Readers choose books to read by

finding just right books (not too hard, not too easy).

1.Browse through the books in the basket.

2. Read a small part (few pages).

3. Find a book that has only a few tricky words that you can read smooth and understand what you are reading.

Readers learn how to pick a

just right book by the five finger

test.Read a page in the middle of the book. Put up one finger for every “clunk” you have. 0 fingers – too easy 1-3 fingers – just right 4-5 fingers - quite hard 5+ too hard for now

Too Small Too Big Perfect Fit!

EASY•you can read the words fluently (smooth and with an interesting voice)

*there often are not a lot of words on a page

*you know how to say all the words

*there are not a lot of pages in the book

*you have a lot of schema for the subject

*sometimes the book has a larger font*you totally understand the story*your reading rate may be quicker*your thinking comes easy as you read the words

CHALLENGING*many of the words are too hard to decode (failed a five finger test)

*you don't know what the tricky words MEAN

*your reading becomes choppy more than it is fluent

*you don't have any prior knowledge the subject

*there are often a lot of words on the page

*often the font is small

*you lose focus as you are reading

*you are not enjoying the book because you have to do too much word work*your thinking is confused

Readers help themselves stay focused

by making plans for themselves.

1.Think about what you have already accomplished in the book you have been reading.

2.Think about what you want to accomplish today. What do you want your reading and thinking plan to be.

3. Say the plan aloud to yourself.

by rereading to make it smooth.

1.Read the book through one time.

2. Reread the book a second time to make it sound smooth.

missed, and stopping to envision what’s going on
