Yes seniors can live at home, with the best trained caregivers

in North America.“They’re recipes I’ve done over time. Some are from cookbooks or from the Personal Chef Net-work. I find many good recipes in “Eating Well” and “Fine Cooking” magazines,” says Ms. MacKenzie. She also has used recipes from Patricia Wells’ cookbook, “Bistro Cooking.”

March cooking classes Ms. MacKenzie’s kitchen will be the setting for four Saturday morning cooking classes in March. “Brushing up on basics” will be given March 7. Family-friendly entrees will be featured in the March 14 class, and soups and stews on March 21, and “It’s Springtime!” on March 28. Some of the MacKenzie boys’ favorites to be featured in the “family friendly” class are: beef stew, creamy chicken enchila-

das, beef and bean chili, and tomato bisque (recipe from Cafe Beaujolais in Mendocino) with grilled cheese sandwiches. The fee for individual classes is $60 per person. Classes are held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

An early love of good food Enjoying fine food has been a part of Ms. MacKenzie’s life from the time she was an 18-year-old exchange student in France. “I was exposed to food I hadn’t had before. Being part of my host family’s table showed me the part dining plays in our lives. ... I learned that food is the essence of what brings us together.” After graduating from the University of the Pacific and a career in the travel industry, Ms. MacKenzie got serious about a career in food; that was about the time she and her husband, Bill, were married. She enrolled in the professional culinary pro-

gram at Tante Marie Cooking School in San Francisco. After completing the course, she worked as an event super-visor at Fogarty Winery in Woodside, and in the Epicure Department at Neiman Mar-cus in the Stanford Shopping Center, furthering her “foodie” qualifications. “I stopped working when the boys (sons Ian and Alec) were born, but I was always cooking and entertaining,” she recalls. With her sons now high school students at Woodside, she decid-ed it was time to get back to food. Nutmeg Kitchens was established in January 2007. Having a personal chef pre-pare meals is a luxury most of us can’t afford, but as home cooks, we can always learn new “tricks of the trade” to make cooking and dining more enjoyable for ourselves and our families. Two pros in the restaurant business, Mark Adams and Gary Maffia, have teamed

up to open Marq’s in Menlo Bar & Grille at 1143 Crane St. The space, formerly occupied by Siam restaurant, is billed as “a bar, a grille, and a piano.” The restaurant opened on Feb. 24. Its sophisticated decor fea-tures dark paneling with warm pink hanging lights over the bar. Pink tablecloths adorn tables in the grille, located in the front of the restaurant. Marq’s will have nightly piano

entertainment — jazz, blues and R&B — in the large bar area. The bar menu, created by executive chef Gary Maffia, will be served until 11 p.m. Some of Chef Maf-fia’s creations are lobster spring rolls, Kobe sliders, Russian scal-lops and foie gras, and lamb lol-lipops with two sauces. The grille room is by reservation only. Along with small plates and appetizers, entrees will include Muscovy duck breast, filet mignon, braised short rib, fish grilled or baked en papillote, and other selec-tions. Mr. Adams says the menu is California/international cuisine. Mark Adams was formerly bartender at Oak City Bar &

Grill in downtown Menlo Park. Mr. Maffia, with more than 30 years of restaurant experience, is remembered as the owner of the popular Barbarossa restaurant, 3301 El Camino Real in Red-wood City, where Chantilly is now located. He was also the pro-prietor of Olivio’s in Belmont. Here’s a unique feature: Should you have too many cocktails, Marq’s will provide complimen-tary limousine service to see you safely home. Marq’s is open Tuesday through Saturday. Hours are 6 to 10 p.m. week nights; 7 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For reservations, call 853-1143. A

