    SIMOVERTr MASTERDRIVES Vector ControlOverview

    Top solutions withengineered drives

The SIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVES Vector Control frequency converters arevoltage-source DC link converters with fully digitaltechnology and IGBT inver-ters which, in conjunctionwith Siemens three phaseAC motors, provide high-performance, economicaldrives for all industrial sec-tors and applications.

SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES system-based drivetechnologyA uniform, modular seriesof standard units

The SIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVES Vector Control series of converters is bothuniform and modular in de-sign. The power output of the

standard units ranges from2.2 kW to 2300 kW.

All internationally standardsupply voltages from 200 Vto 690 V are covered.

Depending on the appli-cation and the requiredoutput, there are threetypes of housing designavailable: the compact unit, the chassis unit and thecabinet unit.

The hardware and softwaremodules enable tailoredand cost effective drive solutions.

The SIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVES converters withself-commutated rectifier/regenerative AFE unit (Active Front End) are thehigh-end technical drive solution available as cabinetunits for four-quadrant opera-tion.They are characterizedby: sinusoidal current removal

from the power system commutation failure pro-

tected even during supplydips or power failure

    and possibility of reactivepower compensation.

The units are designed as : converters for connection

    to a 3-phase AC system

  • The SIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVESVectorControl seriesof converters consists ofmodular, high-performancecomponents.Thesecompo-nents can be combined forindividual applications.

    Converters and inverters

The SIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVES are available as:

converters for connectionto a 3-phase AC system.

inverters for connection toDC buses which are sup-plied with power by recti-fier or rectifier/regenerativeunits.

The system of componentsenables a uniform layout, irre-spective of whether conver-ters or inverters are used. The components can be in-stalled side by side in almostany combination, even ifthey are different in size, ena-bling considerable space sav-ings to be made. As systemmodules, they can be usedto obtain the right solution tomatch any drive task, whe-ther single or multi-motor.

There are 12 different sizescovering a power outputranging from 2.2 kW to2300 kW. (see Fig. 2/1).

The units have a uniformconnection system: the line-voltage and DC link terminalsare located on top and themotor terminals are under-neath.

The modular and uniformdesign of the electronicsoptions enables optimizedmatching to all drive require-ments with regard to bothtechnology and communica-tion.

Ease of handling and installa-tion and a high level ofuniformity were essentialfactors in the developmentof the SIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVES.This isdemon-strated by the standardizedhousings, mounting and con-nection levels, as well as bythe connections to signaland bus cables.

The SIMOVERTMASTER-DRIVES are available as Com-pact units, chassis units and ascabinet units.

Compact units are de-signed in the space-savingBOOKSIZEformat withdegree of protection IP 20.The units are simply hungfrom a standard DIN G railand secured at the bottomof the cabinet with a screwfastening. Compact unitscan be mounted into cabi-nets with a depth 400 mm.

Chassis units are designedwith degree of protectionIP00.Thecovers conformwith the safety regulationsto VDE 0113,Part 5 and VDE0106, Part 100 (VBG 4). IP20 degree of protection canalso be achieved with an op-tional assembly kit.

The Compact and chassisunits can be installed with-out any space betweenthem. Exception: water-cooled compact units haveto be installed with a sideclearance of about 65 mmfrom the next unit (see page3/14).

Cabinet units are suppliedas converters with degreeof protection IP 20 as stand-ard. Cabinets with higherdegrees of protection arealso available (see Sec-tion 4).The convertercabi-net units are ready-to-con-nect cabinets for single andgroup drives with optionsavailable for every possibleapplication.

  • 12-pulse operation,Active Front End (AFE)

Converters for 12-pulseoperation are supplied bytwo parallel-connected recti-fier or rectifier/regenerativeunits with the same output.

They are connected to thesupply via a three-windingtransformer with two secon-dary windings displaced by30 electrically. In this way, system perturbations areconsiderablyreduced.Therelevant harmonic currentsof the fifth and seventh orderare almost eliminated whencompared to 6-pulse opera-tion.

The self-commutated pulsedrectifier/regenerative unit(Active Front End) consistsof an inverter with IGBT mod-ules.The currents taken fromsupply are quasi sinusoidalso that supply-typical har-

monics do not occur. Systemperturbations are at theirlowest. Further advantagesare variable line power factor, compensation for supply un-dervoltages and switch-offin the case of supply failurewithout stalling the inverteror without fuse blowing dur-ing regenerative operation.

