BLESSED SACRAMENT CHAPEL
ALWAYS OPEN FOR PRAYER & ADORATION
Recently, we were all witnesses of a titanic clash between democrats and republicans in the United State Senate. The clash was about many things but included great differences of opinion of what constitutes “fairness and unfairness”, “the rule of law”, “the presumption of innocence”, “the importance of listening to those who maintain they have been victims of sexual assault”, and “credible and corroborated allegations.”Each side expressed their point of view, their perspective, and their understanding of the truth with great passion and conviction. So how did we onlookers sort all this out? It appears to have revolved around each person’s political convictions. Those who lean in one direction had no sympathy for the arguments of those they regarded as foes. And vice versa. This clash has led to civil discord which threatens to tear what’s left of the social fabric that once led us to pledge allegiance to One nation under God. Is there a way out of this coarsening of conversation and argument? I’m beginning to think that the answer may be “no” for all who are unwilling to make the pursuit of everlasting life their highest priority. If we cling to the drama of political differences, loving God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and loving our neighbor as we love ourselves is likely to be regarded as something beyond our reach. Many have chosen to believe that their political party is more in harmony with their understanding of what “The Gospel” means. Wrapping themselves in that mantel moves them to perceived higher ground from which they can cast aspersions and condemnation at their opponents. Anyone who questions them is accused of malice. Growing up in Boston, long before I sensed that God was calling me to the priesthood, I was very committed to the political party that elected Harry Truman and Jack Kennedy. I marched with Martin Luther King, burnt my draft card and protested the war in far off Asia. I worked in the poverty program in inner city Boston, San Antonio, and northern Minnesota. In January of 1973, the Supreme Court discovered that women have a constitutional “right of privacy” which allowed them to legally terminate the life of their unborn children. To make a long story short, I quit the political party that embraced Roe v. Wade and moved on to another. But they had shortcomings as well so I began to style myself as an “independent”. In recent years I’ve found plenty of reasons to conclude that political parties divide rather than unite. In my finer moments, I seek to live in and for the kingdom of God. Wish I could do it more perfectly. Last Sunday, after Communion at the 11:45 Mass, I made some comments which were politically inappropriate. I have apologized to two parishioners who contacted me directly. And now I apologize to anyone else I may have offended. In recent years I have learned that often the best thing to say is nothing. Wish I had followed that little piece of wisdom. Lord have mercy.

HEALING PRAYER MINISTRY
Since praying for healing was a core element of the ministry of Jesus, it must also be a vital part of parish ministry as well. The healing power of God is available to the Church through all the sacraments but especially through the Eucharist, Reconciliation, and Anointing of the Sick. As a worshipping community we intercede during Mass for the inform and homebound and we are invited to pray for them throughout the week. Beginning in March, we began a Healing Prayer Ministry for members of the parish willing to invite others to pray with, for, and over them. This ministry will be available in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel following the Saturday evening Mass on the third weekend of each month.
Have you or someone you know been facing difficulties? Have you ever wished just to be touched by the Lord himself and be healed like the many people we read about in the new Testament? Did you know that St. Paul taught that the Holy Spirit imparts a special gift of healing to individuals willing to use it in the service of others? There are such individuals right here at St. Andrew’s and they are ready and willing to offer healing prayer to all who seek it. Keep in mind that God does not always will a physical healing, but may choose to bestow a spiritual or emotional healing.

PREPARING FOR BAPTISM CLASS
SUNDAY OCTOBER 21ST
1pm in Room 4
We conduct this one session program for members of our parish who are planning to baptize a child for the very first time. First time godparents are also welcome, but participation is optional. There are other expectations of parents who are going to promise to raise their child in the faith of the Church. Following this class, parents must contact Father Jack at least 30 days before the date you are requesting to see if there may be any special circumstances in scheduling the actual baptism. Child care is available upon request during the session.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH
CONTINUING TO BUILD
A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
This program is designed to assist children and youth of all ages to know how to handle situations in which they may be vulnerable to abuse. The materials choose words and expressions carefully and sensitively on age appropriate levels so that young people can learn how to protect themselves and how to reach out to trusted adults for help. Info for parents will be going out shortly in preparation for the programs for children which are scheduled for November 4th. We will also have a presentation available for all parents at that time.

COOKIES FOR PRISONERS
KAIROS is the name of an ecumenical ministry to residents of Oklahoma correctional facilties. We often speak of prisoners “doing time”, well the word KAIROS refers to God’s special time during which the gift of salvation is always at hand. While we all can’t go into prisons, we can do prisoners a good deed by providing them with lots of cookies.
Deadline for bringing cookies is Wednesday, November 7th
NOVEMBER IS THE MONTH OF ALL SOULS
PICTURES OF THE DECEASED
We have many pictures of loved ones which you have entrusted to our care. If you have any other pictures you would like displayed, please bring them as soon as you can and place them in the box on the table in the commons. Indicate their name and their relationship to you so that we can get your pictures back to you. They will be displayed throughout November as a visible sign of our communion with all who have gone before us in the hope of rising again.
