Hopefully you have been able to follow my postings on our website & myParish App, keeping abreast of some of what we are trying to do in the parish during these difficult times of the coronavirus. Special thanks to Sharon and JB who have been my touchstones for posting in such a timely way!
We have attempted to contact our parishioners by phone, to check in to see how all are doing, to learn if we have anyone in special need or shut in and not able to get food or medicine, to make a list of those in the parish who are able to help if there are people in need and to create phone circles of about six households each through which everyone in the circle is contacted daily to check in, to see how things are going and to pray for one another. If you didn’t get a call or receive a message it’s because we don’t have a phone num-ber for you, your phone number was changed or disconnected after you registered or you didn’t register in the parish. While a bit tedious, the task of calling all our parishioners has helped us connect a little bit more. Many were pleased to be contacted and willing to help. Going through the list also revealed for how many we do not have phone numbers or correct phone numbers. We also reached people in places far from Reno who moved years ago. It has been a fruitful effort in many ways. We now have a list of people who can help and have created about eight phone circles. A nod of thanks to Anne and Tony who did the bulk of the calling, helping Fr. Lucio and me on this project. This Sunday is the fifth Sunday of Lent. Next Sunday is Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord already and then Sacred Triduum will be upon us. I am hoping that we will have live-stream capability in the church or rectory, perhaps by this weekend, but if not, for Holy Week. It would be wonderful if many of us could cel-ebrate this holy time together with our bishop on-line at the same time. We also would record it for those who cannot make the same time. The TV Mass continues on Sunday at 9:00 AM on KOLO Channel 8, as well as at various times on the Catholic TV Network. As people of faith, it is crucial that we set aside time to observe not only every Sunday, but all of the holy days, now more than ever. Times of crisis can grant us a new perspective and a deepening of what is truly important.
The weekend before the escalation of the protections against the coronavirus I mentioned in the bulletin letter that all parishioners would be receiving a letter from me in the mail about the Catholic Services Appeal. We were poised to print and send it out when all the restrictions hit, so I held it up for revision. I am hopeful that we will be getting it in the mail to you this week. Thanks for your understanding and support.
Today’s gospel story of the raising of Lazarus is a powerful reminder that our Lord has power over death. We can become fearful and frustrated in our sequestered places these days. We must be willing to proclaim loud and clear, as did Martha to Jesus, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God.” He will see us through our trying times. Let us continue to pray for one another and for all who are suffering. If you have access to the internet, check our website, www.stacathedral.com, to stay informed of changes, I would also like to encourage you once more to go to the App Store and download myParish App, where you will get updated info from your parish as well as your diocese. Espero hayan tenido la oportunidad de leer mis publicaciones en nuestro sitio web y myParish App, para mantenerse al tanto de cambios que como parroquia hemos tenido que implementar durante estos tiempos difíciles del coronavirus. ¡Gracias Sharon y JB por su ayuda con las publicaciones!
Hemos intentado contactar por teléfono a todos nuestros feligreses, para saber cómo están todos y cada uno de ellos y saber si hay alguien con alguna necesidad especial o a quien no le es posible obte-ner comida o medicina, y al mismo tiempo crear círculos telefónicos de unos seis hogares e identificar quienes están disponibles para ayudar. El fin de los círculos telefónicos es contactase entre los hoga-res diariamente para asegurarse que todos están bien y orar unos por otros. Si no recibió una llamada o mensaje, lo mas seguro es porque no tenemos su número de teléfono, su número de teléfono fue cambiado o desconectado, simplemente no se ha registrado en la parroquia. Aunque un poco tediosa, la tarea de llamar a nuestros feligreses nos ha ayudado a conectarnos un poco más. Muchos están agradecidos de haber sido contactados y están dispuestos a ayudar. Esto también reveló un número de feligreses de quienes no tenemos números de teléfono o números de teléfono incorrectos. También nos comunicamos con personas que se mudaron fuera de Reno hace años. Este Domingo es el V domingo de Cuaresma. El próximo Domingo es Domingo de Ramos de la Pa-sión del Señor, el Triduo Pascual está a la vuelta de la esquina. Espero que tengamos la capacidad de transmitir en vivo desde la iglesia o desde la rectoría, si no este fin de semana, para la Semana Santa. Sería maravilloso que pudiéramos celebrar al mismo tiempo en línea, este tiempo santo junto con nues-tro obispo. Grabaremos esta transmisión para aquellos que no puedan verlo en vivo. La Misa por tele-visión en inglés continúa los Domingos a las 9:00 AM por el Canal 8 KOLO, así como en varios horarios en la Red de Televisión Católica. Como personas de fe, ahora más que nunca, es crucial que dedique-mos tiempo para Dios no sólo los Domingos, sino todos los días santos. Los tiempos de crisis pueden darnos una nueva perspectiva y profundización de lo que es verdaderamente importante.
El fin de semana pasado, antes del aumento de tantas protecciones contra el Corona Virus, mencioné en el boletín que recibirían una carta de mi parte sobre la Apelación de Servicios Católicos. La historia del Evangelio de hoy sobre la resurrección de Lázaro es un poderoso recordatorio del po-der que nuestro Señor tiene sobre la muerte. Podemos sentirnos temerosos y frustrados, aislados en nuestros hogares. Debemos estar dispuestos a proclamar alto y claro, al igual que Marta a Jesús, "Sí, Señor. Creo firmemente que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios." Él nos protegerá durante los tiempos difíciles. Sigamos orando unos por otros y por todos los que sufren. TODAS LAS MISAS PÚBLICAS SUSPENDIDAS HASTA EL 16 DE ABRIL Please note that during this challenging me, the church will be open during the
normal mes we have Mass and all day on Sunday. We’ll have Exposi on of the Blessed Sacrament on Saturday evening & Sunday. It’s crucial that we all respect the health officials’ call to “social distancing”, which means we keep at least 6 apart from one another, and we do not gather in groups of more than 9.
For the Sacrament of Reconcilia on, during our normal scheduled mes, a priest will be available in the church & give “General Confession and Absolu on”. What this means is that the priest will ask all who wish to receive sacramental ab-solu on to kneel and thereby acknowledge that they are sinners. Together they will pray an Act of Contri on, and the Our Father, and then the priest will pray the absolu on prayer. There will be no individual confessions. It is important that penitents do not gather in that back ves bule in lines, but simply come into the church, maintaining proper social distance, no more than 9 people, and wait for the priest to begin. This will be repeated several mes during our normal me for Reconcilia on so that we don’t have too many gathered in the church.