    Rectifier units andrectifier/regenerativeunits

    Types of DC voltage supplyunits

There are two types of DCsupply units for supplyingone or more inverters:

The rectifier unit is a6-pulse rectifier bridge withpre-charging circuit andenables the flow of energyfrom the power system tothe DC voltage bus (single-quadrant operation).

The rectifier/regenerativeunit consists of two anti-parallel 6-pulse thyristorbridges and enables theflow of energy in both direc-tions, i.e. energy can be fedback into the power system(4-quadrantoperation).Theregenerating bridge isconnected via an autotrans-former (option).

    Single-quadrant operation,four-quadrant operation

Units for single-quadrantoperation can only work inmotoring mode. For regen-erative mode, a braking unitis necessary. Units for four-quadrant operation canreturn regenerative energyto the three-phase supply. This may be necessary, forexample, when drives with alarge rotating mass have tobe braked frequently or rap-idly.

    System components

In addition to the converter, inverter and rectifier basicunits, the system compo-nents enable solutionsadapted to meet the driverequirements.

The system components canbe broken down as follows:

    Braking units and brakingresistors

Electronic options e.g. tech-nology, communication andinterface boards

Other system componentssuch asswitching and protectiondevices, line reactors and outputreactors andradio interference suppres-sion filters.

    Control types

The SIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVESVectorControl stand-ard software contains twoprincipal control types whichprovide the correct solutionfor any drive task:

Frequency control bymeans of the V/f-charac-teristic curvewith or without speedfeedback and for textileapplications. Frequencycontrol is suitable for sim-ple applications and forhigh level synchronismwithin group drives.

Field-oriented closed-loopcontrol (vector control)in the form of frequency, speed or torque control formedium to highly dynamicdrives.Thefield-orientedcontrol method achieves adynamic performancewhich is comparable to aDC drive. This is madepossible by the preciselydetermined and corrected

torque-forming and flux-forming current compo-nents. Using this vectorcontrol method torquesetpoints can be held andlimited.

In the 1:10 speed range, the field-oriented controlsystem of SIMOVERTMASTERDRIVESVectorControl does not require aspeed encoder and islargely independent ofmotor parameters.

The following uses ofSIMOVERT MASTERDRIVESVector Control require aspeed encoder:

    High dynamic performancerequirements

Torque control in the con-trol range > 1:10

Low speeds Maximum speed accuracy. The different types of closed-loop control are described indetail in Section 6.

    Software functions

The basic software containsa wide range of standardfunctions.Thesefunctionsprovide maximum user-friendliness regarding opera-tor control and the highestdegree of flexibility (setpointselection, changeover be-tween datasets etc.).Theyalso ensure universal operat-ing conditions and a highlevel of operational safety(automatic restart, flyingrestart, DC injection braking, synchronization betweenconverters, wobble gener-ator, motorbrake control,etc.).

These functions aredescribed in Section 6.

    Free function blocks

Thanks to the free functionblocks contained in the basicsoftware, the drives can beadapted to the most variedof applications. Simplecontrol systems can thusbe created and technologyrequirements can be dealtwith in a decentralized man-ner.

The function blocks availablein SIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVESVectorControl canbe classified as follows:

Control blocks Signal conversion blocks Computing blocks Logic blocks Signalling blocks Timers.Fora detailed description, see Section 6.

  • Options:communication andinterface boards

The PROFIBUS-DP and CANserial fieldbus systems canbe linked up by means of thecommunication boards, CBP(Communication BoardPROFIBUS-DP) or CBC(Communication Board CAN).

In addition to this, thecommunication board SLB(SIMOLINK Board) is avail-able for SIMOLINK and theSCB2 interface board (SerialCommunication Board) isavailable for the USS proto-col and peer-to-peer.

All communication andinterface boards can beintegrated as options intothe electronics box. How theoption boards may be in-stalled and combined in theelectronics box is describedin Section 6 Integrating theoptions in the electronicsbox.

    USS-protocol

The USS protocol is aSiemens-specific transmis-sion protocol for drive tech-nology and is implementedas a standard protocol on allinterfaces of the basic units. The USS protocol enablesbus operation of up to amaximum of 32 nodes onthe basis of the RS485 trans-mission system. Data isexchanged in accordancewith the master-slave accessprocedure.TheUSSprotocolonly allows mono-master op-eration.This means onemas-ter and 31 slaves. Masterscan be higher-level systemssuch as the SIMATIC S5, S7and PCs or non-Siemensautomation systems.SIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVES are always slaves.

