and
save and to pay these fees on
principle, because that is
what they owe. It is only fair
that we all pay them. So, if you are one of the very
few that have outstanding
2012 (or earlier) Attendance
fee accounts with the
Diocese, please ensure that
you either pay them, or
arrange to talk to someone
about them.
On a positive note, our
current crop of students are
performing so wonderfully,academically, socially and
spiritually. All of our new
entrants are welcomed into
the fold with open arms,

perhaps its simply that they
arent? Perhaps they simply
dont know what it is that we
do here?
In the meantime we are
quite enjoying our small wee
school, our small class sizes
and our exceptional teachers
and support staff.
I sincerely hope that you all
have a well-earned peaceful
Easter break and that you all
spend some time in reflection
about the sacrifices that Jesus
made for man.
Just how I see it folks.
Dont be offended.

aroha and respect and all
make the adjustment to school
n their own time and in their
own way. We have a buddy
ystem operating across the
chool, with several volunteer
enior students regularly
ouching base with the juniors
o that the little ones get used
o the bigger kids and also sohat they have a wider range
of options and go to

hem.
Our great wee school is
lowly growing and the
number of new entrants is a
positive sign for the future.
Those parents that are
choosing not to bring their
children here (that could be)
are not doing so based on
educational grounds as our
tudents easily and
consistently out-perform even
our high expectations. In past
urveys the expression lack
of competition has been used
o describe small schools.

No; I dont think competition
is the reason that those
parents are choosing to not
enrol their children at ourschool.
And it has nothing to do with
staff,or the programme. ERO
have given us the stamp of
approval and most of the
teaching staff, including
myself have not been here
long enough to be the reason.
No; it must be something else.
Perhaps they just find it more
important to be going with the
in crowd rather than
sending their Catholic
children to a Catholic school.
Perhaps its not that the
school isnt Catholic enough,