GIVE GLORY TO GOD On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, just before we begin to enter Holy Week, we are summoned to Bethany. If we had been friends of Mary, Lazarus, and Martha, and found out that Lazarus was gravely ill, we probably would have dropped everything to be with them. This was what was so surprising about the behavior of Jesus. Although he was their close friend, he chose to stay away, that God’s glory would be manifested. This is a persistent theme in John’s Gospel. Right to the very end, Jesus’ works were meant to give glory to the Father. As our Lenten journey reaches a crescendo, let us be mindful that, as people who have “put on Christ” in baptism, we are also called, by our attitudes and actions, to give glory to God.

RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE Today’s Gospel tells us of the raising of Lazarus. In Jesus’ exchange with Lazarus’ sister Martha, she refers to the general resurrection of the dead on “the last day.” Jesus then shifts the perspective by iden-tifying himself as “the resurrection and the life.” What does this mean? Jesus earlier had spoken of the hour “when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live” (John 5:25). When Jesus cries out in a loud voice—“Lazarus, come out!”—Jesus fulfills that role in the present, offer-ing resurrection and life here and now, in a new relationship with him. Resurrection is offered not only on the last day, and not only at our physical death, but in the mix of our present daily lives. Sometimes we are buried in tombs of suffering or of entrapment in sin. When we encounter death in its many forms, in faith we can hear Jesus, who summons us out of death and into life. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
LA RESURRECCIÓN Y LA VIDA El Evangelio de hoy nos habla de cómo revivió Lázaro. En el dialogo entre Jesús y Marta, la hermana de Lázaro, ella se refiere a la resurrección universal de la muerte en “el úl mo día”. Entonces Jesús cambia la perspec va al iden ficarse él mismo como “la resurrección y la vida”. ¿Qué significa esto? Anteriormente Jesús había hablado de la hora “en que los muertos oirán la voz de Dios, y todos los que la oi-gan, vivirán” (Juan 5:25). Cuando Jesús con voz alta dice: “¡Lázaro, sal!” Jesús cumple ese papel en el presente, ofreciendo vida nuevamente aquí y ahora en una nueva relación con él. La resurrección se ofrece no solamente en el úl mo día, y no solamente en nues-tra muerte sica, pero en la mezcla de nuestras vidas del día a día. Algunas veces es-tamos enterrados en tumbas de sufrimiento o atrapados en el pecado. Cuando en-contramos la muerte en sus muchas formas, con fe podemos escuchar a Jesús, quien nos llama de la muerte a la vida.

DA GLORIA A DIOS En el Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma, justo antes de entrar en la Semana Santa, somos llamados a Betania. Si hubiéramos sido amigos de María, Lázaro y Marta, y nos hubiéramos enterado que Lázaro estaba gravemente enfermo, probablemente lo habríamos dejado todo para estar con ellos. Eso es lo más sorprendente del com-portamiento de Jesús. Pese a que era su amigo cercano, eligió mantenerse alejado, para que la gloria de Dios se manifestara. Este es un tema persistente en el Evange-lio de Juan. Hasta el mismo final, las obras de Jesús son para dar gloria al Padre. A medida que nuestra jornada de Cuaresma llega a su apogeo, recordemos que, como personas que “se han reves do de Cristo” en el Bau smo, también somos llamados a dar gloria a Dios en nuestras ac tudes y acciones.

El arzobispo José H. Gomez de Los Ángeles, Presidente de la Conferencia de Obis-pos Católicos de Estados Unidos emitió un comunicado y un llamado a la oración con respecto al coronavirus: Con el brote mundial del coronavirus, nos enfrentamos una vez más con la fragilidad de nuestras vidas, y nuevamente recordamos nuestra solidaria humanidad y que los pueblos de este mundo son nuestros hermanos y hermanas, que todos somos una sola familia al cuidado de Dios. Dios no nos abandona, él va con nosotros incluso ahora en este tiempo de prueba y dificultad. En este momento, es importante para nosotros anclar nuestros corazones con la esperanza que tenemos en Jesucristo. Ahora es el momento de intensificar nuestras oraciones y sacrificios por el amor de Dios y el amor a nuestro prójimo.