La Honda Winery owner and winemaker Ken Wornick took two top honors at the recent 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, and wine lovers can taste one of the winning cabernet sauvignons — along with several other La Honda wines — at GC’s Tasting Cafe in Menlo Park on Thursday, March 5. La Honda Winery, located in the Fair Oaks area of Redwood City, took “Best of Class” in the cabernet sauvignon $25 to $34.99 category for its 2006 Chalone Naylor’s Dry Hole; and a “Double Gold” medal in the same category for its 2006 Santa Cruz Mountains Lonehawk. The competition had more than 4,000 entries from around the world. In addition to making La Honda’s wine, Mr. Wornick is proprietor of Post & Trellis, a company that manages small vineyards from Woodside and Atherton to Saratoga. A number of his La Honda wines are made with grapes from those vineyards, including the award-winning Lonehawk, made from grapes grown above the town of Saratoga. Mr. Wornick said he will be pouring the Lonehawk cab at GC’s this week, and those sampling the wine will be part of an exclusive group: “No one has tasted that wine outside of the winery staff and the (San Francisco) Chronicle judges” at the recent competition, he said. He will be pouring several other wines that night, including a 2002 Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon reserve. He said he released half of that wine’s production in 2004, and held the other half for release earlier this year. “So it’s a true reserve now,” he noted. The winetasting event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at GC’s Tasting Cafe & Specialty Market, 657 Oak Grove Ave. in downtown Menlo Park. The charge is $5. For more information, call the cafe at 322-9463. La Honda Winery is at 2645 Fair Oaks Ave. in Redwood City. The tasting room is

open to the public on the third Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment for groups. For information about the winery, call 366-4104 or visit lahondawinery.com.

Debut of original musical Unfolding in Portola Valley in March — Women’s History Month — is a story about two midwives who disobey the Pharaoh’s order to kill newborn male Jewish babies. Cheryl Goodman-Morris’ original musical drama, “Puah’s Midwife Crisis,” debuts in a Por-tola Valley Theatre Conservatory production at the Valley Pres-byterian Church at 945 Portola Road in Portola Valley. Ms. Goodman-Morris, a resi-dent of Portola Valley, is the minister of worship, education and arts at the church. The scene of her play: Egypt just before the birth of Moses, and the Jewish

population is exploding. The Pharaoh, worried about Egyptians being crowded out, orders the mid-wives to their gruesome task. Their refusal has consequences. The musical opens for two pre-view shows on March 18 and 19, followed by shows on March 20-22 and 27-29. The March 20 show includes an opening night gala. All performances start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, from $10 to $20 ($75 fro the gala) may be sold at the door. To buy tickets in advance, call 630-7788. For more information, go to www.puahthemusical.org.

Author of ‘Aging Artfully’ at Menlo Park Library Berkeley author Amy Gorman will discuss her book, “Aging Artfully: 12 Profiles of Visual and Performing Women Artists 85-105,” on Saturday, March 7, at the Menlo Park Library. The free program begins at 11 a.m. “Aging Artfully” is the synthe-sis of Ms. Gorman’s experience working in aging and the arts, according to outreach librarian Roberta Roth. That experience includes work as a speech thera-pist at veterans’ hospitals and as a medical social worker with older adults. The author will also discuss the book’s accompanying CD, “7 Songs of Women’s Lives,” by Frances Kandl, a musical tribute to the women featured in Ms. Gorman’s book. She will also show the DVD, “Still Kicking,” a half-hour film that profiles six women spotlighted in the book. Free van service for Menlo Park seniors and people with disabilities is available. For more information, or to schedule transportation, call 330-2512, or e-mail [email protected]. The Menlo Park Library is at 800 Alma St.

The concert is a benefit for the Children’s Ministry fund. Donations of $25 or any amount will be accepted. Reservations are not required and doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Ms. Bostick and trio leader Jeff Barnhart will play two pianos with Anne Barnhart on flute and Danny Coots on drums. Ms. Bostick is the grandniece of ragtime composer Charles N. Daniels, who helped Scott Joplin, the “King of Ragtime,” promote his first rag in 1899. The Ivory and Gold Trio will be featured at the Monterey Dixie-land Festival March 6 through 8. They play on the traditional jazz circuit throughout the United States, as well as in England. For more information on the March 11 concert, call Carol Maslin at 323-8544.

Let’s Ask Ann . . .Dear Ann, My interest is peaking...

We are finding it difficult to obtain a home loan at a resonable interest rate in this market. Any suggestions? Thanks, Bill & Debbie

Dear Bill & Debbie, First, be patient. Make sure you have tax returns

and an earning history to support the loan amount you want. Also, pay off all credit cards and car loans and order a credit report. A high credit rating will lower your interest rate. However, you may have to settle for a higher than normal interst rate to purchase your home, but you can always refinance your loan when rates go down.

All the best,Ann Griffiths