From an application point ofview, the USS protocol isused for the following two ap-plications:

Data transmission betweena PC and one or severalMASTERDRIVES for start-up and parameterizationof the units using theDrive ES and SIMOVISsoftware tools.TheOP1Suser-friendly operator con-trol panel also communi-cates to the SIMOVERTMASTERDRIVES using ofthe USS protocol. COM1(X300) on the PMU isused for linking up to thePC or the OP1S.

Communication via theUSS protocol to higher-level automation systemssuch as the SIMATIC S5,SIMATIC S7 or to non-Siemens systems. For thislink, COM2 on terminalstrip X101 of the CUVCcontrol board is usuallyused.

Parallel operation of COM1and COM2 is possible with-out any restrictions.

    SIMOLINK

SIMOLINK (Siemens MotionLink) is a company-specificdevelopment for Siemensdrive technology.

SIMOLINK is mainly used forextremely fast and strictlycyclical exchange of processdata (control information, setpoints, actual values andadditional information)between individual MASTER-DRIVES units or betweenMASTERDRIVES units and ahigher-level openloop/closed-loop control system with syn-chronization of all connectednodes to a shared systemclock pulse.

SIMOLINK is a digital, serialdata transmission protocolwith fiber-optic cables as thetransmission medium (plas-tic and glass).

    Peer-to-peer protocol

The peer-to-peer protocol isalso a company-specificaddition to Siemens drivetechnology.

The difference betweenpeer-to-peer and SIMOLINKis that peer-to-peer does notallow synchronization of thedrives.Thetransmissionspeed is also considerablyslower than with SIMOLINK.

A peer-to-peer connectionmeans a connectionbetween equal partners. In contrast to the classic mas-ter-slave bus systems (e.g.PROFIBUS), one and thesame converter can be boththe master (setpoint source)and the slave (setpoint sink).

Peer-to-peer connection isvia the RS485 interface. Aspecial high-speed protocolis used requiring little man-agement.Thetransmissionrate is up to 187.5 kbit/s.

Each drive can receivesetpoints and actual valuesfrom the preceding drive viaits peer receive terminal andtransmit data to the sub-sequent drive via its transmitterminal.

    Transmission protocolsand fieldbus systems

    PROFIBUS-DP

For Siemens drive technol-ogy, PROFIBUS-DP is thestandard bus system for allfield applications.

The PROFIBUS-DP is speci-fied in the European stand-ard,EN 50 170,Volume 2,and enables cyclical dataexchange between theMASTERDRIVES units andhigher-level systems such asthe SIMATIC S5/S7,SIMADYNr D.

In addition to process controldata, PROFIBUS-DP alsocarries information for para-meterization and diagnosisof the drives.

The extended functionalityof Motion Control withPROFIBUS-DP (e.g. directcommunication betweendrives) is supported by thenew CBP2 board.

    CAN according to CiA

The CAN protocol (ControllerArea Network) is specified inthe international proposalISO DIS 11898 where, how-ever, only the electrical partsof the physical layer and thedata link layer (Layers 1 and 2in the ISO/OSI layers refer-ence model) are specified. In their recommendationDS 102-1, the CiA (CAN inAutomation, an internationalassociation of users andmanufacturers) defined thebus interface and the busmedium for use as an indus-trial fieldbus.

The specifications in ISO-DIS11898 and in DS 102-1 arecomplied with by the CBCcommunication board.

The CBC communicationboard only supports CANLayers 1 and 2. Higher-leveladditional communicationspecifications of the differ-ent user organizations suchas CAN open of the CiA arenot supported (CAN open onrequest).

    OP1S user-friendlyoperator control panel

The OP1S operator controlpanel is an optional input/output device which can beused for parameterizing theunits. Parameterization ismenu-guided and isperformed by selecting theparameter number and thenentering the parametervalue. Plain-text displaysgreatly facilitate parameteri-zation.

Parameterand parametervalue descriptions, as well astext displays in English, Ger-man, Spanish, French andItalian, are included in thestandard version.

The OP1S has a non-volatilememory and is capable ofpermanently storing com-plete parameter sets. It cantherefore be used for archiv-ing parameter settings andfor transferring parametersets from one unit to another. Its storage capacity is suffi-cient to store 5 CUVC boarddata sets. It is not possible tostore data sets of the tech-nologyboards (e.g.T100,T300).

