NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
Everything is ducky here at the Hagerman Fossil Beds. The
state coordinator for the Idaho Junior Duck Stamp competi-
tion is park paleontologist Kari Prassack. Kari is working on
promoting the Junior Duck Stamp contest and organizing
events related to it. We hope to do some learning activities
and perhaps have an art lesson all related to ducks on a
Saturday in February or early March. The deadline for chil-
dren to submit art for the contest is March 15, 2017. Judges will meet in
Hagerman to evaluate the entries and pick winners, the top winner will go on
to the National Junior Duck Stamp competition. In the Hagerman Fossil Beds
visitor center theater we'll display entries during the month of April so every-
one can admire the talent of our young folks.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR BLM authorizes routes for final segments of the
Gateway West Transmission Line Project The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has authorized routes for the final two seg-ments of the Gateway West Transmission Line Project (Segments 8 and 9), which con-nects the Hemingway substation in southwest Idaho with power generation facilities in central Wyoming. The BLM signed a Record of Decision (ROD) for Segments 8 and 9 and granted rights-of-way (ROW) to Rocky Mountain Power and Idaho Power to build and operate 321 miles of 500-kV transmission lines on BLM-managed public lands in Idaho’s Gooding, Elmore, Owyhee, Cassia, and Twin Falls counties. For more information, visit the BLM's Gateway West Transmission Line Project website. Online: http://bit.ly/2sExPBP Email: [email protected] Phone: 1-800-380-5828
About the project
The Gateway West Project is a national-level priority and an important component of
President Obama’s initiative to transform the nation’s power grid and spur develop-
ment of renewable energy. Idaho Power and Rocky Mountain Power jointly proposed
the line as 10 segments originating at the Windstar substation near Glenrock, Wyo-
ming and terminating at the Hemingway substation, 20 miles southwest of Boise,
Idaho, to deliver up to 1,500 megawatts of transmission capacity in southern Wyo-
ming and southern Idaho – enough to power 975,000 homes.

Cold weather has hampered the cleanup of the Bliss sewage spill, which
occurred last month. David Jentzsch, who lives closest to the cascading sew-
age, said an attempt was made awhile back to vacuum some of the spill on a
day when warmer weather melted some of the mess, but the effort wasn't
very successful.
Meanwhile, Mother Nature has modfied the fecal waterfalls by melting
some ice and covering the rest with snow. At the present time, only one of the
falls can be seen from the roadway, and the yellow-green color has faded
enough to look like ordinary ice.
When asked about details of a cleanup, Jentzsch said he had yet to meet
with Bliss city officials or IDEQ about exactly how and when a cleanup would
be started. He said he thought weather would be a determining factor. He
also stated he didn't know who would oversee the cleanup efforts. Inquiries to
Bliss city about the spill or cleanup plans are routinely referred to the city at-
torney.
Mr. Jentzsch said his spring water and house water have both been tested
and, because they treat their water with a UV light system, he feels they are in
no danger at the present time. ~ Connie Flinders

BIKE PATH INFO
HAGERMAN BIKE & WALK PATH UPDATES
By Craig Laughlin
The Hagerman Bike & Walk Path Committee
has many items in the works so far for 2017:
We continue to work with the Idaho
Transportation Department (ITD) on the first
phase of the bike and walk path. This sec-
tion will go from the Hagerman City Park to
Billingsley Creek. Plans are to start on this
portion of the path this spring. The Commit-
tee is seeking community donations to bring
this phase to realization this year!
The Committee is working with the
National Park Service and other local organi-
zations to plan a charrette the weekend of
April 21 – 23. This setting will provide a fo-
rum for ideas and bring together community
members, planners, designers and other
collaborates to work on the vision for the
development of the bike and walk path.
More information to come…
A grant team has been formed within
the Bike and Walk Path Board of Trustees.
This team is charged with seeking founda-
tion, federal and private funds for the devel-
opment of the bike and walk path.
There will be a community fund raiser
to be held this spring…stay tuned!

Ralph Cisco, a former president of the Hagerman Valley Historical Society, passed away in January, 2017. We will always appreciate his very positive influence and effort.
The Society has acquired the property just north of the City Park for an annex or addition to our Museum. Plans are now in progress for the fund raising and building. Ideas for fund raising are being worked on. Thanks to the community for all their enthusiasm and support.

It was my great honor in August to become the presi-
dent of Hagerman I.D.E.A. Inc. The non profit corpora-
tion is the only community-based philanthropic group
in the Hagerman Valley and the board of directors
was planning to close it down. Stepping up to the
plate, I, along with a revitalized board of both existing
and new directors, added the dba name (doing busi-
ness as) Hagerman Valley Foundation as more de-
scriptive and encompassing of our service.
We are a dedicated and visionary board with many
goals, plans and dreams for our Hagerman Valley. Our
directors’ biographies and projects are listed on the
website: www.HagermanValleyFoundation.org.
Please check them out and visit our Facebook page.
Become a member! Your membership and support
really means a lot and will give us more energy for the
important work we do on behalf of our community,
the beautiful Hagerman Valley. Membership is $25
for individuals.
Help! We need Volunteers… 2017 will see continued
work on a number of projects including the Down-
town sidewalk improvements, and this newsletter.
We are seeking enthusiastic people wanting to ex-
pand the livability of Hagerman. Your time and skills
are wanted and needed. Help us spread the word by
joining yourself and encouraging others to become
members and volunteers.
Fiscal Sponsorship - Yes, we can! Do you need a tax
deduction for funders of your organization and its
projects? We offer our fee-based sponsorship of legal
and tax-exempt status to groups engaged in activities
in line with our mission. This includes providing fiduci-
ary oversight, financial management, and other ad-
ministrative services. Contact us - we can help.
Thank You for your participation in our vision for
Hagerman Valley. I am excited to see what we will
achieve together.
