4-H Newsletter

APRIL 2014

4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills.

Celebration of Science and Service May 8, 2014

On May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the Smith-Lever Act, which created Cooperative Extension, the world’s first system connecting public higher education with local communities in the pursuit of service to the land and its people. In California, Cooperative Extension is administered by the University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR), the host organization for the 4-H Youth Development Program! May 8: University of California Day of Science and Service http://beascientist.ucanr.edu On May 8, 2014, UC Cooperative Extension celebrates its 100th birthday. In the spirit of cooperation, the UC ANR is asking you to join us for a one-day science project. Take a walk, visit a park or enjoy the beauty of a garden. Paint a picture of California’s food and water resources by marking your responses on our online GIS maps! How many pollinators do you see outside in a 3-minute time period? Bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, moths, beetles, birds and bats help plants reproduce. By marking our California map, we can get a better idea of where pollinators are—and are not—across the state.

Where is food grown in your community?

Nearly every community in California contributes in some way to food production, from large farms to backyard gardens. By marking our California food map, we can get a

better idea of where food is produced across the state.

How do you conserve water?

With each passing day, the availability of clean water is diminishing. Your data will help create a clearer picture of what water conservation practices are used across the state of California. Free educational activities are available for grades K-12 around water conservation, gardening and nutrition, and pollinators to support the questions outlined above. In addition, links to curricula, ANR research projects, and additional efforts around these topics are available on the website. More information is available at http://100.ucanr.edu/Day_of_Science_and_Service/ Plan to host an event with your 4-H Club, project, or another organization! State 4-H Policy Regarding Child Abuse Note: Section 800 of the Policy Handbook is available online from

the State 4-H Website: www.ca4h.org for those who want to read it

in its entirety. Child safety brochures are available at the 4-H

Office. Below is a brief summary on Child Abuse.

What is Child Abuse? How do I recognize Child Abuse?

Child Abuse and neglect are the injury, sexual abuse,, sexual

exploitation, negligent treatment, or maltreatment of a child by any

person who harms the child’s health, welfare, and/or safety.

How do I respond to a Child who discloses?

Believe the child and be supportive

Be on the same eye level

Reassure the child that it is okay to tell

Listen to the child

Rephrase the important thoughts

Tell the child help is available

Let the child know you can report it

Trust your “gut” feelings

(Although not mandated, you may report)

Don’t promise confidentiality

Don’t panic or express shock

Don’t ask leading or suggestive questions

Don’t make negative comments about the alleged perpetrator

Don’t disclose information indiscriminately

Who must report?

All 4-H YDP Staff are considered to be childcare custodians and

are thus required by law to report suspected child abuse. 4-H

Volunteers are not considered childcare custodians and are not

required by law to make reports.

However, the penal code states that volunteers who supervise

children or have direct contact with them are encouraged to

obtain training in how to identify and report child abuse.

A 4-H Volunteer may elect to notify Child Protection Services or

local law enforcement agencies directly. In addition, the 4-H

Office should be notified to ensure the safety of other youth

involved in 4-H YDP activities. Encourage the 4-H member to tell

the appropriate authorities.

Any person making a report about child abuse is immune from civil

or criminal liability as a result of the report, unless it can be proven

that a false report was made, and the volunteer knew the report was

false.

WORKING WITH JUNIOR AND TEEN LEADERS The Value of Youth & Adults Working Together

Youth-Adult Partnerships in 4-H provide an opportunity for youth and adults to share

responsibility and ideas and to develop leadership skills together. Junior and Teen

Leaders are involved in planning, teaching, and leading projects, activities and events at

all levels of the 4-H Youth Development Program.

Successful youth-adult partnerships themes include:

Build Relationships – Get to know each other and build trust and confidence in each

other’s skills and abilities. Understand each person’s strengths/gifts/talents/

resources and how they contribute to the partnership. Be organized. Check in with

each other often to be aware of progress. Appreciate each person’s contributions. Use

phone calls, email and notes of thanks to keep in touch.

Set high expectations – List your goals for the year and how you plan to accomplish

them. Map out your year and then focus on each meeting’s topic or theme. Make sure

experiential learning is happening and that the project members are reaching their

goals. Use project proficiencies and help everyone be successful.

Communicate clear expectations - Decide together what will happen, who will do it

and how it will be done to avoid misunderstandings. Write it down. Be realistic on time

frames. Acknowledge that each person’s contributions enhance the outcome.

Be a Team – Each person should contribute to the plan. Be willing to try new ideas.

Share difficulties and challenges and create ways to make them into positive opportuni-

ties.