On the rear of the OP1S isa 9-pin SUB D connectorwhich power is supplied andcommunication with theconnected units takes place.

The OP1S operator controlpanel may be plugged di-rectly onto the SUB D socketof the PMU operator controland parameterizing unit andscrewed into the front panel.

The OP1S operator panel canalso be used as a remote-controldevice.Thecablebetween the PMU and theOP1S must not exceed200 m. If longer than 5 m, astandard 5 V powersupplywith a current capability ofat least 400 mA must beincluded on the OP1S endas shown in Fig. 2/9.

  • SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVEScan easily be linked up to anyautomation system, such asa PLC oran industrial PC (Fig.2/10).Theautomationsystemcontrols the drives accordingto the requirements of theprocess.Todo this, controldata and setpoints are cycli-cally transmitted to the drives. The latter transmit statusdata and actual values back tothe automation system.Evenprocess-related parameteradaption of the drives is pos-sible (e.g. in the case of achange in recipe).

The fieldbus system isresponsible for transportingthe information. This isprefer-ably the PROFIBUS-DP, anopen fieldbus standardwhich is standardized inEN 50 170 and supported bymany automation systems.

An alternative, which is espe-cially cost effective and easyto install in any automationsystem, is the USS protocol.

Finally, links to other fieldbussystems (e.g. CAN) round offthe communication possibili-ties of SIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVES.

In order to ensure that thedrive can perform its pro-cess-specific task, its pa-rameters must be individu-ally adapted in the start-upphase.TheSIMOVISandDrive ES basic (as stand-alone version) engineeringtools are available for this pur-pose.Running underWin-dows 95/98 orWindows NT,

it guides the commissioningengineer in a structuredmanner through the unit pa-rameters and during opera-tion they are service anddiagnostic tools. While onlythe bus-capable USS proto-col is used for communica-tion with the SIMOVIS units,Drive ES Basic also worksdirectly via PROFIBUS.

If the automation systeminvolved is a SIMATIC PLC,the link-up to SIMOVERTMASTERDRIVES is particu-larly simple.

With the DVA_S5 (forSIMATIC S5 and STEP 5 V 6.0) orDVA_S7 (forSIMATIC S7 and STEP 7< V 5.0) optional software, implementation of communi-cation between the PLC andthe drive can be reduced tosimple parameterization.

When this optional softwareis used, there is no need toincorporate detailed knowl-edge of the communicationmechanisms in the controlprogram; programming timeand costs are thus reduced. Both PROFIBUS-DP and theUSS protocol can be used asthe fieldbus system.

When the DVA_S7 softwareDVA_S7 is used viaPROFIBUS, the acyclic com-munication channels of com-munication board CBP canalso be used forSIMOVERTMASTERDRIVES (see page6/43).

  • The engineering and processcontrol of SIMOVERTMASTERDRIVES in combina-tion with a SIMATIC S7 andSTEPr 7 V5.0 is particularlyuser-friendly and convenient.

If the optional SoftwareDrive ES (Drive EngineeringSystem) is installed on thesame software platform (PCor PG) then the engineeringof the complete system cantake place via the STEP 7Manager. Data transporta-tion is handled by the S7system bus PROFIBUS-DP(see Fig. 2/11).

The optional softwareDrive ES combines thepreviously individual stepsof configuring (hardware con-figuring, parameter assign-ment, technology functions)and the control functionsbetween SIMATIC S7 andSIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVES, in one software tool.

Fully integrated in the STEP 7Manager, Drive ES consistsof three components withdifferent functions.

Drive ES Basic is used forconvenient startup and forservicing and diagnosticsduring operation of the plant. The great advantage com-pared to SIMOVIS is in thesystem-wide data manage-ment of drive and automat-ion data of a project in theSTEP 7 Manager.

The functions provided inMASTERDRIVES (basic unit, free block and technologyfunctions) can be graphicallyconfigured using Drive ESGraphic together with theSIMATIC tool CFC (continu-ous function chart).

Drive ES SIMATIC makesavailable the functionality ofthe software DVA_S7 forSTEP 7 V5.0.Thecommuni-cation between SIMATIC S7and Siemens drives (e.g.MASTERDRIVES) can thenbe configured using pre-

configured CPU functionblocks and simple parameterassignment.Furthermore, incorporation in PCS 7 is alsopossible.

In joint operation with thePROFIBUS communicationboard CBP2, Drive ES sup-ports additional functionali-ties such as slave-to-slavecommunication betweendrives and flexible configura-tion of the cyclic messages(see page 6/43).

