    S P E A K E R P L A C E M E N TProper placement of thespeakers is an important stepin obtaining the most realisticsoundstage possible. Theserecommendations are for theoptimum placement of the

loudspeakers. Use theseplacement recommendationsas a guide. Slight variationswill not diminish yourlistening pleasure.

    MODEL: S26II

The S38II can be orientedeither horizontally orvertically; however, bestperformance will result fromhorizontal placement. Thelogo may be oriented as

needed by gently pulling itout slightly, rotating it, andreleasing it so that it snapsinto place. Although theseloudspeakers are designedas a mirrored pair, the

decision as to which one isleft or right will depend onthe amount of space leftbetween them.

    Less than 6 8 feet

    More than 6 8 feet

0-2 ft.This placement provides awide spread in sound, supplemented by the centerchannel speaker.

A wider stereo image ispresented with thetweeter/midrange arrayoutboard, and a tighter imageis presented with the arrayinboard.

    CONNECTION TIPS

    MODELS: S310II, S312II

Speakers and electronicsterminals have corre-sponding (+) and ()terminals. It is important to connect both speakersidentically: (+) on thespeaker to (+) on theamplifier and () on thespeaker to () on theamplifier. Wiring out ofphase results in thinsound, weak bass and apoor stereo image. Withthe advent of multichannel

surround-sound systems, connecting all of thespeakers in your systemwith the correct polarityremains equally importantin order to preserve theproper ambience anddirectionality of theprogram material. To use the binding-postspeaker terminals, unscrew the collar until

the pass-through hole inthe center post is visibleunder the collar. Insert thebare end of the wirethrough this hole; thenscrew the collar downuntil the connection istight. The hole in thecenter of each collar isintended for use withbanana-type connectors.

These models feature fourrubber feet that enablethem to be placed on asmooth-surfaced floor, such as tile or hardwood.Four metal spikes aresupplied for use when thespeaker is to be placed ona carpeted surface todecouple the speaker fromthe floor and preventunwanted damping. Toinsert the spikes, gently laythe speaker on its side (notits front or back) on a soft, nonabrasive surface. Eachspike screws into thethreaded insert in thecenter of each rubber foot.Make sure all four spikes

are screwed in completelyfor stability.NEVER drag the speaker to move it, as this willdamage the spikes, thefeet and/or the woodcabinet itself. Always liftthe speaker and carry it toits new location.CAUTION: Floorstanding(tower) loudspeakers have a high center of gravityand may become unstableand tip over duringearthquakes or if rocked, tipped or improperlypositioned. If this is aconcern, these speakersshould be anchored to the

wall behind them, using the same procedures andhardware customary foranchoring bookcases andwall units. Customer isresponsible for properinstallation and properselection of hardware.

The supplied self-adhesivefelt pads may be attachedto the bottom corners ofyour speakers to protectyour furniture.

If there is no sound from any of the speakers:

Check that receiver/amplifier is on and that asource is playing. Review proper operationof your receiver/amplifier.

If there is no soundcoming from one speaker:

Check the Balancecontrol on yourreceiver/amplifier. Check all wires andconnections betweenreceiver/amplifier and speakers. Make sure no wires aretouching other wires orterminals and creating ashort circuit. Make sure all wires are connected. Make surenone of the speaker wiresare frayed, cut orpunctured. In Dolby* Digital or DTSmode, make sure that thereceiver/processor isconfigured so that thespeaker in question isenabled. Turn off all electronicsand switch the speaker inquestion with one of theother speakers that isworking correctly. Turneverything back on, anddetermine whether theproblem is in the sameplace, i.e., the speaker thatwas working previouslynow has no sound and thespeaker that was notworking now sounds fine;or whether it has moved,

i.e., the speaker that wasnot working still has nosound and the speaker thatwas working is still fine. Ifthe problem is in the sameplace, the source of theproblem is most likely withyour receiver or amplifier, and you should consult theowners manual for thatproduct for furtherinformation. If the problemhas followed the speaker, consult your dealer forfurther assistance or, if that is not possible, visit our Web site atwww.jbl.com for furtherinformation.

If the system plays at lowvolumes but shuts off asvolume is increased:

Check all wires andconnections betweenreceiver/amplifier and speakers. Make sure all wires areconnected. Make surenone of the speaker wires are frayed, cut orpunctured. If more than one pair ofmain speakers is beingused, check the minimumimpedance requirementsof your receiver/amplifier.

If there is no (or low) bassoutput:

Make sure the polarities (+ and ) of the left andright Speaker Inputs are connected properly. Consider adding apowered subwoofer to

your system for use withdigital .1 surroundformats.

If there is no sound from the surround speakers: Check all wires and connections betweenreceiver/amplifier andspeakers. Make sure allwires are connected.Make sure none of the speaker wires are frayed, cut or punctured. Review proper operationof your receiver/amplifierand its surround soundfeatures. Make sure the movie orTV show you are watchingis recorded in a surroundsound mode. If it is not, check to see if yourreceiver/amplifier hasother surround modes youmay use. In Dolby Digital or DTSmode, make sure yourreceiver/processor isconfigured so that thesurround speakers areenabled. Review the operation ofyour DVD player and thejacket of your DVD to makesure that the DVD featuresthe desired Dolby Digital orDTS mode, and that youhave properly selectedthat mode using both theDVD players menu and theDVD discs menu.
