In the last few years, researchers have made startlingconnections with good hearing and mental fitness. Con-versely, we have learned that a loss of hearing representsmore than just difficulty hearing sounds. It often leads tosocial isolation and depression. Studies seem to show thathearing loss may also be linked to loss of memory andthinking skills.Johns Hopkins researchers found that declines in think-

ing skills happened faster among people with hearing lossthan those without it. Diminished hearing can lead to lessbrain stimulation. It's clear that hearing loss is more than 'just' a hearing

issue.

Even small noises cause the pupils of the eyes to dilate. It is believed that this is why surgeons, watchmakers andothers who perform delicate manual operations are sobothered by uninvited noise. The sound causes theirpupils to change focus and blur their vision, making itharder to do their job well.Everyone has a unique smell, except for identical twins.

Newborns are able to recognize the smell of their mothersand many of us can pinpoint the smell of our significantothers and those we are close to. Part of that smell is de-termined by genetics, but it’s also largely do to environ-ment, diet and personal hygiene products that create aunique chemistry for each person.Women are born better smellers than men and remain

better smellers over life. Studies have shown that womenare more able to correctly pinpoint what a smell is. Whilewomen are overall better smellers, there is an unfortunate2% of the population with no sense of smell at all.Your eyes are always the same size from birth but your

nose and ears never stop growing. When babies look up atyou with those big eyes, they’re the same size that they’llbe carrying around in their bodies for the rest of theirlives. Their ears and nose, however, will grow throughouttheir lives and research has shown that growth peaks inseven year cycles.

(BPT) - Snoring isn't pleasant for anyone - not the partnerwho has to sleep beside the snorer, nor the snorer whosebreathing may pause repeatedly throughout the night. Butdid you know that loud, excessive snoring is often a sign ofobstructive sleepapnea, a condition that- if left untreated - cancause you to be fivetimes more likely to diefrom heart disease?Along with good nu-

trition and regular exer-cise, healthy sleep isessential for a healthyheart. Heart disease isthe leading cause ofdeath in the U.S, sotreating sleep apnea isgood for your sleep andyour heart.According to the Na-

tional Healthy SleepAwareness Project, ob-structive sleep apnea isa chronic disease thatafflicts at least 25 mil-lion U.S. adults."Obstructive sleep

apnea is destroying thehealth of millions of Americans, and the problem has onlygotten worse over the last two decades," says Dr. TimothyMorgenthaler, president of the American Academy of SleepMedicine and a nationalspokesperson for the HealthySleep Project. The project is acollaboration between theAASM, the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention, theSleep Research Society andother partners.Sleep apnea involves repetitive pauses in breathing dur-

ing sleep, which can put an enormous strain on the heart.Severe sleep apnea can reduce the amount of oxygen in yourblood and cause dangerous surges in your blood pressure. This stress triggers your body to respond in ways that maypromote heart disease.Sleep apnea may be far more common than you think.

Between 30 percent and 40 percent of adults with highblood pressure also have sleep apnea. The rate of sleepapnea soars to 80 percent among people with high bloodpressure that do not respond to treatment with medica-

tions. Research evenshows that sleepapnea can affect theshape, size and per-formance of yourheart."The good news is

that detecting andtreating sleep apneacan improve yourheart health and otherclinical outcomes,"Morgenthaler says. The primary treat-

ment for obstructivesleep apnea is contin-uous positive airwaypressure therapy.CPAP therapy keepsyour airway open byproviding a stream ofair through a maskthat you wear duringsleep. Treating sleepapnea with CPAP ther-

apy improves blood pressure control and reduces the risk ofheart disease. It can even reverse the changes to the shapeand size of the heart that can be caused by sleep apnea.

Excess body weight is theleading risk factor for sleepapnea, and loud snoring is acommon symptom. Otherwarning signs for sleep apneainclude choking or gaspingduring sleep, and daytime fa-tigue or sleepiness. Visit stop-

snoringpledge.org to pledge to "Stop the Snore" by talkingto a doctor about your risk for sleep apnea."Treatment of sleep apnea can be life-changing and po-

tentially life-saving," Morgenthaler says. "For the best pos-sible clinical outcomes, people with heart disease shoulddiscuss their risk for sleep apnea with their doctor."For more information, visit projecthealthysleep.org.

The Easiest Thing You Can Do For Your Health And Looks:

Drink More Water(BPT) - You proba-

bly already know thatexercising and eatingright are key ways toimprove your health. But, you may beoverlooking onemajor health neces-sity that is as close asyour kitchen faucet -water. It's vital allyear long, even dur-ing winter monthswhen you mightthink hydration isless important."Staying hydrated

is a very importantcomponent of stay-ing healthy," says physician assistant Tricia A. Howard, a fac-ulty member at South University, Savannah College ofHealth Professions . "Most people know they need to stayhydrated when they are doing vigorous exercise or in veryhot weather, but they don't realize the importance of mak-ing sure they are getting enough water every day."

Why water is importantSixty percent of your body weight is made up of water.

Since water carries nutrients to cells in your body, andflushes toxins from vital organs, Howard says it is importantto replace what you lose daily."Our bodies are always losing water - even when we

breathe we are losing small amounts," she says. "So, it is im-portant to know how much water you need daily and tomake a point of drinking it."

Your daily intakeHoward says men need three liters, or 13 cups, of water a

day. Women should drink 2.2 liters or nine cups daily."If you drink water with each meal, and at least one glass

between each meal, you will be very close to what you needto drink every day," Howard suggests. And there is good news if you want some variety. Howard

says beverages like milk and even coffee can take the placeof some of the water that you need to drink daily."Drinks that are high in water, and low in calories, are ac-

ceptable substitutions for water," Howard explains. "Butwatch out for sugary, high-calorie drinks that will causeweight gain."

Beauty benefitsHoward says the

benefits of stayingproperly hydratedevery day go beyondgood health. Stayinghydrated also ap-proves the appear-ance of your skin."Drinking a glass of

water is one of theeasiest things any ofus can do," Howardsays. "It is importantto how your bodyworks on the inside, and how it looks onthe outside. Addingthis simple step to

your daily routine is well worth the many benefits."