  • Converters

    The converters can be usedconnected to a three-phasesupply of 200 V to690 V ACand with a frequency of50/60 Hz.

    Unit design:

    Line and DC-voltage termi-nation panel

    Rectifier bridge withground-fault protectedprecharging

    Electronics box with con-trol board

    PMU operator control andparameterizing unit

DC voltage link with anIGBT technology inverterover the whole voltage andpower output range

Motor termination panel. The converters can be moun-ted in a cabinet oron a wall. When wall mounting is beingplanned, the necessarydegree of protection mustbe considered.

In order to electrically isolatethe drive from the supply, amain circuit-breakerand/orload disconnector can beconnected on the line side.Operational switching of theunit is possible via a maincontactor which can beoperated via the unitselectronics. A preconditionfor this is an external 24 V DCpower supply for the unitselectronics (see page 6/32Control terminal strip X9).

A line commutating reactoreffectively disconnects thedrive from supply and alsolimits system peturbations inaccordance with VDE 0160(see page 6/34 Technicalcharacteristics of line-sidecomponents).

    Inverters

The inverters can be usedconnected to a DC voltagesystem in the voltage rangefrom 270 V to 930 V DC.

    Unit design:

    DC voltage terminationpanel

    Electronics box withcontrol board

    Operator control andparameterizing unit PMU

DC voltage link with anIGBTtechnology inverterover the whole voltage andoutput range

Motor termination panel. The inverter can be mountedin a cabinet.

In order to electrically isolatethe inverter from the DC bus,a load disconnector can beused. Operational switchingof the unit connected to theDC bus is possible via anelectric coupling unit whichcan be operated via the unitselectronics.

The electric coupling unitconsists of a load disconnec-tor,a contactorand a precharg-ing device (see page 6/35 DClink components).

These components must beordered separately and thenmounted and wired.

The inverters can be connec-ted to a rectifier or rectifier/regenerative unit to form adrive unit.

  • These frequency convertersbring together the wholeexperience gained with air-cooled MASTERDRIVESwith a water-cooling systemmaking it possible to achievehigh degrees of protection ofup to IP 65 when built intocabinets.

The heat loss of the fre-quency converters can beremoved from the controlcabinet, the control panel orthe factory without anyexchange of air.

Given that cooling-water isavailable in many cases forproduction purposes, theuse of water-cooling powermodules in drive engineeringis a highly appropriatemethod of cooling.

The modularity and provenfunctionality with regard tocontrol, communication, technology, operation andvisualization of theSIMOVERT MASTER-DRIVES is fully retained withthis type of converter.

The water-cooled converterswhich come accompaniedby a CUVC control modulecan be used to perform themost varied of tasks, such asthose involving:

    injection mouldingmachines

wire drawing machines glass drawing machines main propeller drives for

    ships cement mills

    and in the recycling industry

    and the textile industry.

Compact units2.2 kW to 37 kW

These units have the samedesign as the air-cooledMASTERDRIVES. In the heatsink area an air/watercooleris installed through whichwater from an external sup-ply flows. The fan used in theair-cooled units is retained inorder to ensure internal cool-ing of the boards, electronicsbox, capacitors and busbars. The degree of protection forthe unit is IP 20.The perform-ance data of the comparableair-cooled MASTERDRIVEShave beenretained. The unithas a supplementary coolingcapacity under certain condi-tions (see technical data). i.e.the cooling circuit, in conjunc-tion with the converter fan, isdimensioned so that it canremove more heat from thesurrounding environmentthan the converter can pro-duce.

The cooling water lines maybe connected from eitherabove orbelow. The addi-tional clearance requiredbetween the water-cooledcompact unit and an adja-cent unit is approx. 65 mm.

Chassis units37 kW to 200 kW

The water-cooled chassisunits have the same designas the compact units.

The degree of protection forthe unit is IP 00 (IP 20 avail-able as an option).

The cooling water lines canoptionally be connected atthe top or bottom.

Chassis units250 kW to 400 kW

The water-cooled chassisunits in the output rangefrom 250 kW to 400 kW havethe same design as the com-pact units.

The degree of protection forthe unit is IP 00. Higherdegrees of protection canbe achieved by installing theunits in system cabinets.

The cooling water lines canonly be connected at the bot-tom.

Inverters in the output rangefrom 2.2 kW to 2300 kW andconverters in the outputrange from 400 kW to 2300kW are available on request.