Evaluate, affirm, and recognize. Reflection is an important element in learning. Evalu-

ate project goals, direction, and progress. Reflect on your roles in the project and your

effectiveness. Give feedback, encouragement, and celebrate success. Alter

future direction if needed.

4-H Youth Development

Management and Program Development Teams (previously) Leaders Council Meeting

Next meeting: May 19th, 2014

The official change to the new 4-H Leadership Teams happened at

the March Leader’s Council meeting. All Committee Chair

positions and the application forms were distributed and will soon

be on the county 4-H website. YOU are the official recruiters. All

chairs are voting members and anyone can attend and participate.

Each committee will also need members so please consider where

your passion is and what level of involvement you would like to

have. Also consider other older teens and adults in or out of 4-H

that would serve well on these committees. Contact the 4-H Office

with any questions.

The Bridgeville Club hosted the March meeting. Fieg-Tucker

Scholarships were awarded. In small groups everyone answered

three key questions: What are the benefits of 4-H? What do you

want to see less of? What do you want to see more of? This

information will guide the future direction of the 4-H Program.

Committee and event reports were given as well as fair updates.

Sandy announced her retirement effective July 1st. Upcoming

events are in the GRAM which is being delivered electronically.

one simple 10-20 minute presentation and you will receive free

entry into the fair that day. If you are willing but need ideas, the

4-H office will help you find a project to present. Call today!

RECORD KEEPING—A Life Skill By Sandy Sathrum

Record keeping is one of the 4-H Life Skills you will use through-

out your life; just ask anyone working on their taxes. Record keep-

ing is important to develop good organizational habits and use

your creativity. Well-kept records provide short-term goals to meet

club requirements, complete project work, show at the fair, and

provide opportunities for star ranks and special recognition. Long-

term rewards include career opportunities, scholarships, and lead-

ership opportunities at county, regional, state and national levels.

Record keeping skills help members:

Plan and reach goals.

Celebrate accomplishments.

Recognize growth and expertise.

Account for the investments of time, energy and money.

Keep a record for future needs (jobs, scholarships, etc.)

Develop organizational skills

Increase discipline and responsibility

Plan for wise use of resources.

Inside this issue of the GRAM is information on completing your

4-H records using the printed forms and information on using the

new online record book system. Whatever method you choose,

there are great benefits for you!

White Socks Report! by Rachelle Regli

On behalf of the White Socks for Blue Angel, I am proud to say that our committee collected over 1000 socks and 100 jars of peanut butter. The socks and peanut butter were delivered to Betty’s house on February 25, 2014. Betty was not there to receive the socks and peanut butter but did call and said “Thank you very much” to all the people who donat-ed time, commitment, socks, peanut butter, and money to her cause.

FRESHWATER 4-H CLUB NEWS! By, Ursula Reynolds: Reporter

We had a great time at the March Freshwater

4-H meeting! We had lots of people attend, and lots

of very exciting announcements. Wakara Scott ran

the last Freshwater 4-H meeting since our by-laws

state that the vice president must run one meeting of

the year.

On March ninth some of our very own Freshwater

4-H members participated in presentation day! Thank

you Seren Davies-Hughes for representing

Freshwater!

Thank you Kylie VanVleck for donating snacks for

our valentine’s party at our meeting in February. We

had lots of great yummy snacks! We also decorated

valentine’s cards for citizens in care homes! Kylie

VanVleck and other 4-H members dropped off the

cards. Thank you!

At the March meeting we started nominating new

people for executive positions. Congratulations to

anyone who was nominated!

FERNDALE 4-H CLUB NEWS by Bryleigh Busick

At our February meeting we had our annual Valentines’

party and card contest. There were many cute and sparkly cards

that really stood out. Under old business we talked about the

Rotary Club’s generous donation of $750 to pay for our annual 4

-H pancake breakfast supplies. After we closed the meeting we

handed out the pancake breakfast tickets to sell. Any 4-H mem-

ber who sells $100 worth of tickets will receive a gift certificate

to the Red Front Store. The top seller gets something much big-

ger than that.

At our March meeting we had our annual guest speaker

who was Andrea Guggenbickler. She is the Dairy Princess, of

Humboldt / Del Norte County. She talked about her job. She

also handed out prizes if you answered dairy fact questions cor-

rectly. In old business we talked about the county fundraiser for

4-H camp which we raised over $900. Westside Pizza businesses

in both Arcata and Fortuna will be having a benefit on April 8th

with 10% of all sales going to our 4-H Summer Camp fund. In

new business we talked about our annual Pancake Breakfast on

April 6th at the Community Center in Ferndale. We will be serv-

ing pancakes, freshly cut ham, eggs and you will have the choice

of coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice, chocolate milk and regular

milk. Hope to see you there!
